It was pretty neat for the couple of games I played early yesterday, later on when I tried to login after work there were serious server issues though and I couldn't get into any more games. If they iron out connectivity issues it seems like a pretty fun f2p tarkov alternative

      Is the Cycle Frontier good?

but to answer your question it "feels" like a more approachable tarkov, its the only other "loot, shoot, 'n scoot" type shooter i've played
i havent liked "a new spin on shooters" in a while but this format works out somewhat for me.
now if only we can have one that incorporates advanced movement

correct, it tries to be a casualized tarkov while the current state of tarkov isn't even what it wanted to be but got stuck as when it became a streamer bait

        >old cycle was fun as shit
Frontier has its moments, but nothing beats working on contracts to the last minute, getting killed, and panic buying a hovercycle to outrun the storm while this was blasting in your ear.

any idea what triggers their melee? sometimes ill run into one that constantly goes for melee over its ranged atk even if i back off it zerg rushes forever.

also any info on the knife dmg to players? how any hits does it take to kill a green armor?

        >also any info on the knife dmg to players? how any hits does it take to kill a green armor?
I don't know the specifics, but after being knifed in the back by a noob I was trying to help mine while wearing greens, I can confirm all it takes is two charged melees to kill someone in greens.
Pro tip: if someone is running around with nothing but a knife, just kill them; those bastards are treacherous loot goblins.

yeah. def 2 hits. i shanked 2 solos on Crescent. i was hiding cuase i heard fat stepping but wasnt committed to being a murderer until he peaked me after passing. figured he was going to shoot so i pounced. hit me once with the green 2shot shotty. then ganked a second guy while he voiped about checking out the room i was in. not sure he was with actual friends cause the 2 guys that came next didnt even care he was dead. we tried to do some questd but they both got clawed by marauders. cant recall if i extracted on that run. think i died too.

game has some kinda draw to it. people seem to talk more than shoot.

            >there were vehicles in the alpha?
Old Cycle was a ffa mission-based br where you could squad up and solo on the fly. They kept it balanced by dropping everyone with only a pistol and suit abilities, squadding up also stripped your shields. Completing contracts gave you points and money, the cash was used to buy upgrades, new weapons, or in niche cases a hovercycle. Vehicles weren't really necessary since a fully upgraded suit could get you where you needed to go (except dragonfly, which was for pvp shitters who could only win with explosive round arbiter), but if you got fricked when the storm hit and respawned at your dropzone you weren't making evac unless you had the spare cash for a ride. Even then there was a chance you'd get left behind anyway. Fun as shit.

Played a few matches. Half with friends, half solo.
It's surprisingly pretty. Core gameplay loop is fun.
But severs are a little laggy atm.
Crafting needs a lot more items, hell I think their needs to be more content in general.
The only solid negative is that, especially in solo, because the game shows where you land in the match. You can be instantly killed the moment you start.
They need like a minor invulnerability window when you first land.

Definitely needs to be more monsters, there's just the basic b***h ones, the bug eyed ones, the ticks, the marauders, and then there's something else apparently called a crusher that I've never seen yet.
      >The only solid negative is that, especially in solo, because the game shows where you land in the match. You can be instantly killed the moment you start.
I've never seen anyone land close to me, or seen anyone shortly after landing. Actually coming across other players feels a bit too infrequent which makes me wonder if the Australian servers are just dead and it's meant to be more populated than it is. There has to be a fine line between the threat of other players and the ability to reasonably scavenge and escape but right now it feels too easy to do the latter. I haven't had a single person ever show up while upgrading data drives yet either, never even seen anyone else doing it for that matter.

Yeah. And the character customisation is a joke. There's like three outfits in the game at the moment and they're all paid. I guess most of the content is meant to come with the Fortuna Pass that isn't being added for another two weeks?

The gameloop is quite addicting and I can play it with my toaster unlike Tarkov. They need to fix the gunplay and tune down some of the mob's hp, though. Your character being a prospector is smart but the actual mining is really dull.

You can use heavy melee attack (hold left mouse button) to one shot ticks and striders. I've also learned to melee rattlers to death without taking hits.

Rattler's ranged attack has a pretty obvious charge up animation so it's easy to dodge. When it does that you can sidestep its projectiles and heavy melee it from the side. When it gets staggered you can follow up with a light attack or two, then you need to back away. Its melee attack triggers whenever you're close and it recovers from staggered animation, and it's an AOE meaning even if you're behind it you can still get hit. It takes a bit of practice, but you can just drop down naked to learn (they're mission objectives anyways)

Biggest problem I have so far is the missions because of how much fricking luck is involved.
    >Three different missions currently to deliver 24 cloudy velcite between them
    >Velcite only spawns at the waterfalls at the very top of the map
    >So you first need to spawn somewhere near that part of the map and/or have an extraction point near that part of the map
    >Then you need to actually get there without getting ganked
    >Then you need the velcite to actually be there and to not have already been mined by someone else
    >Then you need to mine the velcite without getting ganked
    >Then you need the cloudy velcite to actually drop from the ore veins instead of the three other types of velcite it could drop
    >Then you need to get the velcite back to an extraction point without getting ganked
And that's just for one item, the entire mission structure has this problem.

Game's fun, but it has fundamental problems that are going to tank it within a month, and that's excluding the inevitable hackers that will swarm it like flies on shit.
    >long ttk heavily favors numbers in every engagement
    >gear disparity further disincentivizes pvp; way more profitable to drop with nothing but a backpack and just bumrush nodes
    >matchmaking is determined by consecutive extraction profits; nothing to stop players dropping naked to foam themselves until they can join a noob mmr map with a full set of epics and only leave when they run out of ammo
    >full wipes; have fun grinding out faction ranks and room upgrades every three months
    >the devs have no fricking clue what they're doing besides shoehorning assets into a genre they were not designed for
They'll need a small miracle to prevent Frontier from going the way of it's immediate predecessor.

      Anonymous

      >>long ttk heavily favors numbers in every engagement
I don't even know about that, shit feels super inconsistent thanks to armour and weapon values, of which there is zero way for the player to identify them while playing. Which is a problem when using a shotgun because you'd think you can kill someone with two shotgun blasts to the face, but then they have too much armour so you don't, and then you get fricked while reloading because ARs seem like the best weapon in the game anyway.

      >gear disparity further disincentivizes pvp
This is the main reason I can't fully enjoy games like this, specially Tarkov. The whole idea of being some kind of scavenger looting whatever you find to make enough profit to live another day goes down the drain when you have fully geared military psychos running around with overmodded guns. I'd rather get a game where the upgrades are mainly focused on your base, stats or faction reputation rather than the items you bring to the raids.
For me, the genre should be about the rat race of some cheeki scavs fighting for literal garbage rather than the streamer friendly, squad focused pvp galore that we have. To each their own, of course.

        Anonymous

        I fully agree.
I wish the "upgrades" were more about increasing the variety of what you can bring along and other utility stuff.

I can't imagine playing double digit hours in this game, getting my ultimate weapon setup, only to lose it the next moment because I got sniped or ambushed.
The game is too much risk and barely any reward.

As someone who didn't play Tarkov, Frontier is pretty cool so far. my only real gripe is how deadly the monsters can be, specially with how tanky they are. Also the sound effects of my footsteps on the different types of ground is making me paranoid, I always feel like there are other people around because of how varied the footsteps sound can be if i stepped on a plastic bag.

      Anonymous

Yeah there's definitely something off about the footstep sounds

        Anonymous

I think the problem is that the environmental sounds for things like stepping on broken glass are generated separately to the normal footstep sounds and so when you trigger them yourself it causes the sounds to play slightly off-centre, which makes it sound like they're coming from somewhere else instead of being your own noise.

          Anonymous

I've seen several FPS games have this problem it usually results in playing the players sounds as 2d vs 3d audio. That is to say if the players own footsteps are 3d audio its gonna sound like you're walking circles around yourself.

          Anonymous

I almost didn't make it out of my first raid in time because my own footsteps made me think there was someone sneaking up on me waiting for me to get it, I was just kinda ADAD strafing and it sounded like someone walking 5m away.

            Anonymous

The footstep sounds in this game are the worst of any game I have ever played. They sound like they are coming from 5m behind you and they lag almost a full second behind your actual movements. Also your leg movements are chained to your aim so you trigger footsteps with even the slightest turn especially when standing on rocks or glass.

They're fine for general pve purposes, serviceable for pvp if you catch a sucker unawares or distracted. A single nade in your safe pocket as an opening is a major boon to the pvp fight even just in terms of mindset.

It was fun before they reworked it into a tarkov clone.

Im not big on tarkov, but tarkov does tarkov better. Cycle 2.0 feels like a tactical game where you move 1mph, but instead of a small submarine or killhouse, you're transversing a giant open world. The old map from the original, better Cycle does not fit the new Tarkov-Clone style gameplay at all. Also its buggy as shit.

It has potential but I am having a hard time playing solo because every time I die, it's because there's a team of 2 or 3.
Creature spawns are all over the fricking place, it sucks having to kill 10 monsters on crescent falls when there's nothing but marauders, other types rarely spawn and the map is full of cheaters, no reason to take expensive gear when you'll just lose it all.

They need to tackle the cheater problem somehow. The game shines in group play. The gunplay is arcadey but fun, whereas tarkov's realistic shooting is great, this game fills a different niche.
I like the faction system, focusing on the faction whose weapons you want to use, the PvE would be fun if the monster AI was consistent and their hitboxes weren't such garbage. Questing is quite fun and gives an alternative to just going to kill players.

Game needs a lot of QoL work, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Made a couple friends already from voip. Most of my quests now are on Crescent Falls now which I'm dreading. Already been there 15 times or so and ran into a hacker once that was trying to wallbang me for like 2 minutes straight before he got on voip and told me to get out of the corner. I managed to run away but still died later.

They need to adjust the spawns and the players per map by 10-20%, especially on Crescent because it feels like you can't walk 5 step without stepping on a trio.
