One track? So, you just race the same place over and over, so that you can get money to improve your car, so that you can stand up to the challenge of... racing the same place. You don't even get to tune your car at the start of the game, save for steering and brake response, so you have to save up for "tunable" parts which is moronic because these are tuner cars; tuners love Nissans, Subarus, and other makes in the first place because you can tune them fresh from the factory. Saving up the cash is a pain as you don't get a lot of money from winning races, and since upgrades don't open up the possibility of making more money, buying anything but the most expensive components is a waste of money. You're not incentivised to spend your money, which is fine as I'm not incentivised to play the game!
Plus, the collision physics are also awful, which is to say they are nonexistent. Hard to believe this came out the same year as GT2. That said, the aesthetics are awesome: the graphics, the UI, and the soundtrack are excellent.

>fell for the Dreamcast meme
its good. if you're not a weeb you wont like it. you can go enjoy the in your face hip hop car culture that's plagued the genre for 2 decades now on the ps2
>if you're not a weeb you wont like it.
Why would weebs prefers this to the drift series? And yet somehow it's more popular, can't be a weeb thing
LOL what does this have to do with hip hop?
Never heard of this game but you must be exceptionally dense to not realise he’s referring to games onwards from Need For Speed Underground that placed heavy emphasis on rap and hip hop styles.
What does hip hop have to do with complaining about this game?
spot on, except I'm not a weeb and I love this game. nailed night driving vibes like no other.
Assetto Corsa with some mods has made this game obsolete. Of course that's outside of the scope of this board.
Daily reminder that comments like this only brings downfall of racing games even further.
How so? Have you played it? XR3 was my jam for a long time when I wasn't playing A Spec.
I only played TXR3 at my friend's house when we weren't taking turns playing San Andreas and I remember being disappointed when I could only drive on the highway. I still played it a lot but even as a teenager it was missing something for me. I often play the Shutoko map on Assetto Corsa, in virtual reality as well, and it's a spiritual successor to the old games. It's a treat and scratches the itch a little bit, but nothing has ever been the "perfect" racing game for me. Gran Turismo is too stuffy and Forza too cheesy. Racing games suffer from the same problem that killed RTS and old-style FPS: People pick a game they like and stick with it for a long time, how many consoles have more than one or two sims in the same genre? More arcade racers on PS2 and Xbox, less and less on later consoles. I can't really think of any racing games recently released that weren't part of an established franchise already. PC is iRacing or everything else, it's a wasteland out there and it has been for years.
He's not wrong but then again people need to resurrect TXR's versus mechanics, preferably for online play
This game is about historical illegal street racing on a specific Tokyo highway, of course it's going to be the same place over and over. Everything else I agree with though as it is implemented that way to in a attempt to keep you playing.
>of course it's going to be the same place over and over
Except sequels had other highways too, it wasn't just one highway in the entirety of Japan that had street racing.
Back in the day sequels used to iterate on and expand the game they proceed, yes.
Genki actually made a Wangan Midnight game for the PS3, but it was only sold in Japan and Hong Kong. I think the HK version has English menus, but good luck finding a copy.
They really missed the bus not locking down the WM and ID licenses for console games, probably would've saved them from going under
Sega made home ports of Initial D Arcade Stages 2 to 4. Again, all of them are Japan only.
>Special Stage (PS2) = IDASv2 (with the Integra nerfed)
>Street Stage (PSP) = IDASv3
>Extreme Stage (PS3) = IDASv4
BamCo make the WM arcade games, didn't stop Genki from getting the license for their game.
Perhaps console and arcade licenses are different. Hell WMPS2 is essentially a port of the 2001 Wangan Midnight game, although Namco was not involved with that apart from a special thanks credit.
FRICKING HATE THE COLLISIONS, why is my car the only object in the game that is subject to the laws of motion? Everything else is an unstoppable force that has no reaction to contact, but not you
Yet... it's pretty addicting. Would be a good game to play while chilling in a call
genki are a bunch of morons, the main draw is that its basically a wangan midnight simulator, but most other games are a better choice. not much else of that nature you can get on the Dreamcast though, apart from MSR and sega GT. the other 6th gen consoles have much beefier racing libraries.
its based on shuto racing in the 90s, which was a real thing that took place, that had a manga made about it called wangan midnight and an anime done by the same people who did stage 4 of initial d, and is often considered a "sister series" to initial d, despite the two being pretty unrelated. the final boss is WM's main character in literally every game except shutoko battle 01/txr3 and the kaido battle/drift games. its absolutely for weebs.
Genki did Wangan Midnight console games (the PS2 version was originally just the arcade game they developed for Namco) even.
>is often considered a "sister series" to initial d, despite the two being pretty unrelated.
Helps that both are serialized in the same magazine (Young Magazine).
>its based on shuto racing in
Yeah I know, I've read Wangan Midnight, me and nobody fricking else because it's not popular at all. Meanwhile every weeb knows Initial D. So why is the highway Genki series more popular than the touge Genki series? Weebs prefer touge, who are these highway maniacs, you can't handwave it with "weebs"
>who are these highway maniacs
Judging by the way they type in Assetto Corsa, broccoli heads and nig-ajacents. It's my preferred drunk driving simulator.
yeah they're pretty fricking annoying. i figured this shit would be popular with actual weebs but its just obnoxious "lonely driver" "drift phonk" types.
Nailed it on the head, if there were any other games I would play them instead.
It's nearly everything I ever wanted out of a racing game, I bartered locally for the headset because I wasn't sure if I would like it and I spent six months playing it without anything else. I try to limit myself to one or two nights a week.
Because in Japan, actual petrolheads liked Wangan Midnight whilst Initial D was just another normalgay battle manga. Nobody fantasised about powersliding a shitty old Corolla around a mountain road, everybody fantasised about being a rich doctor who moonlit as a street racer with a $100,000 built 500 horsepower 200mph Skyline. Street racing in Japan was always more about highways than touge runs, touge was more associated with bikers.
it's literally just the eurobeat music.
>is mad at the game because he sucks
It's not my fault the cars don't fricking indicate
whats worse is when they turn JUST to frick you over and then go back into their lane once you've allready crashed.
git gud, simple as
i already beat it
then why are you falling to avoid cars
The only way you would tolerate this game would be if you were introduced to Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune, first, and TXR is the closest you’ll ever get to having WMMT at home.
I mean, apart from spending $10,000+ for ordering a cabinet…
Teknoparrot ain't half bad at emulating a few versions. The earlier entries are Chihiro so I hope improving Xbox emulation will make those viable too.
>this gtBlack person didn't understand the game
you are moronic go watch wangan midnight or something

I’ve been in the mood to play TXR2, lately, but I do not want to spend $80 on a Dreamcast just to play it. Are Dreamcast emulators good?
TXR Zero doesn’t fill the void.
if you emulate shutokou battle 2, you should check out the unused cars https://youtu.be/cA42g7VRuSU?si=In0FJ0IbVXxTLJJ7
pretty sure retroarch has a DC core. there's also redream, which i used a few times. no idea how it compares to the other ones though since i usually just play on my dreamcast.
I've been playing TXR1 Redream using a Raspberry Pi4 and it runs great, 60fps all the way even when underclocked (necessary to get composite). I don't think a desktop computer will have any issues running Dreamcast games
>games brazil
thurd world?
My favorite thing about TXR is the lore.
the localized names are so cringe, such a pointless change too
