as far as i can tell, it's not so much that it's "dying" but just that it stopped expanding. kids are still getting into it but adults are growing out of it, so it has a consistent replacement rate
I got tired of their engagement based matchmaking.
I think they started to add bots in the game, the game is always decided by that one idiot, in either team, who keeps dying, and goes 0-10.

It's a 14 year old game. It isn't mainstream anymore, just like WoW and Minecraft aren't mainstream anymore. Fortnite and Genshin are the big things nowadays.

the season 4 was what killed my "sense of wonder" for the game, it started to become more streamlined and less dota-ish

Most people i imagine are mazed in like me. Tried dota, felt too similar and more frustrating, tried Hots, just got fed up of getting requed with blatant trolls over and over (literally the same trolls). I play because i am depressed and hopeless, not because i enjoy it. Especially looking at new games coming out.

If you need some random interaction in your games or feel you will install it again, just play hearthstone, even with all their chinkness & homosexualry is somewhat more tolerable than LoL

I haven't spend a single cent on hearthstone ever, you can start playing today and collect/unlock cards faster than before
and if you don't care about playing meta, weekly tavern brawl can provide all the fun you need from time to time, that's what I do
i get your sentiment but I quit playing when they starting censoring art for the chink-bugs, after getting fed up with LoL I came back and found it was more tolerable than riot's blatant homosexualry over their lore
the game is a piece of shit. i've stopped playing it entirely unless i'm in a vc with friends and they start playing it. devs blatantly misbalance the game to keep the competitive scene "interesting" (read: flashy) and always keep the same few champs ubermeta. as someone who doesnt play one of those Riot Select™ champions who are never out of meta, it's incredibly frustrating to deal with. so i've stopped dealing with it
we will never know because they don't release concurrent player figures like steam.
just like when they lied about the Dominion game mode, shit was played daily at every hour, queue times were less than 15sec, you could play it at anytime with real people, 0 bots
AND YET riot said it wasn't popular enough and that queue times were terrible and had no real player base. And even worse they killed 3v3 twisted treeline not much after

I stopped playing some time ago because of the lack of changes. Nothing new was being added. Also the item rework sucks yeah.

The only thing Riot fails to do is to have the balls to ban all players from ranked modes who have underwhelming statistics.
There really is no excuse for getting face rolled 1/15 k/d with less than 100 CS other than the player does not need to be playing in ranked mode

No, I think league is at it's all time best, however the lower ranks will be a test on your patience.
Like overwatch, cs:go or any other team vs team based game; when playing multiplayer games, remember sometimes the people who are on your team deserve to lose a match, even if you perform at a high level. They deserve to lose because of how poorly they play and you need to accept that.
Here is something to think about.
If you are playing a team vs team based game. Note who on your team is unreliable, poorly performing, subtract them from the equation.
This way you cannot be disappointed when you may expect them to perform with you and they do not. Take their performance as a bonus if it does come into play, but since they are unreliable, play as if they are not even there, or use them as bait.
This is how you have to play multiplayer games with pooled match making so you don't rage.
