I thought the polt and storytelling were kinda dumb but at the same time, it mirrors the way the game presents lots of side quest bullshit scenarios so in a way it was true to the source. The gore and action are all right and it doesn't shy away from gross stuff which is important for the atmosphere. Built to be consoomed.

Literally every single minority character, except for the BoS Black person, is evil. It wasn't even subtle.

He's a well written character with clear flaws, but is engaging and you want to keep seeing where his ark goes next, specially with his wife who pretty much destroyed the world.

for normie show it's actually great, you just need to set your mind to borderline mouthbreather and it's a good time (I'm a lightweight and 2 beers was enough). Problem is if you care at all about prexisting lore, even accounting for all the things you can handwave off, this essentially soft reboots the West Coast to before FNV starts.

Shhh, don't tell them, they need Creedfurhomosexual to make another 12 hour video having a meltdown on why it's not Morrowind or NV

Its not super preachy, for an Amazon original, but it does that thing where only women and PoCs are allowed to be heroic and cool. Every white male is either evil, stupid or incompetent.

It's ;literally the opposite. All the minorities leaders are evil. You can even argue that Maximus is neutral evil. The Vault 4 overseer is white and reasonably kind

There's no cool or good PoC in this series. Maximus is a butt monkey who viewers despise and the Ghoul's wife is pure evil. I don't think there's a single "good" character other than Lucy and that one Vault.

          Anonymous

          I noticed this too
          Maximus
Effectively murders his knight, steals his armor, effectively sentences his squire buddy to being a ghoul even after the squire proved he was a decent guy, was happy to let a whole vault die just so he could keep larping as a knight
          Moldavar
Kills a ton of innocent vault dwellers just to kidnap Agent Cooper, even very nearly causes the death of the children of her lesbian ghoul gf. Also she's like a feared presence in the wasteland so obviously shes done some other heinous shit.
          Shane's Wife
Causes the apocalypse because it'll make her stocks moon or some bullshit, she also totally gaslit Shane about him going to war while she had to stay home and check the mail so frick her
          Vault Overseer
Is a Vault Tec plant, ironically despite being presented as the show's least ambiguous villain she doesn't do anything THAT bad except cover up all the Vault Tec shenanigans

I'm not gonna subject myself to this garbage but I have a question for those who watched the show. Did they even show a single super mutant in any of the eight episodes? You know the elevated humans that can survive the wasteland way better than humans can and populated LA? Are master's remnants another faction people have forgotten about that Todd killed?

Yes? Ghouls literally heal through radiation in the game and there are numerous examples of ghouls detecting people, running and being strong as shit in the games too

        Anonymous

Ghouls were always low key immortal. Surviving hundreds of years with crazy wounds.

This has always been the case, a lot of veteran ncr rangers are ghouls precisely because they are better at surviving in the wasteland compared to smoothskins.

These people did not watch the show.

Ghouls literally have passive HP Regen and are so fast they basically zerg rush you in the FO games.

This person thinks "regenerates health slowly when exposed to radiation" means "horrifically mangled limbs knit themselves together in seconds" and "being shot repeatedly and punched through multiple buildings is easily shrugged off".

I'd say yes, they're introduced as Vault Girl > BoS Boy > Ghoul in the first episode, but pretty quickly their paths intertwine. You get a ton of extra time with Goggin's character (ghoul) in the form of pre-war screentime, and he also takes up plenty of screentime in the post-apoc time of the show. So, while Lucy might be the primary protagonist, it's not like Goggins is taking second fiddle compared to her, but he is the secondary MC. I think with his popularity and reception, coupled by where the story is going into second season, he'll probably get even more of a focus.

No it's definitely Lucy. She fits the same mold of being a vault dweller searching for a family member that the Bethesda Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 protagonists were made from.

No Lucy is the main character, but the Ghoul is a close secondary protagonist. He arguably ties into the overarching plot better than her and the nature of his condition means he is guaranteed to return in future seasons.

She's the de facto vault dweller that are usually the protagonist of the entries. But the show writers know enough to have multiple protagonists as Lucy's arc can't reasonably fill the run time. Lucy is the naive main character, Cooper is the looking glass into the pre-war era and the cabal's plans, Maximus is there I guess, and Norm is the int/stealth character who uncovers the truth by being the loregay

There's already been multiple different dogs in the Fallout games all named Dogmeat. It's a reference to A Boy and His Dog, which is one of the original inspirations for Fallout. He's absolutely an idiot and I really believe the audience is meant to think so, even non-Fallout fans. Take his "you mean use my wiener?" scene for instance. He's clearly a gullible moron because he believes that it'll get big and explode and that would be bad. Meanwhile, there's a Brotherhood guy shown jerking off in his cot right near Maximus in one of the first few scenes at their base.

Maximus gets dunked on by The Ghoul because he doesn't know how to use power armor at all. Then later, Thaddeus, the other initiate who is shown not to be super bright either, easily gets around Maximus and immobilizes his armor in an instant.

He also doesn't know his history well because when Lucy talks about the Great War and asks about history he just goes, "Uh, the bombs fell when I was a kid," and assumes she has no idea what she's talking about. When, again, all throughout the rest of the show and in other Fallout lore we have tons of characters referencing "the Great War" all the time, so it should be obvious that when Lucy mentions the bombs falling, she means the ones 200 years ago. But all Maximus can think of his childhood experience because he was there for that and probably hasn't read a book or listened to anyone talk about history in his life.

Genuine question: why the frick was there a Brotherhood of Steel knight conveniently walking by when Maximus emerged from the fridge that he hid in to survive the bombing of Shady Sands? Like why was the Brotherhood there?

The West Coast Brotherhood seemingly has somewhat limited resources, unless there's hundreds of knights aboard the Prydwyn, so what was a knight doing scrounging around the smoldering remains of Shady Sands? How long was Maximus in that fricking fridge for, anyway?

      gee i dunno

I have genuinely begun to believe the theory that the 3* (4, counting Norm) main characters are supposed to represent how players play the game. Maximus is genuinely just a 1 INT, 1 CHA, 10 END based moron player character who wanted to equip the cool armor on the box so badly that he'll lie, steal, kill to get it.

He is so, so, so poorly written that this is the only explanation that's believable. It's hilarious. Meanwhile Goggins is your typical 10 AGI, 10 LCK VATS abuser who has played the game for 200 years.

    >cowboy ghoul named The Ghoul
    >is like a zombie that's buried underground

    wtf is this?

      Anonymous

He's like Clint Eastwood's "the man with no name". He's a wandering bounty-hunter that no one really knows anything about, so they just call him "the ghoul". There are tons of other ghouls in the show, all of whom are in various states of lore-accurate ferality and disgustingness. The cowboy guy is buried at the beginning because he's being held prisoner by some guy, supposedly to harvest his body parts occasionally.

        Anonymous

I think the idea was that the guy imprisoning him only brought him out when needed/to lord over him, was less harvesting parts of him for any use, but moreso to say "look, I own you, and you aren't even human, so I'll peel off bits of you to remind you of that fact."

          Anonymous

Yeah, that was also more what I was thinking too, although I couldn't remember if that was outright said or just implied. I only remembered the guys that wake up the ghoul mentioning the body parts thing.

How did the grave robbers who dug him up know about his pre-war past anyways?

One of them says his dad worked with the ghoul for a job. Most likely, his dad heard him say he was from California at some point. That, or it was just one of the rumors floating around about him. Pretty much the only thing that guy "knew" was that he was from California.

Maybe Moldaver used his wife's pip boy to get in, and Hank thought that his wife somehow survived. Also maybe they did this little ritual at scheduled times, so he would've had to open the door or risk exposing the ignorant Vault 33 people to what happened in Vault 32. The real question is why the frick didn't he immediately realize Moldaver? I guess it's possible he didn't meet her when he went to get his wife back. But then why didn't Moldaver show the Vault 33 people the very old Vault 32 bodies? Why did Moldaver allow Lucy to get attacked? There's an implied relationship between Lucy's mom and Moldaver, but even if there wasn't Moldaver clearly respected Lucy's mom and knew Lucy was innocent.

People keep calling her a communist as a meme, but she literally says in the show

      >I'm not a communist, Mr. Howard. That's just a dirty word they call people that aren't insane.
And the "they" she's referring to are a room full of people we later see literally plotting, explicitly and out loud, to drop a nuke and trigger the end AND discussing how they can run human experiments in the vaults. One suggestion from the REPCONN representative being how they could try "separating children from their parents to select the most independent and resilient ones". So yes, insane.

She's a scientist that worked for multiple different for-profit companies that Vault-Tec bought out. She mostly is just mad that they shelved her work, not that she wanted to give it away for free or anything. She then is shown to be in alliance with the NCR after getting un-frozen or whatever, the corrupt neoliberal government we know and love.

She's a crazy mad scientist and self-admitted murderous hypocrite, but they weren't framing her as an actual communist or anything.

I wish they had shown more mutants and weapons (especially the laser and plasma ones). the Gulper design was actually cool but the Yao Gui was disappointing. I wanted to see a two headed Brahmin caravan, a Radscorp and a Deathclaw. the characters arent really all that likeable. the comedy is actually pretty good. Its enough to get a chuckle here and there but nothing gut busting. its kinda got that OG Borderlands type of comedy where stupid shit happens but because everyone is some small flavor of sociopath everybody reacts in a non-chalant manner to some things happening whilst everyone reckons theyre invincible bleedin action men.
I hope by the time there is a season 2 the protag has grown into more of a badass (leveled up) and is now using all sort of techniques, weapons and gadgets she's found. Stealthboys, Bottlecap Mines, Power Fist and those powersaw knives. canned foods and bloatfly meat or something. In game wise she should be at that point where most threats are now trivial to her and she is wise to ways of the wasteland and not a gullible do gooder.

It's a solid, solid 5.5-6/10. The ghoul and the main girl are competently written. There's also some decently written and entertaining side characters. There's some great intrigue here and there. But it has serious issues. It alters the lore incredibly heavily, which makes some things nonsensical. There were a couple changes they made that I liked, though. One character, Moldaver, is incredibly poorly written/presented. The plot to get Lucy out of the vault feels very contrived and there were definitely cleaner ways to do it. Despite mutants being mostly accepted by the NCR if they behave, we don't see any in the show (though this is almost certainly done because of the lack of budget). Some of the action is great, and some of it looks really clumsy and bad.

Overall, despite its heavy flaws, I did get the feeling that the director behind the show genuinely does care about the IP. Sure it's primarily Fallout 3 and 4, but he at least cares. It's a stark contrast to the Halo show, where seemingly everyone involved didn't give a shit about the Halo franchise. Even if something is bad or flawed, if it's made with genuine care, that appreciation shines through.

One theory I've seen is that the NCR capital moved at some point, and that the bulk of the NCR exists somewhere else, but with a severely reduced strength so that everyone is bailing or trying to set up a competing "real" NCR.

It leans on the idea that 2277 is when Shady Sands "fell" but that the bomb fell several years later after New Vegas takes place. So perhaps Shady Sands went into a decline that eventually led to losing its status as the capital, and this culminated in Hank exploiting their time of weakness to drop a bomb and no one could stop him because other shit was going down. We have a scene where some random sheriff guy that Cooper/Ghoul knows calls himself "the president of the NCR" while seemingly only having two poorly trained goons as muscle. At the same time, Moldaver is running the group at the observatory with way more people and guns that are clearly NCR as well. When Cooper/Ghoul asks about the guy being president, he simply responds, "Well, why not?" indicating at least some people still consider the NCR to be "the government" but that there's some serious power vacuum going on.

To me, that looks like a post-Rome type scenario where everyone set up rival fiefdoms claiming to be the true inheritor of the empire's legacy. Some big, some small.

Just watched the first episode so I don't know if it's going to get a lot worse like Ganker is saying - seems okay so far if kinda average. But the one thing I did find strange is how Vault 32 and 33 were connected. At first I thought 33 walked through the wasteland to get to 32, but that didn't make sense since the Overseer said they haven't been on the surface yet. Apparently the vaults were neighbours and they could freely travel to each other?

I've played FO3, NV, FO4, and FO76 and don't recall a single case of two vaults being directly connected. If this is a retcon it makes no sense why vaults tec wouldn't build more vaults like this to promote mini societies instead of making them all separated and isolated.

I think Maximus is running a low Intelligence/charisma build with all his points dumped into luck with a few into strength and agility. He gets his ass pulled from the fire multiple times. I'm surprised the mysterious stranger didn't show up and help him during the show.

That would explain why he's bad at communicating and keeps doing dumb shit all the time yet always manages to eke out a win despite bumbling his way through bad situation after bad situation. He gets cold-wienered by a dude in power armor and somehow his head doesn't explode. If that's not lucky, I don't know what is.

          Anonymous

No, Cooper is more akin to Raul Tejada. A dude larping as a cowboy in the post-apocalypse. The one thing I want to see is him break character during an actual dramatic segment and become his old self. Let there be some catharsis in him finding out what happened to his wife or uncovering whatever his secret arc is, "I can finally put the ghoul to rest" or whatever .

            Anonymous

Technically Raul is the inverse because he's LARPing as a literal who mechanic before you convince him to embrace his past. God, I love New Vegas's companions.

Raul went on a bunch of adventures with me in the Mojave. He was a based beaner and put up with my shit despite me dragging him to Deathclaw pits and the Hoover Dam. I felt kinda bad since he was so old but he was too cool not to have around.
              >"You got it boss."
Maybe Cooper will have his own transition to an elderly laid-back ghoul like Raul did. Raul is the best follower for sure, 2nd best would be a tie between Boone and Rex. Everyone else was okay, but Boon, Rex, and Raul were my besties.

Yeah, I noticed that they left every single intrigue in S1 intentionally open. Did Vault-Tec drop the bombs? We don't know, Amazon could decide they didn't in season 2. Was House receptive to their plan? We don't know, Amazon can decide if he is or isn't in season 2. Does the NCR persist elsewhere in the wasteland? We don't know, Amazon can decide if they do or don't in season 2. Notice how the Shady Sands billboard says that it's the "first" capital of the NCR? They hedged their bets with every single plot point.

Playing devil's advocate; He expressed his didsatisfaction via corpospeak at meeting because he knew he'd be assassinated had he openly called them out.

This is my issue with retcons, personally. Even if you're simply trying to make sense of the show's versions of events, you can see how easily we slip into
            >Maybe this is what...
            >But it doesn't contradict...
            >Well, it would make sense if...
For example, you can claim that there's nothing wrong with House having foreknowledge of the bomb being dropped by Vault-Tec (IF they dropped it, you see how open-ended this is) because it's in-character for him to fictionalize an insider advantage as a "genius calculation". Remember that this is the Robert House who publicly broadcasts his own eulogy about how GOATed with the sauce he is if you kill him. (Never mind that House logically had insider information to calculate the bombs being dropped to begin with.)
The issue is that "canon" is a trap that distracts you from the fact that things are or aren't fundamentally fricking moronic, as the Vault-Tec scene is. If you can somehow mash the puzzle piece into place so it's canon, people forget how badly it fits to begin with.

Unfinished vaults are part of the plan. It was explained in previous fallouts that Vault Tec either didnt intend to finish all vaults or making them unfinished or unstable was part of the plan. Could it be that the nukes went off earlier than planned? Absolutely. Could it be because of something other than Vault Tec? Unlikely.

There's an unfinished vault in FO4 that was hosting interviews for researchers just as the bombs dropped. Not convinced they'd waste manpower like that. Unstable vaults as part of the experiments sure, but those experiments would be for nothing if there was no communication between vaults and that wasn't yet finished.

This line is noncommittal, but doesn't disapprove of the idea either, even in corpo-speak. It's purpose is to get Vault-Tec to divulge more information, which they immediately do.

It's equally as likely that "It's a fun idea" is an Amazon writer's way of saying

This. Everything the writers put out for this show is so noncommittal it hurts. Every twist and turn is meant to be just vague enough to drive speculation and let complainers get hushed out by people's cope headcanon.

"No see they said it was the NCR's FIRST capital, maybe there's more elsewhere who just aren't doing anything to help the people in the remains of their country's heartland"
"No see Robert House looked vaguely skeptical when he was talking about ending human civilization, maybe he's actually against it and is just playing along"
"No see they never SAY all ghouls have to take Radaway or go feral, maybe it's just Cooper and Roger who needed it"
"No see Maximus THINKS Thad is a ghoul when he regenerates from life-threatening injury instantly, maybe Max is just being a moron again and Thad actually just used a Healing Factor Serum from the hit game Fallout 76"

            It's all so tiresome.

Why does Bethesda put so many vaults in whatever iteration of Fallout they work on?
      Fallout 3 has: 77(mentioned only), 87, 92, 101, 106, 108, 112.

      Fallout 4 has: 75, 81, 88(DLC-Only), 95, 111, 114, 118(DLC-Only)

      Fallout 76 has: 51, 63, 76, 79, 94, 96, along with four "Mentioned-Only" from conversations.
