Is it worth building a high end rig to play the latest AAA games at the highest settings?

My good friend wants to sell me his 4090 for $1750 because he just got married and no longer cares about gaming. I myself play on a shitty little laptop and been thinking about building a proper desktop for a while.

Games I plan to play are:

Starfield
Alan wake 2
Cyberpunk

Is it worth it?

Tell him to suck a dick, you can find new 4090s for $1600.

Like this anon said just wait for 5000 at this point if you want to have THE BEST pc. As an added bonus Zen 5 will be out as well.

this, your friend is a c**t

And your budget needs to consider the rest of the desktop and a good monitor to fit your 4090.

2 seconds on Amazon and I saw a 4090 for $1800, if you're buying it second hand you need a better deal than that. You'd be doing him a favor for $1300

Blackwell and Battlemage will usher in a good era of GPUs. For now you can stopgap with a 6700XT/6800 for $300

Also your friend's a fricking homosexual for making you pay the same price he paid for it including tax (assuming a very generous 9.37% tax)

Make sure your tower can fit a new GPU. 15 inches is a lot of space.

your friend wants to sell you a used 4090 for 1750? it took me 2 seconds of googling to find a new 4090 for around the same price.

Do you really have to give up gaming when you get married?

Basically, or get cheated on. Chances are you'll get cheated on anyways. And if you give up gaming, your clan etc will be broken up by then and gotta start from scratch.

Seeing all these graphics cards has me worried for my 1080ti. She was worth a pretty penny back then, and she’s a humble, hardworking card still. IF I had to one day, sadly replace such a card, what would be the next best thing? Bite the bullet and go for the 40 series, or do the 30s still keep up?

4000 series cause of wifi 6 and up related stuff. Personally be leaning towards the 4070TI prior to the return ti normal prices probably super now unless used

If he was a good friend AND didn't care for gaming he wouldn't sell it for so much. Part of him must be reluctant, maybe he thinks he'll win if he supresses it.

just finished my new pc last weekend, 12600k and 4070 super. I am enjoying it but I wouldn't go higher than a 4070

Unless your playing at 4K, a 4070 or a 7900 XT are the fastest GPUs that a 12600k can handle.

No. Get a prebuilt for $3,000 that includes a CPU and motherboard that won't bottleneck it.

no, maybe if you can bring him down to 1400 or 1300. but paying launch msrp for an 18 month old card is ridiculous.

Don't get AMD CPU either no matter how good the benchmarks are at PC builder sites. You will always have weird problems like the Digital Foundry guy did with his Shark getting stuck in midair that Intel builds will have a lot less of.

a woman who genuinely likes vidya and won't force you to give it up if you marry her shouldn't be THAT hard to find

It’s hard to find a girl who genuinely likes vidya but it’s not hard to find a girl who doesn’t give a shit if you play as long as you give her the stink dick here and there and squeeze her ass every day

I'm using a 6700XT and I'm hard capping at 60s fps all current games maxed out, 1080 though, spending over 300$ for a graphic card is a meme unless you plan to do shit at 4k.

It's the most powerful GPU on the planet by a wide margin. If you want to play games at the max settings possible then that's the device to get. That simple. Probably won't be supplanted until next year.

depends on the game and if youre moronic enough to use ultra presets

pic related gets me solid 150fps in basically any recently released game. but i keep fps locked to 150 so in some games the GPU runs at 40% usage. in addition to that i always tweak ultra settings to my liking. turning off chromatic aberration, motion blur etc. and, if i don't notice a drop in fidelity, enable quality DLSS.
