Sure, but that's just ONE of many problems.
If I had to name a single most damning issue it'd be this:
    >Lack of inspiration/cohesive vision/artistic integrity across the board that affects literally everything
I believe games are art, but it is extremely hard to call Gens 6, 8 and 9 "art" to any degree. Regardless of how much you like them or not (I don't like Gen 7 at all), there is clearly an organised team working on all the other gens that aren't 6, 8 and 9. These specific gens have no distinct flavour, no real vision, and it's why there are no non-shills that give a frick about them as artistic works. They're just a bunch of random ideas thought up to keep the paycheck going and to meet the bare minimum of a released product. You can't have such a good game with such loose directorial standards and 20 team members in various aspects of the game all doing their own thing. Look at the fricking dexes in recent gens, they're comprised of Pokémon that look like they don't even belong in the same game series they were released in.

        >I don't like Gen 7 at all
Way to not read the entire post. His point wasn't that Gen 7 was good, it was that Gen 6 and 8-9 don't have a cohesive vision. Gen 7 does have a cohesive vision, even if it's shit.

please explain how gen 6 is any less “art” than gen 4, I want to see your genius thoughts

What's the overarching theme of X&Y? Gen 4 had a theme about comparing the best to the worst of humanity, and seeing what happens when you see only the worst.
I know that's a stretch but its also been years and I haven't finished Gen 4 yet.

XY has more side content than gen 5 yet people still cry about it being unfinished so apparently not

Really? I couldn't find most of this supposed side content in XY then.

          > What's the overarching theme of X&Y?
How dreams change as you get older and more experienced. Lysandre became the way he is because he was so obsessed with with his dream of making the world beautiful and couldn’t find compromise. Diantha and Sycamore emphasize living each individual day to the fullest rather than being obsessed with a single thing. Xerneas and Yvelt’s natural cycle of life and death illustrate that nothing should last forever. AZ learned the same lesson after he lost his Floette from being so obsessed with his hatred, and suffered for thousands of years as a result, until he moved on after battling the player character at the end of the game.

          > I couldn't find most of this supposed side content in XY then
You couldn’t find the berry farming?
          Or all the clothes shops?
          Or the roller skating tricks?
          Or the different battle restaurants?
          Or the different cafes?
Or the different guests in the hotels?
          Or the hotel employment?
Or the museum which gives you a bunch of lore about the region?
          Or the inverse battles?
          Or the battle chateau?
          Or the battle institute?
          Or the fish chaining?
          Or the super training?
Or the three different amie minigames?

Damn bro I’m sorry you’re completely braindead. Maybe you should try playing the game properly before attempting to criticize it.

The key here is that almost all of the side content in XY (much like BW) has an extremely weak sense of progression. Contests had a progression system and their own set of mechanics, The Battle Frontier gave you empty symbol slots on your trainer card passport thing which showed clearly "there's still more to do you should work on these and fill the gaps", secret bases didn't have progression but there were still uncommon events to get certain pieces of furniture and a sense of perfecting you base. All of the side content you mentioned is side content, but its all extremely fleeting or shallow compared to what came before (much like musicals, pokestar studios, etc. in BW), obviously it seems like a ton of side content by modern standards where we get actually none, but its not really meaningful stuff to keep you playing over and over for the sake of the side content specifically.

I think people got the illusion that BW has postgame just because it has the shitty postgame routes with nothing to do in them.

              >Contests had a progression system and their own set of mechanics
              so does super training
              and restaurant battles
              and the amie minigames
hell, even unlocking all the clothes require you to get style points from doing various things throughout the game, and getting the last roller skate trick requires you to unlock all the other tricks first

              >The Battle Frontier gave you empty symbol slots on your trainer card passport thing which showed clearly "there's still more to do you should work on these and fill the gaps",
you mean like how the battle maison has those empty trophy slots that don't fill until you beat the super modes of each format?

you're gonna need a better argument, so far you're just making it blatantly obvious your only standard is "thing I grew up with is good and thing I didn't grow up with is bad" just like every other moron in this thread who's claiming the 3D games are lifeless while giving zero references

yeah I loved that part in gen 6 when psyduck was blocking the way and professor oak came after I beat the game to talk to me about the legendary birds

Gen 4 is also very much a kanto pandering generation after many old fans felt alienated by gen 3. But the key difference is that Gen 4 actually does have an identity with its piano music, wintery imagery, and its legendaries being these over the top god beings. The entire game has this vague sense of like, visiting some ancient historic sites in the early winter as the atmosphere for it I would say.
Gen 6 doesn't, it replaces your starters more right away with Kanto ones that are better because of megas, it does not have its own smaller scale legendary trio and uses the birds instead (not that you NEED a trio like this we have more than enough legendaries already), and it's actual cover legendaries are completely absent from the plot and their themes and abilities take a backseat. XY's identity as a pokemon game is basically completely overshadowed by Mega evolution, which (until ORAS) was overwhelmingly generation 1 pokemon.
XY's pokemon distribution being a random hodgepodge of everything from the entire series, and it having a bunch of designated biomes without good connecting tissue (is it a cold region? a hot one? its just everything its like a fricking mario game with themed worlds) also contribute heavily from draining Kalos and the games of a distinct identity, but these are issues that have plagued every game that has released since XY as well, so I dont want to single XY out on these ones specifically.

what, are you going to cite the Shaymin event?

I'm going to cite all the cross-gen evolutions, which make up a huge portion of the dex, and the examples the guy I replied to mentioned. It's not nearly as pandering as Kalos is, and as I said the entire thing has its own identity despite that, it might be better to say that gen 3 was specifically an outlier more than anything.

That's the biggest reason for me at least. I didn't even hate gen 5 but stopped playing it pretty quickly and it didnt leave as much of an impression on me outside of music because it took out stuff like contests and secret bases.
Definitely feels like they're designing new pokemon games to be something players can finish in a year and then wait for the next one to come out, rather than something someone can play for years afterwards.

    >that makes the world feel lived in?
This is my biggest complaint with the modern games. Despite being 3D and having so many more tools at their disposal the world feels infinitely more lifeless and sterile than a bunch of pngs and grass tiles.

Lack of unified art direction and "toyification" of pokemon designs.

      Anonymous

I think I know what you mean by toyification, like the big heads and stuff. However part of the reason designs in earlier gens were kept simple was to make physical toy production easier.

        Anonymous

It's not just that. It's that Pokémon used to be designed with 2D in mind first (think goku's hair), while now, they are first designed using 3D shapes so they are easier to create and replicate as plushes and toys.

It's a big part of the problem, however I would add terrible decisions on how to handle online battles and lack of quality are bigger issues as of now
