Is piracy ethical?

I just pirated Baldur's Gate 3 because there is no demo and I wanted to try out the game before I spend any money and I don't know if I'll enjoy the gameplay also this game is being hyped so I wanted to check it out.
The last time I bought a game due to hype and didn't enjoy it was Diablo 4 which is when I realized and don't like ARPG games and wasted $70

If you know where to look you can largely avoid viruses, that being said there's a scandal going on right now that said a 1337x game had mining software hidden inside it.

        >a 1337x game had mining software hidden inside it
Yeah, I've never trusted that site, it always seemed shady to me. Any website that's ad-ridden and throws 5 pop ups in my face before I even get to the file I want to download is a red flag, it basically tells you that the owner probably wants to make money off a site that is de-facto dependent on people who seed the files for nothing in exchange.

I also don't get why repackers like Fit-Girl get so much credit, why the frick would you want to introduce a third party that can infect your file when you can just download the release? Well, unless you have really shitty internet, then I get it.

Most pirates are stupid tbh. Just download from the source or try to get into a private tracker.

Piracy is fine. It’s not stealing.
I pirated BG3, played for 10 hours, realized the writing is shit and the game is massively overhyped. Glad I didn’t waste any money.

It's a statement that the pricing/quality needs work. If you're not willing to be realistic expect your shit to get pirated. Imagine living in a world where you have utterly no entertainment as a shut-in social-reject: You go outside and try to socialize, it doesn't work. You come inside where it's safe? Nothing to do but sleep and stare at the wall. Want entertainment of any kind? Not only is it too expensive, but even if you save up for it, it's not worth that price; But they get away with it. So frick 'em, steal it.

Buy it on steam and play for 2 hours if you want a demo. You don't get to infringe on someone's product because you want to try it for free. There's a plethora of videos to get feel for the gane

2 hours isn't enough to determine if the game is good, especially when you spend 1 hour creating your character.

Piracy of AAA games is always 100% morally okay.

I don't care really if it's ethical or not, however, personally I would say that most vidya companies deserve their games to be pirated. Look at all forced online bullshit, forced online launchers, forced updates, DRM, games as a service crap, psychological manipulations, MXTs, killing games and removing content and so on.
If you want to control data on your PC you essentially have to pirate of buy on GoG these days. Maybe some other places that sell you games without DRM and forced online services.

And I would say that technically abandonware is piracy in legal sense, yet it's one of few good video game preservation methods.

you pirating a game isn't gonna hurt a company that makes millions it only hurts indie game developers probably, if you really like a game you should consider paying for it after finishing playing it as a way to thank the company or show them that you liked their product thats what im intending to do with bioware since i loved their mass effect trilogy

If Pirates waited at least a month- two months after a game released to release the cracked version, Piracy wouldn't be as much of an issue.

It's this need that pirates have to play everything day 1 that causes the issue.

Piracy doesn't really hurt the developer that much, that's why No-DRM is more and more of a thing now.

You need to be more than a brainlet to understand the issue more in depth.

People usually pirate games for two reasons, and it's because either:
    >they can't afford the game
    >they don't care about the game enough to spend X amount of money on it

In both cases, they wouldn't have spent the money anyway. If the game gets cracked, they would simply pirate the game and play it, and if it doesn't, they wouldn't play the game. So simply, the developers doesn't lose the potential customers from piracy, because the potential customer would have most likely simply bought the game. Also pirates usually don't even beat the games, they just try them and dump them a couple of hours later.

That's also why games on steam and other platforms are much cheaper in russia and other poorer regions even if it's not fair for western customers who paid twice the price, because it's better to sell the product at a much lower price and get some profit, than not to sell the game at all.

I pirated BG3 because I wouldn't have bought it for the full price, and I'm probably not even going to beat the game.

    >Is piracy ethical?
Absolutely. These days marketing budget rival dev budgets, and marketing has zero moral issues about using every single trick in the israelite book. Just look at all the advertising spam here. No, the spam isn't actually meant to get us to buy PRODUCT, it's done to manipulate search engines (look up Search Engine Optimization (SEOI). Every board here has at least 2 archives, so every spam post counts at least triple for trending purposes. If the spam also manages to piss off whatever core fans of PREVIOUS PRODUCT that are here, it's even better because they'll start b***hing about the current iteration of PRODUCT, which just helps the shills SEO efforts. A random drooling election tourist buying something because of the spam is just a random insignificant bonus.

If they can't be assed to provide a reasonable demo, or even betatest their shit for that matter (day1 patches lol), then I'll have to demo it myself.

You shouldn't pirate indie games, nobody really cares about AAA or AA games

For me, it's not about being indie or AAA. You see it when devs respect you, and indie devs tend to respect you more because they're closer to their public. They literally cannot exist if they behave like c**ts.
In my case, basic respect is
      >free demo
      >no dlc, expansions are ok
      >fair price/hour

And then you have devs that go the extra mile for you (wube, valve) :
      >cross platform
      >optimization for low end hardware
      >centralized and advanced modding
      Bless them.
