Well I can only say in my anecdotal opinion I saw far more of other franchises outside of /tg/ and a noticeable rise of 40k outside of /tg/ that only grew at an exponential rate starting the last 8 or so years. I'd argue 40k only got extremely popular because every Sci Fi series like Star Wars and Star Trek were completely destroyed and everyone was looking for a new universe to look into as well as Henry Cavill talking about Warhammer a lot.
Warhammer is one of the last existing "that happens because it would be cool" type settings. Most other scifi went in hard for the blomkamp type gritty realism aesthetic, warhammer is fairly comfortable in being stupid.

the worst thing I read was Dorne being transported to a sand planet by Khorne during the Horus thing, and there was a big wall he couldn't get thru. Maybe it's just because I don't frequent other sci-fi forums but the reverse problem seems to be much greater on /tg/. People seem to go out of their way to point out how things from Star Trek, Star Wars, Halo, Xeelee Sequence, Culture and so on could totally kick 40K's butt into the stratosphere. All of these threads start with the declaration that 40K is the inferior setting by far.
