Diablo + Hellfire on DevilutionX is the best way to play solo.
If you've already played the PC version, I don't see why not play the PS1 version. It is however one of those games I personally find a CRT TV to be obligatory. Even a CRT shader doesn't do it justice.
Other than that, it's no more of a downgrade than any other PC game released on PS1. Same with DarkStone.
I haven't played the PC version yet. I don't have access to one at the moment so I was wondering if I should play the ps1 version now or wait till later when I could play the PC version.
The game uses very detailed SVGA graphics which do not look good when the resolution is cut in half on the Playstation. It becomes something of a pixelated mess. Cool way to play Diablo if you didn't have a gaming PC or Windows 95. But that's not really relevant now.
It's fun, but, magic is more or less unusable aside from a couple of spells like healing, town portal, etc. So you can really only play warrior or rogue unless you want to pull your hair out with wizard. Why? I'll explain.
For starters, the actual screen size on PS1 is way smaller than on PC, so enemies appear at the edge of the screen at a much closer range than PC. So this inherently makes ranged weapons much weaker in general.
But the real problem is the targeting system. Unlike PC, where you simply put your cursor over the spell you want, then click on your target, on PS1 you have to first press the spell button. Using the L1 and R1 buttons, you then toggle over to the spell you want, then press the spell button again. Then you press triangle, which activates the magic cursor, and moves automatically (somewhat slowly) to the nearest enemy. If you don't want to shoot that enemy, you have to press either R2 or L2 (someone correct me here) to toggle between enemies based on proximity. AND, if you use the control stick/d-pad, it overrides the auto-cursor and changes it to manual, which means that if you want to use magic, you can't move.
I didn't know you were supposed to manually level up. Fricking lol. I was getting recked by that skeleton king, so I completely loaded up on heal potions and just mashed attack/heal forever until he died. Used up all my potions too.
That sweet 5 blocks on the memory card... Don't remember if it is actually good, but sure it brings up nostalgia when i was used to play it with my neighbor.
Yes it's worth it for couch co-coop. If you're playing solo stick to PC

unless you are still using your computer from 1995 i don't think you will have much trouble running diablo 1.
It's the only version I've played. It's rough but if you don't want to sit at a desk or use a mouse and keyboard, it's good for chilling on the couch.
worse graphics but controller support
It's the only version I've played.
Saving the game takes forever, but controller support makes these games actually fun.
I played D2 with a mouse and it's literally my favorite game but I couldn't play that game again. I'd have to play the remake on PS4
HOW IS NO ONE GOING TO MENTION
THAT IT TAKES UP A WHOLE MEMORY CARD
because people are either using some super multi chinkshit memory card, or an emulator
yeah that is wack as hell though
I genuinely wonder why that was.
Uniquely seeded world with lots of values to track, not much space on a Playstation card.
If you get a Memcard Pro you never have to worry about memory cards again.
Pretty fun on a PSP.

Its fantastic anon, its just very expensive.
All it costs is bandwidth to download
PC version is just a tech demo, the console version improved in just about every way.

The audio books of the lore in the title screen are a nice addition. Even worth just chilling out on the couch and listening to those alone.
