Play both, they're both good in their own right.

KOTOR 1 is the best Star Wars RPG you could ask for, KOTOR 2 is the best philosophical RPG you can get
Play both, in order. You'll barely know what the frick is going on when you start KOTOR 2 anyway, it's better if you have a sense of what happened

    >2 considered by far the best one

2 is extremely unfinished and not even close to having writing and characters as good as the original which was done by Bioware in it's prime.

Play both. KOTOR 2 has tons of nods to the events/characters of KOTOR 1. Besides, KOTOR 1 is great. It's a more by-the-books Star Wars story, but there's nothing wrong with that. KOTOR 2 deviates a lot from the usual tropes, but it's honestly more interesting to dive into after experiencing what KOTOR 1 throws at you. Comparing the tone differences and how all the concepts of what a Jedi is between games is neat.

Also, if you like one of them, you'll very likely enjoy the other. Maybe the shift in atmosphere and type of writing between the two will make you prefer one over the other, but they both play the same and have the same great RPG mechanics/dialogue systems. No reason to skip to the sequel.

I prefer KOTOR II over the original a lot, but I still think you should play KOTOR I first. Maybe even multiple times. I recomend using the community patch. In a re-play, you may consider the mod Brotherhood of Shadow, it's style is more similar to the writting of KOTOR II. Also, use some restoration patch for KOTOR II...

Kotor 1 is a much, much better game so you should play that one and then consider how much your time is worth to you before beginning Kotor 2.

      >Kotor 2 is an unfinished mess for pseuds
KoTOR2 in a nutshell. Lesser minds mistake contradictory granny and long shallow lectures for good, deep writing. You can always tell a person's intellect by their choice in KoTORs.

Yes play it. Kotor 1 is a complete Star wars experience and arguably better than 2

Play 1 then play 2 with TSLRCM. 2 expands upon the mechanics of 1 a lot and makes them a lot better.

The one that matters the most though, Peragus is miles better than Taris.

      >amazing planets
      Peragus
      Dxun/Onderon

      >good planets
      Tatooine
      K1 Korriban
      Lehon
      Nar Shaddaa
      K2 Dantooine

      >okay planets
      Mannan
      K2 Korriban
      Malachor V
      Telos

      >bad planets
      Taris
      K1 Dantooine

      >garbage planets
      Kashyyyk

Telos was the worst planet by far. The space station part was fine, but the actual surface portion was absolute dog shit.
And while I enjoy Paragus it's not top tier.

I almost put Telos is bad along with Taris, but there's certain things I like about Telos like the polar cap because beating the Echani battle circle without cheating or cheesing it actually puts your build to the test. And that bumps it up into "okay" just barely along with some of the amusing things like taking that Twilek slave and getting to fight the Czerka droids before they leave Telos station. Taris doesn't have that same kind of soul.

only play kotor 2 with TSL Restored Content Mod. I heard that it's included with the steam version but cannot confirm.

It's not included, but it's easily installable off the workshop. Which is fine if you just want TSLRCM, but nowadays I also recommend the K2 Community Patch and Unofficial TSL Tweak Pack (to get rid of that god awful Dantooine Sublevel event, you all know the one). I'm not sure if you need to revert to the legacypc version of the game to use them though which is a lot of work to get running right.

I'll admit Peragus is very unique & interesting in piecing together what the frick happened to the station on your first play through, but it just sucks to replay it; even more then Taris imo. It doesn't help that immediately afterwards you get stuck on fricking Telos; it just makes me not wanna bother touching the game for a re-run. Kotor 2 starts off really strong narratively with tons of extra/hidden dialogue that build up the game world but it just drops off like a rock later on.

I think Peragus has become very fun for me on new playthroughs because your early build choices can actually really matter a lot with all the skill checks and lock you out of the bonuses because you don't have your party for most of the level. I find a lot of fun in optimizing and trying to reach certain skill checks or seeing what the game is like when you're painfully under skilled.

The more I play Peragus, I feel as though it's literally the only location that was 100% finished and the true peak of Kotor II.

Just because the sequels are disjointed directed by committee trash doesn’t make the prequels good. They’re still low-effort lazy shit made explicitly for the branding. You should have at least given them to someone else to write and direct you thin-skinned egocentric b***h

I read your story outline for a sequel trilogy that is online. Disney's is shit but yours doesn't sound dramatically better. Sounds slightly less shit, but still shit.

the actual game in kotor 2 are the dialogue options that you have to unlock. you have to spend a greater portion of the game on your ship to make sure that you gain max influence on your companions, which also unlocks some new content. dialogue in kotor 1 is very shallow in comparison, typical bioware formula of doing a job in good nature, or for money, or for money and killing the client.

KoTOR2 also has the most boring flow of events. I always get bored once I reach Nar Shadar or whatever its called. Obsidian also did not notice that the combat is the weakest thing about the game because it probably has 3 times the fighting than the original and it is poorly balanced in the beginning with the odds heavily against you.
