yes, probably within a year
I'm gonna buy 2 switches tomorrow to help break the record
yes, and snoy will never get the record back
also nintendo is on track to beat frozen 2 to become the highest grossing animated film, not counting the lion king live action remake
disney must be furious that nintendo is eating their cartoon and theme park business

be sure to tell everyone to go see the mario film 2x
I think Nintendo want to keep the switch going until it does at this point. Switch is at what, 125 million? Maybe even 130+ with Zelda coming out. Needs another 31 million to become the best selling videogame system of all time? I can see that happening in 2 years.
A big new Mario for Christmas this year. If they actually slash the price of the switch by like $50 it could sell even more. And they've already got 3 confirmed titles for 2024 so it's continuing next year certainly.
It needs to sell another 20-30 million units, so that's another 2-3 years minimum. If they release another updated model or they cut the price, it could reach that figure even sooner.
Nobody cared that DS sold 150 million though, nobody compared it to the PS2 while it was still in production, the original game boy sold more than the PS1 and nobody cared like the modern tendies. you think it will somehow be a victory over Sony but it won't
The Switch is a console, so yeah, it would be a win if it outsells PS2.

Subtract those Switch lite sales and maybe you have an argument, a hybrid is not a dedicated home console, it's different, on Wikipedia it's in a different category

Well the rest of the world calls it a console, sorry man.

It is a console, a hybrid And Switch Lite is portable, so you have a ways to go to match PS2

said, after the failure of the Wii U snoys kept saying Nintendo would go third-party and release their games on the PS. Sony was supposed to win!
Possibly.
The PS2 sold so much due to it's relatively long life and poor competition (gamecube/fatbox) and having a bit of every genre.
The switch is selling so much because of it's relatively long life and poor competition and has a bit of every genre.
Wii couldn't match PS2 because of competition being much stronger and being fairly niche in what games it provided.
>I..it's a handheld
Highest selling handheld still didn't sell more than the PS2.
That is not to be denied.
it playing DVD's massively boosted it's initial sales. >buy a PS2 for $400 that can play DVDs and videogames >Buy a DVD player for $500 that can only play DVDs
it was a no brainer.
Much more people play videogames since the PS2 ended production and part of that is likely to people who didn't play videogames buying a PS2 and getting into it, or their kids getting into it.
Have you ever seen the sales life of the PS2? It's Literally insane.
The first 6 years it only sold 80 million but then it's next 6 years (while the PS3 was out) it sold ANOTHER 80 Million.
It's like some shit like half of south America bought one cus they started getting cheaper there while everyone else in white nations was moving onto 360 and PS3
>The PS2 sold so much due to it's relatively long life and poor competition (gamecube/fatbox) and having a bit of every genre.
nah, it's because it doubled as a dvd player
dedicated dvd players cost a fair bit back then
I really don't expect Nintendo to have big enough heavy hitters for the sunsetting Switch though.
If it does outsell PS2 it'll crawl over the line. They're definitely going to put all their new big shit on the next hardware. 2024 has a peach game and Luigi's mansion 2. How exactly are they going to hit 15,000,000+ next year?
Is it close?
Currently around 130 million. PS2 at 154 million.

should I care?
As a PC gamer, I hope Switch lasts for 13 years. I just can't stop emoolating!
Very likely
If Nintendo doubles down on ASTC decoding it has the potential to kill Switch emulation
Its possible, but it'd need a price drop or new model first, most likely.
It's likely

It was already over 125 last sales report which was a while ago. With Zelda it’s most likely we’ll above 130 at this point, probably around 135m
125 since last Q report and they were expecting 15m for the fiscal year, they can met it for sure so we should expect 137m+ for March 2024.
It needs to sell another 20-30 million units, so that's another 2-3 years minimum. If they release another updated model or they cut the price, it could reach that figure even sooner.
Why does it matter? It's not like it has nearly as many original games
Becoming the greatest selling videogame system of all times a pretty big fricking deal. What do you mean what does it matter?
Switch is a handheld though, Switch lite especially, you're comparing apples to oranges
Not really when the number 2 best selling system is the DS.
Nobody cared that DS sold 150 million though, nobody compared it to the PS2 while it was still in production, the original game boy sold more than the PS1 and nobody cared like the modern tendies. you think it will somehow be a victory over Sony but it won't
Holy cope bro. The switch is considered a handheld and a console. It's been out for 6 years get over it.

It's a wash between PS2 and DS, it's like saying PS3 technically beat 360

nah, it's because it doubled as a dvd player

any proof?
Yes. There wont be any Switch 2 news until it does. Thats why the switch is at year 6 and still going strong.
idk. that last 10 million may end up being hard.
No, 25-30 million left, and that's A LOT. Sales are slowing down. My bet would be above 140 million, but not reaching 150.
>Sales are slowing down.
And they have ramped right back up again since Zelda and will dominate in the holidays with Mario Wonder.

Not that it's been made unavailable in russia 😐
The PS2 had the DVD thing going for it and the ridiculously low prices after the PS3 came out. Might be hard to overcome those advantages.
No. I'm assuming a late 2024 of switch 2
>2023
135m
>2024
138m
sales tank with switch 2
~149-150m long term
Consoles don't get price drops anymore, they get increases. Switch is the only one not to get an increase so take that as your price drop.
If the Switch ever gets a price drop and selects make a come back it could.
I have a Switch I bought on launch, a Switch Light and bought a Switch OLED for Zelda.
