I had most fun with 3
I always liked the Saturday-morning cartoon like animated intro. Made me wish for a full cartoon series.
As for the game itself, I don't remember it well. Then again at the time I was a kid too stupid to get the gameplay.

Oh man I really didn't know what I was doing with that one, from what I remember the buildings had no descriptions so you just had to know which one does what. Still played it a lot, didn't care.
The only thing better about the first one compared to the second is the random map generator AND the ability to pick your starting spot. S2 is objectively superior otherwise. Literally just an upgrade. Oh and the music is better in the first one too.
I really didn't like that you get to choose the spawn point, why be pressured to find a good spot while your enemies have already started building

Don't get me wrong, S2 is great. Amazon's campaign is simply better
2 > 3 for me. 10th Anniversary + expansion also worth mentioning, gameplay-wise it's the same as 2 with some QOL changes. Your ppl find their way back to your territory instead of aimlessly wandering till they starve to death. Less rage-inducing episodes when your logistics get into a jam / deadlock because your guys keep hauling unnecessary goods completely ignorant of the priorities you set.
Lol for me 3 was more comfy. I love to make heavy fortified bases with lot of castles and towers. The key for comfyies was to make temples as fast as possible and rss magic spam also graphics in 3 is more pleasant to eyes. 4 is still great but i dislikes campaign and dark tribe stuff
S2 was great. Maybe the best. However, S4 is faster paced. Probably more fun re-playing.

I just wish there was some middle ground between S3 and 4, combining features of both. I fricking hate 4's rework on construction (levellers stop digging if you stop the construction). and I hate how race-specific goods are non-transferable in 3 (so stealing alcohol from other race means it is useless for you). I like the colony expedition from 4, but I like ships from 3 better. 3 has better unit improvement system, but 4 has special units and commanders. And then there are factions themselves, where I would love to have all 7 of them in one game.
Also: frick 4's campaign, what a shitshow

In fact, that's my main gripe with 4 - the campaign is fricking shit. At least with 3, it's fun and a frickload of missions for each faction. You get third of those numbers in 4

never really gave 4 a try, and 5+ had terrible tos.
the series had potential, but they decided to kill it instead
graphics is something which always put me off settlers, s2 is fine but next games are like mobile games designed for girls and 5year old kids, similar with 10th anniversary edition what a horrible art style.
I thought the graphics were quite charming, though I had an issue that compared to S2 the buildings looked extremely samey especially for non-Roman cultures, pic related
