>Play one of the campaign chapter >Dragon suddenly pop out and Rush B to my castle in a minute >Lose
Is this a thing? Also which races do you usually invite? For me it was the elves.
It has some significant flaws, but I still really enjoyed it. There also isn't much else like it, at least so far as I'm aware.
I do recall at least one mission where you have to deal with dragons fairly quickly. That isn't as hard to do as you might think, as even low level priestesses of Krypta perform pretty well against dragons. >Also which races do you usually invite?
Usually dwarves, because their defensive structures are absurdly good and the dwarves themselves are fairly useful. I do find elves to be a better choice in certain circumstances, though.
>as even low level priestesses of Krypta perform pretty well against dragons.
More specifically, Krypta, and even MORE specifically, skeletons, perform well against dragons due to high fire resist. Most of the enemies in the game have matchups they're good/bad at. Paladins and clerics stomp undead, Wizards can stomp melee as long as there is a buffer, and thieves get stomped by everything.
>skeletons, perform well against dragons due to high fire resist
Ackshually, it's because skellies have like 99 pierce resist and the fireballs from dragons count as piercing damage.
>here also isn't much else like it, at least so far as I'm aware
It's sandbox but if you want more fantasy kingdom simming, check Stronghold (the D&D one) from the 90s
You roll a character like one of the dungeon crawlers, and that is now someone on the council in your rpg city. You'll build facilities aligned to them, appropriate pops will gather and upgrade/level over time, when you've got a city of human fighter/thieves and want some variation, roll an elf to add to the council and unlock more buildings/pops etc.
In the meantime enemy dungeons will appear and spawn enemies who can attack your town, so building up a populace of levelled, well-equipped adventurers who you can rally out to suppress any and all threats is the arching goal
Literally one of the best games ever, gets a lil easy once you figure it out and the random generated maps/events can go a little overboard (the one that spawns a ton of monsters at all edges on an early day) but overall it’s an amazing game. Too bad majesty 2 could never replicate the AI that made 1 so great
It’s well known that krypta skeletons are basically anti dragon force. They have high dodge to missiles and dragon attacks count as missiles so you can effectively have an unhittable meat shield army blocking them. And typically I go elves for the easy market bonus but sometimes gnomes for early base survival and if you get dwarves you can effectively use ballistas to creep outwards against even the most absurd mod maps
Wasn't keen, much preferred Warlords Battlecry from the same era. Plays like a traditional RTS with some rpg mechanics like a persistent levelling hero, as well as levelling grunts that you may take map to map
[...] >play majesty 2 first >oh this is pretty cool why is everyone shutting on it >play majesty 1 >realize 2 is actually shit
I played Majesty 2, including all the DLC, and I loved it despite considering the game scuffed and somewhat sloppy in execution (feels like a ton of content was ultimately cut and we just got what we got).
Super duper curious about Majesty 1. Does anybody think they could pitch it to me on what it does so well vs the newer game?
I don't generally say this but I consider Majesty to be the perfect example of a sequel sucking out the soul from the series. I can't even describe it any other way but Majesty 1 is this cool, interesting, whimsical, janky ass game while Majesty 2 is a realistic game for realistic adults that don't need no fun. Another perfect example is KIng's Bounty(Legend, Crossworlds etc) vs King's Bounty 2.
no gnomes in majesty 2. they build fast as shit and can level up. they make that aspect of the game less tedious, majesty 2 feels slow as molasses without them.
I think some of the other cults were missing too. Less content, less sovl. the only interesting addition is the party making making thing and that didnt work very well.
All the sovlfvl voicelines were just ported from 1
Majesty 1 has more heroes, buildings, monsters, scenarios are better, free play has more options, multiplayer, and AI is better different heroes can act very differently compared to 1. Music is better, art is better, narrator in 1 is GOAT. Can't remember the writing in 2 but it was a little funny at times in 1.
it's like 3 usd on sale if you don't want to pirate it. runs on my machine no issue.
The AI of majesty one simply wasn’t replicated on 2. 1s feels much more organic between different units whereas two had weird scaling with who would or wouldn’t approach bounty flags or raid outposts etc
What the other anons saying about the AI sucking are true, and I can give a very specific example: In Majesty 1, the different characters respond to bounty flags more readily based on their own personal interests, to a point where it sometimes wasn't needed at all. Warriors would typically respond to any bounty flag placed on an enemy near the city extremely quickly, even if it was 100 gold. Rangers would respond to Explore flags as low as 100. In fact, Rangers would often just explore on their own because uncovering fog-of-war increased Ranger XP, and if there was no fog of war for them anymore, rangers would actually LEAVE the map on their own, "Exploring distant lands." On the other hand, Solari Priests would routinely run up and down the city, almost never leaving the city boarder, just looking for internal threats and acting as guards. In Majesty 1, I could analyze, identify the weakness of my city, and then build accordingly knowing how the heroes would act on their own.
One of the first experiences I had in Majesty 2 was plopping down a ranger guild in the tutorial, walking away for half-an-hour to deal with something, and coming back to 0% of the map explored AT ALL. They just hung out at camp all day. When I finally put down an explore flag, they didn't even respond to it until I had put in like 400-500 gold, and when I did, the rangers, warriors, clerics, thieves, and wizards all equally responded and went after that same flag.
Majesty 1 = Boomer ambition to do things on their own.
Majesty 2 = Zoomer apathy.
One of the most replayable games ever I can always go back every year or so. Wish there was a nice remaster that scaled up the sprites and such for high resolutions, there's a HD version on steam but the ui stays tiny and just looks off compared to playing on a CRT back in the day. It's got some mods on the workshop though you can frick around with.
Haven't played in like... 25 years?
But I remember absolutely loving it as a kid. One of those games that pretty much defined my childhood.
I should revisit it one day.
It was a really cool game for its time. But I played it recently and it is carried so heavily by its fantastic voice acting.
The concept is neat, i'm really not sure how it could be expanded further to be more of a game. But it's click a few things and watch shit happen simulator style.
imo spells feel either cheap or like busy work so expanding them isnt the answer. Maybe some kind of convuluted tech tree or eco related stuff for your base would make more of a game.
2 is shit because no gnomes, slowed the game down so much and made it more of a slog.
>dota 2 has some voice lines based on the majesty ones, since they're so good
which ones would they be? can't think of any off hand
Yeah, it's absolutely amazing, and via an effort of some autist it's actually compatible with modern systems fully, so you just play it and it works. I love this game so much I've completed a few times in last couple of years.
Is there anything else like Majesty? Nowadays the "you're a governor of a city in a fantasy setting" always comes with "BUT NOW YOU HAVE TO PLAY AN RTS AND MAKE UNITS LIKE WARCRAFT" or there's no combat at all.
I just want to make blacksmiths and taverns and see groups of npcs organically form and go out to claim my bounties.
nah there is no indie majesty that I'm aware of. It's pretty much a tower defense but instead of towers you build a base and hire dudes while being bombarded by unfair bullshit.
seems like an indie COULD make a majesty clone though, like the production requirements aren't that high
would just need some good art and some SOULFUL writing/VA
I've made a Majesty prototype myself, got all of the functionality and even learned how to scrape the original game for stats, but got burned as it came to the asset creation.

The campaign is really just a puzzle game in a lot of the missions. You can't just play it like it's a free-form kingdom management game.
