Neither. It takes place on a fantasy world where those geographic distinctions don't exist. She's a human looking cartoon character in a fantasy setting, she is not a literal human race of any distinction.

Yeah sure, the devs, designers and artists never had a vision, when they created the game. That vision never had background for the character or the origin/origin of said character.

Space in older video games is usually abstract or symbolic. You're looking at it literally. A frequent argument is that this is a choice in order to compensate for technological limitations but I think there are a few advantages this has over modern literalist sandbox gameplay. I find many modern games have spaces that are boring to explore because there are repetitive spaces with nothing in them. On the other hand, many retro games have spaces that feature v little more than the essentials. I'm fond of many jrpg towns that contain little more than a shop, an inn, and one or two houses with npcs that deliver worldbuilding information or hints regarding future quests. I don't think the realistic spaces of all modern games are bad, but maybe they aren't necessary for every game in every genre.

you basically described why i stopped playing jrpgs after the ps1 era. the soul was gone and it was replaced by pointless realism slop. these games only worked when your imagination had to fill in the gaps

Well said anon. Maybe younger generations won't appreciate that older design concept but I know exactly what you are talking about.

you basically described why i stopped playing jrpgs after the ps1 era. the soul was gone and it was replaced by pointless realism slop. these games only worked when your imagination had to fill in the gaps

That is how I feel with FFVII and older FF games. Your mind fills in a lot of the gaps or what is missing. At least I always figured that was the intention. So to me the games feel much more epic or big in scope because of it. Most open world games today aren't even that big by realism standards ironically enough despite the fact they try to be realistic.

Military background and immigration shit makes me think Laguna was Vietnamese coded and since Squall was inspired by Gackt, Raine could be Japanese, making Squall half.

The Russian state started to exist as a centralized state in 862. This is considered to be the year of creation of the Russian state because this year the townspeople of Novgorod (a city in the North-West of the country) invited Rurik, a Varangian prince from Scandinavia, to reign. In 1862, Russia celebrated the 1000th anniversary of its statehood, and in Novgorod there is a memorial dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the country.

In 882, Rurik's successor Prince Oleg, who was, actually, playing the role of regent at Rurik's young son because Rurik had died by that time, came to Kiev. He ousted two brothers who, apparently, had once been members of Rurik's squad. So, Russia began to develop with two centers of power, Kiev and Novgorod.

The next, very significant date in the history of Russia, was 988. This was the Baptism of Russia, when Prince Vladimir, the great-grandson of Rurik, baptized Russia and adopted Orthodoxy, or Eastern Christianity. From this time the centralized Russian state began to strengthen. Why? Because of a single territory, integrated economic ties, one and the same language and, after the Baptism of Russia, the same faith and rule of the Prince. The centralized Russian state began to take shape.

Back in the Middle Ages, Prince Yaroslav the Wise introduced the order of succession to the throne, but after he passed away, it became complicated for various reasons. The throne was passed not directly from father to eldest son, but from the prince who had passed away to his brother, then to his sons in different lines. All this led to the fragmentation and the end of Rus as a single state...

It is worth noting that the world of FF8 is supposed to be multilingual. With the school's computers having Japanese and English text (in the Japanese version)

One of the jokes on the bulletin board is that people are only using their initials. But Xu's name is Chinese and can be pronounced "Jo" in Japanese. Which messes with Seifer who is like "WHO IS THIS?!"

Dollet is definitely supposed to be french and "Loire" is french. Julia, Rinoa's mom, is probably french.
Rinoa or Winoa, is a Dakota Indian name.

Fury Caraway, or Fyūrī Kāwei, is probably Indian as well. You know, the Fukawei Tribe. They traveled miles and miles until the chief looked around, raised his hands and shouted
    "Weir tuh Fukawei!" [/joke]

Probably meant to be European inspired like a lot of the characters but designed looking Japanese because of the artist and for the expressions. In FF12 Ashe was meant to look outright French but they made these separate renders of her for promos that look more Japanese specifically to be more appealing in Japanese promotions.
They ended up hiring that Italian artists to design FF characters and give them more naturally European looks when it's intended. It's funny because one of his designs was Iris and everyone assumes she's meant to be Asian.

The distinction is moot. Japanese characters inhabit a sort of pseudo-caucasoid sense of self. This actually goes back centuries, long before anime. When the first foreign traders arrived Japan saw the way the winds were blowing on the collectivist asian mainland and realized they wanted no part of that. They started depicting themselves and even see themselves as "whiter" than chinese. There are old japanese scrolls and woodblocks that show Japanese ambassadors meeting with westerns and both are drawn tall, straight-backed, with large eyes, while the chinese ambassadors in the same scene look like the classic yellow stereotype: small, hunched over, scraggly hair and mustaches, squinty-eyed, crooked teeth, rubbing hands, etc. Despite far-western accusations of Japan being "conformist" in comparison, they're still psychologically a heavily more individualist culture than China or Korea. This is why I can't take people who fixated entirely on race too seriously; it's fair to say that despite similar genetic lines, the average Chinese and Japanese person are more alien to each other culturally than the average White and Black Americans are racially.
