Nah. It's pretty fun though.
>sequel to acclaimed and successful game
>sleeper hit
The only thing sleeping about is the advertising campaign from Square-Enix sending it out to die because Nintendo wasn't going to do the heavy lifting.
>The only thing sleeping about is the advertising campaign from Square-Enix sending it out to die
Is there a similar sized developer / publisher who shoots themselves in the foot as much as fricking SE does? I will never understand why the only game they give the limelight to is Final Fantasy. And even then, their marketing always feels so bizarre.
>I will never understand why the only game they give the limelight to is Final Fantasy.
Square-Enix recognized the endgame of all major publishers is having 1-2 big franchises they can pour all their money into and get infinite money from.
See the big four
>Activision: Call of Duty
>Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed/Far Cry(in alternating years)+Rainbow Six Siege
>EA: EA Sports/Apex Legends/formerly Battlefield
>Take-Two: 2k, GTA
But they sold off their entire SQE catalog(to Embracer who paid 4 times as much for Gearbox, and then basically immediately made all the money back and doubled it with Tomb Raider alone) and they're trying a drunken hail mary with their Splatoon clone(of which they have been curiously tightlipped on monetization).
The last people to give much of a meaningful shit about trying to make Dragon Quest big out west was Iwata and Reggie, the former of which died and the latter left video game production.
So now they're trying to bruteforce the problem with Final Fantasy like they did with all their other AAAs like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex and Sleeping Dogs, the last of which I think genuinely could've been their golden boy had they not killed it with mismanagement. Hong Kong political situation gets too testy? Go to Taipei. Or do other Asian nations, K-dramas are the hottest thing on the planet, or go nuts in Southeast Asia like Indonesia or the Philippines.
So it's a "cart before the horse" problem. That and their executives consult fortune tellers so Japanese voodoo.
>or the Philippines
low level drug runner trying to get out of the business having to deal with the war between organized crime and duterte's zealous war on drugs would've been kino a few years back, but alas SEA remains untapped potential
OCHETTE'S GAME
Would you eat her jerky anon?
off of her tummy
my man
How is she so fricking powerful?
I kneel.
I still need to beat whatever the superbosses name is and finish the night post game
i havent finished octo 1s post game and i likely wont finish 2s either even though i really wanted to. it is what it is
The final boss of Octo 1 beat my ass so hard in spite of using the ez Tressa-sidestep gimmick strats; I went in at level 100 and that motherfricker scales like crazy I found out. I’ve heard the finale of Octo 2 isn’t as much of a superboss so I’ve been tempted to go back in and finish it but the memories of getting filtered by the first one always hold me back
Figuring out how to beat Galdera in the original was a fricking experience though. You don't usually get presented such a challenge in a turn based game, even when picking the hardest difficulties.
For real though, how does it compare to the first one? I loved the art style and some of the characters of the first one but the progression, exploration, and story felt like it was made by a fricking AI and a bit of a slog. Is it a significant improvement over exploring a giant circle and then repeatedly exploring a giant bigger circle further out?
It's much better than the first one. I just got screwed over in advertisement. The sequel sold 1 million copies in 3 months while the first one only took 3 weeks.
Nah, it's just a sleeper
maybe if it had a good story or some challenges
walking around the world doing the same simplistic fights over and over to a shitty story is a hard pass
Cringe take my guy
I'm enjoying it immensely, about to finish up Temenos' story, first one I'll be completing.
Tenemos is gay.
Ehh, he's alright. Detective vision was a nice twist, I wish that got incorporated into his path actions.
Oh shit, I didn't even realize until now.
it was so weird hearing his VA as sidon
I really liked the first game, but stopped playing somewhere past the halfway point because I was suddenly underlevelled and grinding is shit. This is while still battling the vast majority of random encounters, so I wasn't actively avoiding fights. Is that still a thing in this one?
I heard it was much better than the first game which I'm playing right now
In that it made me sleep? Yes.
I liked the first one a lot, but I stopped playing the sequel before I even got to the halfway point.
The characters and the gameplay were better than the original, but the problem with 8 storylines that play the exact same is that it gets boring and predictable fast.
It's a shame. I was hyped for the game but I don't even want to finish playing it.
This was my experience not playing the first one. Will say it was impressive to make 8 characters that were all fine or better and the stories weren't offensive, just way too many and you feel like you have to beeline to or you'll make the dungeon/boss a complete joke. A lot of by the numbers stuff there but it has to be that way when bad guy gets like 3 scenes.
Personally, I don't think any video game with multiple main characters is good.
It's shit. Better than the first game albeit barely and that's not saying much
Missionary with Castti
Doggy style with Throné
Cowgirl with Agnea
Holding hands with Ochette
Yes it is. It's best soundtrack of the year too, btw.
Menu games aren't real games, no wonder it flopped
Osvald/Temenos/Partitio/Hikari too stronk!
I never got around to the first game, should I just dive into the second? The FF16 demo put me off, but I would like a JRPG to get into. I like challenging combat with lots of stats and classes to tinker with, party composition to mess with, that sort of stuff. I can take or leave the story and I like to have as much freedom as possible.
I liked triangle strategy combat more than this tbh
I am a Casti swordsmaster guy. But Ochette is 1000% cute
Castti is so badass
It helps that she is legit one of the strongest characters as well.
She literally designed to be cute. I think the art book called her a mascot like character plus it's hard not to be cute when she's cat-like and smol.
Tressa is still cutest
My favorite part of the first game was when she learned about prostitution from Primrose and began selling her holes for profit.
Do you have any evidence to those claims?
it was good but combat felt a bit trivial with how powerful everyone is
Partitio>Osvald>Hikari>Castti>Throne>Ochette>Agnea>Temenos
Ayo what is Temenos dead last? I'm 100% positive either him or Partitio are the most popular characters in the game
Temenos' story is shit. It massively fumbles with execution despite being directly tied to the main plot.
Haven't played the series but I'm interested should I start with the first or just play the second?
the second one is the better game so it would be reasonable to say play that but imo, going back to the first one after having played 2 already would be very jarring. but on the other hand starting with the worse one might stop you from ever trying the second one.
mind you, the first one isnt bad by any means. its just that 2 is considerably better.
2 is basically just better than 1 in every way. You might still enjoy 1 but it has very obvious flaws, most of which 2 fixes. The only two things you miss from skipping 1 is the music (fantastic) and the story and characters (mixed).
I haven't finished all the stories in 1 but so far I thought ORUBERIKU and Cyrus were enjoyable
There are definitely good ones. The male characters have pretty decent stories overall, the females are where it gets wonky. Except for Primrose's, they're pretty forgettable.
That's a sexist take anon.
And Primrose's story shits the bed near the end of it.
so far I'm failing to see the common theme for Tressa and Alfyn's path.
>Olberic path tells you the old kingdom was guarding some magic gate
>Cyrus path tells you there's a necronomicon that allows to use powers of some sealed god
>Ophilia path tells you said god can use human sacrifices and the flame kindling stuff to grant powers
>Therion path tells you about the 3 stones that are used for a ritual at that one gate mentioned during olberic's path
>Alfyn ??? (currently on chapter 3)
>Tressa ??? (same as Alfyn)
>Primrose is the same except I suspect the three dudes to be cultists of some sort, and Prim's family are the ones who killed an ancient evil king (Chapter 3 as well)
>H'aanit learns about the church hunting the equivalent of a basilisk (chapter 3 again)
>You'll understand the connection by the end of their stories.
>2 is basically just better than 1 in every way
I didn't find the OST of 2 to be as memorable as 1. I'm not saying it's better or worse, I think 1 was just such a surprise for me how much I loved that OST and the way the character themes melded into boss battles and such was just so enjoyable that 2 just kind of felt like retreading the same thing.
If I had to nitpick 2, that would probably be my biggest issue.
>took Hikari as my lead
>he demolishes an already easy game
>if you want to minmax, he gets ridiculous bullshit through learnable skills
that's our katana user
haha...
nippon steel stronk
Hikari was doing like 200k+ damage per round during my play. Dude plays the whole game for you.
No dating, no play
Octopathbros... I kneel.
Final Fantasy hasn't been Final Fantasy in a long while.
Final Fantasy hasn't been the Final Fantasy that these people want since FFX. I will never understand this complaint as someone that plays and enjoys both OT games and FF games. I understood this complaint back when FFXIII released maybe. But "This isn't FF" has been going on for fricking decades at this point.
>I understood this complaint back when FFXIII released maybe. But "This isn't FF" has been going on for fricking decades at this point.
But did anything change? We've only had two mainline entries since 13. Not counting 16.
That it's been 1.5 decades since then changes what exactly?
You really think the buffer of two mainline entries means that 16 doesn't need to play like Final Fantasy any more?
Guess FF16 should have been a card game. Why not? It's been 2 decades.
>mainline
Anything with the name of Final Fantasy on it gets the same complaints thrown at it so that's hardly a fair restriction in this argument.
>Guess FF16 should have been a card game
Yes I agree they should've bought back Tetra Master
>Anything with the name of Final Fantasy on it gets the same complaints thrown at it so that's hardly a fair restriction in this argument.
No. This isn't true at all. Fricking no one complains about the Final Fantasy Tactics games playing like Tactics games instead of like Final Fantasy.
That Explorers played like Monster Hunter instead of like Final Fantasy wasn't controversial.
No one demanded that Chocobo Racing should have been anything but a kart racer just because it didn't play like Final Fantasy.
Dissidia.
Theatrhythm.
Crystal Chronicles.
The entire Mana series.
I could list the full list of spinoffs. How could you possibly make the claim that anything with the name of Final Fantasy gets these complaints?
>How could you possibly make the claim that anything with the name of Final Fantasy gets these complaints?
Ah I guess it was just a fever dream the months of shitposting SoP got that it wasn't a real FF game.
It's a spinoff.
It is a real Final Fantasy game. But it's "real" in the same sense that Mario Party is a real Mario game.
>Guess FF16 should have been a card game. Why not? It's been 2 decades.
Some of the best turn based battle systems are card games.
i will not yield
Frick off back to your twitter alts, homosexual
His opinion on what FF is supposed to be has about as much weight as "the main heroine is un-coomable, this is not FF"
Final Fantasy fans are so moronic
How?
In what world are Octopath 2 one dimensional characters interesting?
Are Octopath 2 characters that good? They seem like forgettable trash just like anything nu-Square these days
loved the first one. second just felt like a remix. great game but couldnt keep my interest. will finish the endgame someday
Finish it today, anon.
>same game as the first
>same number of characters
>mostly the same jobs
>literally the same superboss
>same shit player sprites vs great enemy sprites
>same no real dungeons, just 3 screens every time
>same shit equipment system where there are 5000 items but about 3 of them are actually meaningful
octopath 2 is mid, just like octopath 1 anon. the systems are all barebones and have little depth, the areas are all tiny and designed with no inspiration.
this is what happens when you get zero fricking budget and have to cut corners everywhere
I found casti's intelligence very cute
Castti is dumb.
Can I pirate it yet? Without emulators, of course
i kinda forgot about this game after the final boss kicked my ass and i put it down
Get good son
It’s incredible , easily one of the decade’s best RPGs
Sell me on it
