I didn't care for Mario Maker that much, never bothered to try nsmb, didn't really like world at all so I barely played it
1 and 3 are the only ones I played a decent amount but I never got that far and didn't care for them much either

It is New SMB with a new coat of paint. Play those if you like this. Barely anything has changed from them.

Why were the character models on U so fricking ugly? It's like they didn't improve them at all from Wii.
Because they didn't. They just made the game HD and called it a day because they had next to no budget to work with. All the budget went into the 3D Mario games because the 2D games would sell regardless of how they looked, they just needed good levels and gameplay.

They're bulky and cumbersome
They just changed Mario's model and gave it animations. Everything from the art style of the environments to the composition of the screen is remarkably similar.
If this was an early access game NSMB could pass as an earlier update

for example that kick animation is garbage. compare it to the kick animation in the latest 3D mario games and it's just so stiff and incorrectly posed.

Wonder has a problem in that it's usually too easy. It doesn't have the problem NSMB does of feeling like a bland rehash.

The models, animations, and overall artstyle are completely different. Even the UI is different from every other game in the series.
i played mario land 1 and 2 on the gameboy, technically also mario land 3: wario land and wario land 3 if you want to count those but i remember never getting beyond the first couple levels in those.
next mario i played was new soup on DS, then new soup wii and then wonder.
never cared a lick about world and never considered myself a mario fan but im enjoying wonder.
though i would probably not care about whatever the next 2d mario is going to be unless itll be a couple years off.
