Got me there, I didn't check for the camera. Right stick click works, but the axis aren't bound. This can be worked around with a steam controller layout easily. So out of the box isn't correct, but it's easily fixed.

Well I'm on nvidia so I'm a bit screwed in that regard. I just recently switched to Linux about 8 months ago and it's been a fun ride. I've seen that the beta nvidia drivers are finally trying to get Wayland working better but I have my doubts.
Back when I tried out openSUSE I used wayland a bit despite having nvidia and it worked for some games but x11 is still the go to for me.

          >Well I'm on nvidia so I'm a bit screwed in that regard.
Yeah that's what I'm saying, "bleeding edge" shit on linux shouldn't be "bleeding edge" after 5-10 years of development. Independent programmers can release the best open source android emulator exclusively for wayland but nvidia won't make a control panel for it, that's the real meme. They are greedy bastards.

the first step to get rid of chrome is to delete Steam.

      Anonymous

It's a lot easier than it looks, and gaming is actually really good now. If you start off with an easy distro like Mint then firefox etc is all preinstalled, you just need to get steam pretty much. (and if using nvidia make sure you have the drivers, they don't always come by default, AMD and Intel is fine though)
Like Manjaro I posteed about earlier, you don't even need to touch the terminal, Pamac can do all downloads and updates, even has the easiest AUR helper I've ever used.

          Anonymous

well you could use Lutris or something I guess, I've gotten old coom VNs to work before, it just depends on the game I guess. For emulation most work natively with Linux besides Xenia. I haven't really tried running much else besides steam games.

Also adding something as a non-steam game you can run with proton but obviously its reliant on steam. Heavy reliance on steam does seem like a negative especially since it's not free and open source

            Anonymous

Lutris with wine ge, verify gog signatures with osslsigncode (debian distributions will have to add -CAfile /dev/null to the command to verify due to a bug). Don't use any shell scripts some moron turd worlder tells you to use.

Flawlessly because they don't come with shitty DRM. For simplest experience use Bottles in flatpak, make a "bottle" which is a container that can run Windows software and there GOG is a single click install, they managed to make it simpler than Windows because you don't even need to visit a website and download an exe nor run it with admin permissions: it gives your games all the permissions they'd need within the container and nothing outside of it. Also runs most Windows games faster than Windows. For Steam use native Steam client instead of Bottles though, Steam has amazing Linux support

Depends on the game. Linux can play the vast majority of Steam games and pirated games can work with tools like Bottles and Lutris. It's not perfect though but Wine can surprise you.

The fact someone wrote a script in a terminal to do all that makes it no different from linux. Pot, meet kettle, 'cause you're all Black folk.

            Anonymous

Difference is that on windows you use 1 script to remove the shit you don't want and then everything works. On linux you need 20 scripts to add the things you need and then maybe it'll work like you want it to. Not to mention it's impossible to get a straight answer about what to use on linux for more specialized stuff unless it's somehow very popular or you happen to know about it already. On windows you can just use google to find the answer to most problems without the need to browse 50 differents places that are all going to give you different answers.

No matter what distro you install, its the wrong one. Don't bother asking help because you will be made fun of.
It'll take around a year and you'll fit into the Linux community just fine. Just don't tell when you started using Linux, unless its frontloaded with "I hate windows". Especially if you have any kind of problems or need troubleshooting, you'll be considered a troll on the spot.

Good luck. Its good if you wanna go through the learning curve and constant distro changing. It will however change your personality a lot so keep that in mind.

        >No matter what distro you install, its the wrong one.
People make the distro choice seem way more important than it actually is. You can do everything on every distro, the only real difference is how old your packages are and which package manager the distro uses. The rest of it is just autism over the default settings and applications the distro comes with.

What does this even mean? Proton isn't a distro. There is no "but". You install Mint, and then you install Steam+Proton on it.
            >...and then some Arch fanboys said I should use Arch, so I gave up on Linux instead of just ignoring them!

Manjaro is better but a little harder.
Mint is a very good starting point, google "FlatPaks", Mint's one and only downside is that the repository is always a little out of date out of a desire for stability.
It's dumb but an easy fix, it just means like if you want the newest Blender you need to install it as a FlatPak.

Just get LinuxRuleZ! repacks (Click and Install Shells a la GOG .exe, but it is a .sh file instead)
They include all the Windows staging modules and dependencies to run with Wine.
Just install Wine and install the shells like you would install a GOG .exe in windows.

You can find LinuxRuleZ! repacks at Zamunda.ch (click on bananas and search LinuxRuleZ or Linux Games)

Also will find LinuxRuleZ! in the Linux P2P section of Torrminatorr.com

LinuxRuleZ! is a Torrent repacker, so yeah you will need to torrent these.

Pic Related, it says Linux Native Games, but they are mostly Wine Repacks by LinuxRuleZ! but also lots of actual natives from freelinuxpcgames.com

Oh yeah, lots of NATIVE games at freelinuxpcgames.com as well, but LinuxRuleZ! makes Windows games basically native using the same tools the SteamDeck uses basically.

Or download the Linux version of your programs, that works too.
Though I understand it may be a bit more demanding currently than simply "click and run" for certain things, you legitemately can download a large portion of things, install them then run them just fine by double-clicking.

OpenBSD has a cucked license where all of these companies can just steal the code, lock it down, and sell it. Apple also did it. Their modifications are proprietary and if anyone reverse engineers them they will face the possibility of being sued out of house and home.

It's funny because the main reason to use Linux for me is that I don't have to use Windows, even if Linux is not perfect at least I'm not using that pajeetware. Using WSL completely misses the point.

                Same.
Also today I found out I can use bottles on japanese locale to install 7zip and use that to extract crappy zipped up jap games. Usually these zip files extracted on english locale ends up with garbled filenames. 7zip actually works within the bottle to extract files, which surprised me. If I give the damn thing permission to access beyond its container I could actually use it normally just like foobar2k and sumatrapdf.

Some distros have that ability patched into unzip, but I don't think any GUI archive managers support it. On Arch for example you can just use "unzip -O cp932" to extract your japanese zips with no locale frickery.

                Anonymous

Yes, but I don't want to touch the terminal, I wanted to see if you can do it via GUI without resorting to terminal. And it worked. I didn't have to toggle my actual locale to JP either, just the bottle itself.

Fair enough. I wrote a script for unzip and associated it with zip files so I can just double click to instantly extract my japanese porn games.

That's the sad part anon, which also applies to myself. Lots of users coming from windows can't do that or have never done that in their life aside from maybe daring to write an AHK scriptlet or using cheat engine to look up memory addresses following a guide.

Doing it that way with the built-in extractor Ark led to garbled characters the first time, which is why I had to resort to 7zip in a JP locale, took all of 2 minutes to do in bottles. Yes it's Goldberg levels of stupidity, but it worked anyway.

Ah, I see, Windows has that problem too, happened to me when I extracted oe cake (although, I used winrar for that and not the built-in extractor)

                >although, I used winrar for that and not the built-in extractor
Doesn't matter. The problem exists because the zip file specification lets you use any character encoding for filenames without actually specifying which encoding you're using, so there's no way for the archive manager to know what the filenames are supposed to be, or that there even is an error in the first place.
The only real solution would be to give the user an option to reload the zip with another encoding of their choice but I don't know of any archive manager that has that.

                >The only real solution would be to give the user an option to reload the zip

Or make compressed files have a header you can read what type of encoding it uses and let the archive manager work off that.

Yeah good luck changing the zip file specification and getting everyone on board with your changes.

looks like you're adding something that was already in the application launcher. Now try an executable that you had to build from source in some random user folder.

          Anonymous

          >Now try an executable that you had to build from source in some random user folder.

I haven't build anything from the ground up. I got all my stuff from my distro's repository via terminal, flatpak's hub, and librewolf from source. All those can be added to the taskbar without problems.

What I see that I can't add are random executables and executables straight off bottles, right-clicking sumatrapdf when it's on the taskbar to pin it shows a faded out option. I can see how someone used to being able to add anything on their taskbar, even the recycle bin, would be frustrated by the inability to do so.

So your original post is partially correct, but also wrong.

Depends on your hardware, and what experience you're after.
SteamOS on the Steam Deck is definitely the best experience right now.

There are similar OSes with similar levels of user experience for systems with similar hardware to the Deck. Linux distributions are kind of like mods for a video game, everyone has their own preferred setup, but they are all variations on the same theme.

Okay riddle me this: why would I switch to Linux when everything I want runs fine on Windows and I can reasonably expect this will continue. Meanwhile on Linux I have zero guarantee that any software will run properly and troubleshooting is extremely hard compared to Windows? It seems that for years now the main argument besides Linux is that certain distros with complete reliance on Steam give you a Windows like experience and run a handful of games perfectly, or even better than Windows. I find it weird that this essentially boils down to offering an even more limited experience than Windows with an unlimited amount of drawbacks if I try to wander out of the comfort zone. Not to mention the community is incredibly hostile against people with limited knowledge about computers. What is even more confusing is the backbone of the Linux gaming experience is Steam, a private company with private software but the defenders of free software have no issues with this.

For me, this sounds like desperation. The proud Linux community tries to casualise the entry into the ecosystem, hoping this will somehow raise their market share because by now it is obvious people will not learn complicated prompts for everyday use. But ultimately this turns Linux into a worse Windows while the user has even less knowledge about what is happening under the hood. You say the pinky promise of a private company is not enough for you to trust them. Well, I say the pinky promise of a handful of individuals (where no one is really responsible for anything) is even less trustworthy.

how is piracy on linux today? can you pitpoint steam's proton to a game and tell it to launch as if it would be the same game from steam? (i.e. with all tweaks set correctly by proton for it, like when you launch it as a purchased game from steam)

      Yes.

how much pita is the process? do you just launch it as a "non-steam game" and it automatically picks up, or you need some extra shenanigans, like lutris and other friends?

          >add non-steam game

            >add installer
            >set proton version
            >after installation is done, change path and working directory to the installed game
Works like 99.9% of the time

Sometimes Lutris is preferable, but it integrates nicely with Steam, too. This shortcut was created by Lutris itself.

            >play game

The only thing you have to add manually are the quotation marks, since Steam for some reason doesn't add them when the path contains spaces.

thanks anons; might switch eventually back to linux once microshit kill win10; hope wayland, nvidia, vrr and hdr will all work fine by the time.

Honestly, at this point it's not impossible that it could be about the same between two systems. Use windows and deal with bullshit in old games, use linux and deal with bullshit spread evenly at random between all games of all ages. Linux bullshit has an upside of being verbose in logs, so it's nearly always resolvable, windows bullshit has an upside of system popularity so there are always patches and pointers on what to do to make it run right on the internet.

Windows has HDR and native compatibility though, so between two, for pure gaming I'd obviously choose windows as any other reasonable person. But that being said, I daily linux with windows on the side, and I rarely jump back into windows to play games. I think my primary reason would be racing vidya on a wheel, and I'm pretty sure I could turn off FFB spring if I'd dive deep into it on linux side, just never bothered to dive into it when 1min OS restart resolves the issue
