Am I the only one who hasn't played SMT 4 yet because of how bad a 3ds emulator looks? Something about the map being on the bottom, surrounded by all that white space annoys me. How good of a game is it? I keep hearing mixed reviews. Should I finally get over having to look dumb on the emulator and play it? Also why would they go from having SMT 3 and Persona 4 on PS2, to making their next mainline game on a 3ds? Seems like a downgrade.

I abandoned both 4 and 5 because I find the designs too ugly, gameplay wise I don't remember it being that impressive, either. Dub was kinda funny and the OST was actually really neat.
Interesting. I did play 5 and thought it was okay.
Assuming this isn’t a shitpost:
Yeah the game is pretty good. The dialogue is sometimes more anime-y than I’d like but it’s still a pretty serious tone for the most part. The English voice acting is actually pretty decent too. One of the most interesting settings I’ve played in too.
Press Turn is a great system as usual, and I really liked the Demon Whisper system since it allows you to take demon skills and further customize Flynn’s moveset. There’s not really many dungeons due to a commitment to realistic environments, but it’s not terrible. It’s also the kind of game where you easily get your shit kicked in at the beginning, and begin to dominate as your get your bearings.
Music is probably my favorite overall. Just a lot of kickass battle themes. Seriously great. If the UI jank of trying to emulate a dual-screen system on a single screen is really that big a deal, I recommend just using a 3DS with cfw to play.
It's not a shitpost. Tried it once a while back and think I killed the Minotaur and stopped playing. Something about it just didn't click. Was debating giving it another chance.
Doesn't that still not make it "fullscreen"? Thought I tried it and there was still weird sizing issues, unlike going fullscreen in something like pcsx2.
Play SMT IV Apocalypse if IV didn't click. Very different feel, and to me it's the superior game.
How the hell is SMT "how about we put Persona 4 into SMT and make each parts equally lacking" IV: Apocalypse is a "superior" game?
It is literally better in every way except for some new characters being obnoxious. And if you're incapable of tuning them out, it even has a main-route ending where you can fricking kill all of them.
I played it on the phone and looked good. Naraku sucks dick but the rest of the game is ok, but moving around the map and doing secondary missions is cancer .
What's better exactly? Can you sell me on it or at least tell me something Apocalypse improved.
He just told you - literally every way. Stop looking to be spoonfed and go play it, which you obviously didn't.
Go choke on a bag of dick, brainlet. You can't even give a single good response about something you like.
>Your current main quest goal is now shown on your map. Additionally, places on the overworld are marked and signed, making it easier to navigate.
This is a fairly good improvement. Thanks.
NTA.
First of all, there's nothing like the "frick you for playing the game" zone at the start of the game in Apocalypse.
There's been many balancing changes that eliminated the bullshitty RNG ways the game could screw you over with, but that also made the game much easier than IV. The most glaring one is the changes made to the smirk mechanic. In IV, it would make whoever had it a living demigod for a single turn. Apocalypse only grants you a guaranteed crit and your weakness can't be hit. You can also lose you're smirk if you're hit with an ailment.
Many moves now have additional effects if the user is smirking. Mudo and Hama skills have been revamped to basic magic spells, but they can still insta kill (most of the time) if you smirk, for example. Because of that, you seem to get smirk much more often than in IV, even without the apps. There's also spells that can inflict and remove smirking.
Magic can now crit, too.
You can manually choose which partners to take with you and you can see what moves they can use. They level up and unlock additional skills. There's also an All-Out Attack 0.2 that gets introduced a bit later, which has your companions use some of their moves if needed, and attack enemy, forcing them to skip their turn. It's pretty exploitable.
Your current main quest goal is now shown on your map. Additionally, places on the overworld are marked and signed, making it easier to navigate.
you can move the bottom screen to the side if you want and change it's size too. also don't play in windowed mode moron. it's very good and the first hour or two are some of the best jrpg kino i've ever experienced. after that it gets a bit too easy.
I do side by side screens with the offscreen being like 1/4th size it fits into a 16:9 monitor acceptably with original aspect. You can just have a hotkey that switches which screen is big if you need to see a fine detail
Let me see a full screen screenshot, curious what it looks like.
You should've gotten a cheap 3DS and hacked it years ago. It's the comfiest handheld with a massive library.
3DS is uncomfy to hold, and the low resolution screen sucks ass
>Something about the map being on the bottom
totally, because there's a second screen and the game is designed with portability in mind.
can't take people who emulate DS and 3DS seriously, they're so fricking gay.
As much as I hate SMT IV, the idea of the game, and what it represents—i have to concede that it does play a lot better than IV. The game balance is a lot more normal compared to IV where getting ambushed can spell certain doom. That's not to say I didn't enjoy IV. I've played thru it multiple times. I enjoy the "kill or be killed" game balance (for the first 10 hours or so at least). And it's more interesting, in theory. But there are still a number of things that mechanically IV: A do objectively better than IV that I have to say that it offers a better gameplay experience. Similar to, say, comparing and contrasting Devil Survivor 1 and 2. The sequel is a better "game" but not exactly the better experience.
With all that said, it's a black pill to say that IV: A may in hindsight be some of the best megaten gaming to date. Even when things looked so dire, we didn't know how good we had it.
"As much as I hate SMT IV, ..."
* SMT IV: Apocalypse
Get a 3DS and buy it physical. I have it and apocalypse and I love it. Going to start another playthrough based on this in NG+.
>Get a 3DS and buy it physical.
good goys must consoom
Still better than Shit Journey.
Original Strange Journey is great, mogs the shit out of the borefest that is IV, frick you.
>muh JIMENEZ uwuwu
Frick Jimenez (no homosexual tho)
based, SJ is one of the worst games in the entire franchise and i'm sick of people saying otherwise
Angels have been dispatched at your location. Prepare to feel the love of God.
Strange Journey had absolutely awful alignment reps. A russian chick for law, a Hispanic for chaos and a Black person for neutral. Getting a game over immediately was the best ending.
How would you have fixed the racial misalignments?
Make all of them straight white cis males.
BORING
