I never liked these side flap things they added to Peach, so I was disappointed to see she was updated. That being said, since this is a remake of two developer's IP that being Nintendo's Mario and Square's weird ass extensions on that I don't think a mandate would even stick. You'll notice only Nintendo's IP is modernized. Characters like Geno, Mallow, random enemies, npcs, etc are exactly the same as before. Compare to Mario & Luigi where Nintendo is the sole owner of the entire thing. What people don't understand about the mandate is that it doesn't and never did apply to new mainline titles. Wonder does not end the mandate, neither did Odyssey.

Some what off topic, but one thing I'd like to know about the legal stuff in regards to Mario RPG: we all know that the entirely original characters like Geno, Mallow, Smithy, etc are fully owned by Square Enix, but what about their OCs that are from Nintendo owned species? I.E the Chancellor and female Toads, Boshi, Chained Kong/Guerilla, etc?
I did notice that Boshi was actually redesigned along with the rest of the Yoshis to conform to the modern look, though thankfully Boshi was able to keep all of his unique characteristics.

It's a minor thing but since you're talking about it; What's wrong with having variation on how they look between games and giving them a more distinct color scheme? This reminds me of how they ruined Red Bomber's colors in the Switch game, turning his hands and feet from green to pink to match everyone else.
I dont mind variation, in fact I love it when characters have designs to make them stand out. But I feel like this particular instance and other examples (e.g. shoeless paratroopa) was just a design oversight from different developers designing the game. And yoshi is treated like one of the main cast so his design (like mario, luigi, bowser, etc) should remain consistant. Give him shades a hat or whatever, but his color scheme and general design should remain consistant.

They didn't have unique designs in SMRPG beyond Bowser's face being made out of sphere primitive since it was easier for the sprite artists to touch up that way. They just used squished down versions of their modern designs at the time, which is what they're doing in the remake, too.
The lack of the high-contrast lighting is a shame, but that's less a character design thing and more an overall artstyle thing.

For people who don't know how the mandate works.
Any established Mario character cannot be off-model. The only thing that's glaring about it is Mario being chibi, but it's no more than Mario being paper in that sense where it's an attempt at a style.
You can see it more clearly by Peach's or Bowser's face being reworked to be on model. As well as the Paratroopa's in the Mushroom Pass, the wigglers, the piranha plant and Birdo during the trailer.
The good thing is that Super Mario RPG is that it barely had any actual established Mario characters. Most of the enemies are OC do not steal enemies like the Spikeys instead of Spineys.
If you want a comparison, look at how certain enemies and characters were changed in the Mario and Luigi Remake, only the characters that aren't established mario characters remained looking the same.
What this does mean is that the fat yoshi and the fat paratroopa is going to be jarring, as they will be reworked to look more on model. Since that's the only real instance of something in SMRPG that was way off model.

SMRPG feels like one of the best-paced games ever. There's nothing really that feels like "that part" to me. Not even the 6 doors.

The 6 doors are actually fine because you don't even have to attempt the 2 bad ones. The more advanced Dr. Topper stuff will keep a young kid stumped for a few tries, maybe.

The only bad part about the 6 doors is you're forced to a do a maximum of 4 and they're randomized, meaning if you want to go through all 6 of them you have to go through the ENTIRE castle all over again, and then you have to HOPE you get the course you missed.
Of course yes, you can skip the puzzle courses because the reward for those is just rock candy instead of equipment, but you don't actually get to choose which one you get to do in the first place.
I hope they do something about that. A simple solution would be letting you go back after you finish it to clear the other two, without having to leave the caslle and reset everything.
My stash of Rock Candy saved my ass in one run when I was completely depleted of Flowers and MP. Four Rock Candies later and Smithy was going through his death throes.

The details don't matter, the results did. I just call it the Mario brand homogeneity strategy. Between Wonder and how faithful the SMRPG remake is, it seems that strategy finally got enough pushback to be changed. SMRPG is even featuring the unique looking or female toads that the M&L remakes cut.
Mario's sterile atmosphere is finally being addressed. That sense of life, magic, and wonder is being revived. Whether you believed there were mandates or not, that's something any Mario fan should be happy about.
RelaxAlax called it "The Bland Era of Mario", and I think it's something a lot of long-running franchises go through at some point.
I feel like the "Era" aspect of it was really just a coalition of multiple unfortunate decisions rather than an aggressive homogenization effort. It had the same results as if it were all intentionally set up that way, though. But to break it down, we just had the NSMB sequels refusing to do anything too, well, new, or put any spin on its presentation style, a proliferation of reused, lifeless, waxy renders of the characters being slapped onto everything in marketing and licensing, and the death and destruction of Paper Mario steadily streaming out all at once.
Super Mario RPG getting a remake is noteworthy.

The chibi designs look goofy in cutscenes, but they look perfect in gameplay. Mario and Peach look good. But maybe their eyes are maybe a little too big and I like Peach's classic outfit better. Geno looks cool, and I want to squeeze the new Mallow. He looks so soft and squishy.
Bowser is the outlier. The SMRPG model is ugly and primitive as frick, but his new design just doesn't capture the same soul and personality.
I've noticed a few little changes in the designs beyond that. Like how the Koopa Troopas wear shoes now, Boshi and Croco have ankle bracelets instead of torn shoes.
I'm quite a stickler but I don't really mind the modernizations and design alterations since it seems to be 99% faithful. All of the most important things are being captured. The only thing that actually annoys me are Bowser's design being TOO modernized, and the lack of Valentina's funny boob jiggle.
