true, liked katana as a teenager, ran with some in Morrowind and Oblivion etc, then hated katanas in early 20's, but mostly because being exposed to the fedoratipping *teleports behind you* types, now being free of social judgements it is kinda cool again. Sleek looking and with a high "cool" factor. (on the other hand every person who talks about european style medieval weponry looks like a a ugly hobo in a historical outfit)

Quite the contrary. Katanas are way heavier than a normal longsword. The average katana weights around 5 kilos, a longsword 2-3. They are also longer than the average longsword, with their handle being up to one fourth their length. Not ti mention their two handed version

Actually, no. They are usually shorter than the average longsword. Which is an arbitrary comparison anyway; they are far shorter than the rapier. See I can do it too!

      Anonymous

given that the japs were barely topping 5 feet tall in the edo period, they were quite long for the time. and they're built to excel and cutting soft flesh, which is what most samurai ended up doing with them, just chopping down rebellious farmers who had no armor

that is, when they weren't getting their platoons of spearmen or bowmen to just shank them/riddle them with arrows

      No.

Katanas are bad because they're heavy and thick as dicks. Thick sword = you need to move more armor/flesh out of the way to cut through it = worse cutting performance.

Quite the contrary. Katanas are way heavier than a normal longsword. The average katana weights around 5 kilos, a longsword 2-3. They are also longer than the average longsword, with their handle being up to one fourth their length. Not ti mention their two handed version

People idolize old cars (Ferrari 250 LM / Mercedes-Benz 300 SL) and weapons (Colt 1849 Revolver / 44. Smith & Wesson) even though newer models are objectively better. The katana doesn't have to be the best sword to be appreciated, like how people pay 20m+ for a car that could be outpaced by a civic.

New cars have spyware, are subsceptible to hackers and have fricking pay to win purchases. Not kidding. There are cars where you need to pay a monthly subscription to unlock features already built into the car.

          Santa Claus

To be fair, this is actually reflected in the game.
The Katana has hald the durability of a baseball bat, much less than a crowbar or axe and can't be repaired unlike most other weapons.

        Santa Claus

I think a (twohanded) Crowbar should hit harder than a fricking Katana. The crowbar has a lot more mass and more of the mass is towards the striking end meaning it will hit harder.

And while I get that the sledgehammer is too heavy, it should at least do more raw damage than a katana. It's 3 times heavier and all the mass is in the head as opposed to the handle.

Think of it like it's one of those 2k katanas that can cut through stuff super easy.
My problem with katanas is video games is that anyone can pick one up and instantly knows how to use it. The katana takes alot of skill to use otherwise it's pretty shit weapon. Unlike a sledge hammer or crowbar were as long as you have the muscle for it you can use it.

It would take more skill than something like a hammer or baseball bat. Blades need proper edge alignment in order to cut through hard objects properly

You aren't cutting through armor with a sword, you're cutting cloth and flesh, bone is about as difficult as it gets and that's not actually what you're aiming for with a sword.

                >that's not actually what you're aiming for with a sword
True, you'd probably be aiming for joints or the neck against zombies, which would be difficult to cut without proper edge alignment. A mace would just smash it.

It hits hard, but a slash has more leg if there is no modern medicine avaiable. Very easy to get infected and closing it up would be a nightmare. So if its a battle of attrition between groups, slashing or thrusting weapons are better while if you are by yourself, the blunt weapons are very much better.

            Santa Claus

Broken bones are quite hard to threat. I tgink that infections can be warded off by sticking a hot iron into the wound. Threating a fractre is far more difficult than sewing a wound and the bones won't grow together properly if you don't get proffesional threatment, crippeling you for life.
You also have to take helmets, bullet proof vests and the sturdy army jackets (50% scratch resistance) into consideration. Even if they can't stop the blade, they will likely damage it.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:
(One-Handed Exotic Weapon) 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon) 2d10 Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?
tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

The REAL answer is that swords are cuckold weapons that don't deserve their misplaced popularity.

Across all civilizations, the SPEAR and it's variations have been superior, while swords have been relegated to ceremonial purposes and idiots who fell of their horses, usually both.
