Have you tried running it with DGVoodoo?

      I haven’t heard of DGVoodoo
What I ultimately want is to be able to play this with a controller and not have the camera freak out on me. I’m not convinced this is possible but if it emulates well then I’ll try that

DGVoodoo is basically an API wrapper that tricks the program into thinking you have the correct graphics card. It allows you to run classic windows games at any resolution and even in true widescreen. It’s the miracle that saved Win95/98 gaming.

I looked it up and it does work with Rogue Squadron 3D.

Interesting, thanks - strange that video is 4 years old and yet the internet still generally regards the pc port as unsalvageable.
That said the process looks cuddly so hopefully I can do it properly

            Fiddly, not cuddly. Frick
Also hope it works with controller. I’ll try it when I get home

Consoletards tend to exagerate a lot about PC ports despite the fact lots of games are fixable

Always keep DGvoodoo on hand any time you wanna download Win95/98 games.

I tried it out on mupen64plus-next with parallel. It’s possible that it runs perfect, I just need to adjust to N64’s shitty framerate.

For the pc port, if I’m understanding it right, rogue squadron also needs RTSS in addition to dgvoodoo, to deal with that known camera issue. RTSS seems like a program you have to manually open up each time you want to play the game. I was hoping to be able to boot from big picture without having to deal with windows

Really sucks that the Rogue Squadron 2 is one of the worst emulated games on the GC on top of not having any other ports or anything. I own it on GC but I don't have the room to dig it out right now and I've really wanted to play it a bit last year, but booting it up in Dolphin it crashes constantly and is basically unplayable.

Factor 5 got one of the rawest deals in the industry. Literally technokraut wizards who could do the impossible (RE2 with no compromises on a cart, bump mapping at 60fps on a launch title in the case of RS2), then Sony says “make your cool dragon game but force people to use motion controls on our 600 dollar stinker. You also have to rush it out the door because our stinker is stinking really bad.
      Fricking Lair.

There used to be a fork of dolphin or settings you can use to play it better on PC. Factor 5 used every trick in the book to push their games on ‘cube to the limit which is why both RS N64 and RS 2 have always been notoriously difficult to emulate.

It’s actually better to play RS2/3 on a Wii. The Wii is an overclocked GameCube essentially so you’ll get less slowdown during those big explosions.

plus, Factor 5 are ready and willing to re-release these games. It's devastating

I have a softmodded Wii - should I look into HDMI mods for it?

Unless you have a crt then yeah. Research what the best hdmi adapter is.
RS is 480p native iirc but you can also force it on most games on a soft modded Wii.
Best way to do GameCube on a flat panel is with a Wii U, but those have jumped in price.

Emulate it on Retroarch Mupen64plus with parallel plugin. It runs flawlessly.

I've literally never had a problem with the steam version, ever.

Same. I got all gold in the Steam version. The only thing that sucks is that stupid acceleration bug that was never fixed unless you play it in wienerpit mode.

I recall it not controlling as well in wienerpit mode.
Didn’t you experience the camera bug in the steam version? What did you control with?

its a shame thats the rep this game has nowadays because of fricking steam

it ran really good on my PC back in the day. looked spectacular. sound design in this game was excellent too
my dad had a sidewinder force feedback stick (for microsoft WWII combat flight sim) and this game and podracer were fricking INTENSE to play with that

I had (and still have) the force feedback pro with both rogue squadron and podracer. Great times.

Is the PC version still a mess?

Last I tried rogue squadron on Steam, it was unplayable because my joystick was being treated like a controller and had a ~20% dead zone. I just tried it again and it now seems to be working fine. Who knows. It still has the bug where the camera continually gets farther away in 3rd person view. But that was present in the original version and swapping views fixes it.

The steam version runs identical to the GoG version, you schizo. It runs fine

A "bad" PC port is almost always still way better than the console version. This is a good example. I played it on WinXP on my 3rd gen i7 machine. Standard HID Joystick worked for me back in the day.

ok I'm having some success here
dgVoodoo seems to be working in terms of improving resolution etc
My 360 controller gets recognised, and has reasonably intuitive controls, but they're not comprehensive, eg if i want to pause i still need to hit esc on the keyboard.
Is there a solution to have this work entirely by controller?
If so then this is quite close to perfect

    Some other issues i'm noticing
    >the game still seems stretched despite setting to a 16:9 aspect ratio in dgvoodoo
    >when you launch the game it actually launches the launcher, which you can't seem to operate with a controller even when using the chord feature
    >the youtube video posted earlier mentions running RTSS in parallel to solve the camera issue. Can is somehow set RTSS to boot when booting Rogue Squadron? I'm vaguely aware of certain commands and .bat files but not sure how to use them
