Eh. Everything that doesn't have to do with fighting a boss or the music is utterly generic and braindead. Don't understand why this series is so praised it's easily in the bottom tier of AJRPG combat. There's no real depth or customization to it and while it has speed it just lacks any weight or impact whatsoever. The characters are also all completely uninspired as are the stories.
I'm the odd one out who only really liked the first one. The rest are standard action jrpgs with way too much grinding, mandatory grinding. Origins was a huge letdown I was expecting it to be amazing based on the hype.
Because I could do that with Ys1&2, and I don't like playing journalist mode. Origins made it so there's a damage resistance you have to crack to do more than 1 damage per opening and then half the bosses heal themselves, so don't bullshit me that there's no grinding. Every classic ys game after 1 has grinding.
But 1 has grinding too, some bosses are borderline impossible even on hard without any grinding so I can't imagine the nightmare required grinding where enemies oneshot you if you don't align yourself perfectly.
In fact, 1 is the only Ys game that requires grinding on hard, every other Ys game can be easily beat by clearing out rooms once.
VIII doesn't have much in the way of grinding. You do need a few reputation points under your belt for the true ending but most of those can be gotten naturally by doing some side quests and missions here and there, and then mapping out the island for the rest.
I got Ys I & II Chronicles+ to start with because I like Secret of Mana and Tails of games, am I making a fair comparison expecting a bit of the same approach to ARPGs?
ys 1&2 use the bump combat system >Mana and Tails
ys 7, 8, and 9 are somewhat similar to the mana series but very different compared to the TALES series. oath in felghana, ark of napishtim, and origins are my personal favorites and they are more like an action oriented zelda like with stats and a leveling system.
I didn't mind nudging in Mystery Dungeon games, so I'm alright with that. Did I make an okay choice for an entry into the series or should I do Origins instead?
Up until and including Seven.
After Seven it has been just a big, bloated and boring shitshow.
At least Seven had the decency to make you switch your weapons from time to time to learn new skills.
Anyone else here play Ys X?
I "platinumed" it on Switch (built in trophy feature). Karja is definitely my favorite Ys party member that isn't Adol or Dogi now. Having just one other side character really helps actually flesh them out.
The ship combat sucks arse lol, but the ground combat is pretty fun. The focus on blocking/parrying works well, even if the game was still really easy on Nightmare.
The graphics are kinda balls, and Falcom admitted this was a consequence of their 1 year release cycle.
Yeah I'm playing it now, just got to the viking base island after that starter town got raped. Not gonna lie everything about the game is very basic. Guard is also way too fricking powerful. It's more like an immunity rather than guard. I also can't seem to give a shit about the kids that were kidnapped.
I thought it was okay but I was very ready for it to be over. I'm still hung up on them cucking Dogi by having Adol call him over to a wall he couldn't break but some noname npc could. GOD that pissed me off.
I liked the nod to Adol's north pole adventures in the hidden endgame scene though.
Oh shit. Now I remember it. Those random npcs were the ghosts or whatever on the lsland where they tried to trick you into eating the fruit that turns you into griegers.
nvidia control center to limit the refresh rate of your panel. those 2 bosses go bonkers if you're playing at a higher refresh rate, more fireballs/faster travel time on them or some shit.
Absolutely
Yes.
Yes if you don't mind the PS2 graphics
This came out?
In Japanese, yes. The English localization will take longer I am sure.
Had a really rough start, lots of mandatory grinding in the first 4 or 5 games.
After that it gets a bit better.
They have to ad 17 times more pointless text and that takes time.
Yes
>In my time, i wandered everywhere
>Around the world, hope would always be there.
feena is for adol but reah is for toah thoughever
It's okay. Most of the series is mediocre, couple of the games are just outright trash and a couple of them are good.
I only played 8 and 9
I HIGHLY recommebd Ys 8
Ys origin is the best by far

From what I understand, as opposed to FF, Ys games follow some form of continuity right? How does nordics tie in with the rest?
>Ys games follow some form of continuity right?
if by continuity you mean Adol getting amnesia at the start of every game
Nordics takes place after 1+2 and before 4.

killing every single enemy when you enter a room for the first time is not "grinding"
No it isn't. Not on nightmare.
Why would you play on nightmare on your first playthrough?
Because I could do that with Ys1&2, and I don't like playing journalist mode. Every option other than nightmare is girlfriend mode.

Origins was really fun and the only game I played. Does that mean I won't like the rest of the series?

origins would spoil ys1&2

The Ark engine games are.
1, 2, Original 3 (oath blows), Napishtim, Origins and 9 are the only good ones.

Nah I don't read Nip so just waiting for the English. See you in 18 years.
Yeah, I liked it well enough.

Chapter 5
it's a very 6/10 game
>it's a very 6/10 game
That's what I'm feeling so far. Either that or maybe even a 5. I haven't played the monstrum nox. How does it compare to that?
I thought it was okay but I was very ready for it to be over. I'm still hung up on them cucking Dogi by having Adol call him over to a wall he couldn't break but some noname npc could. GOD that pissed me off.

What are you referring to?
?si=q6InHgsNk9bZG-Go&t=1753
It's a mid-to-late game sidequest
Oh shit. Now I remember it. Those random npcs were the ghosts or whatever on the lsland where they tried to trick you into eating the fruit that turns you into griegers.
I like Chronicles and the Napishtim games. Never could get into the party-based ones that followed. Just doesn't feel right.
Yes
>PS2 graphics
That's how you know it's good.
Yes.
Someone post the infographic.
you would be Ys to try it
the frick does that mean
He thinks it's pronounced "Why's"
still cant beat the bat guy
its been 4 years
limit the game to 30 fps and try it. same for the final boss i'm pretty sure
how do i do that
nvidia control center to limit the refresh rate of your panel. those 2 bosses go bonkers if you're playing at a higher refresh rate, more fireballs/faster travel time on them or some shit.
fricking RIP wataru ishibashi man
if you've had a lobotomy or have got brainworms yes
they are poor man's tale of

Yes. Play VIII. The rest are optional but there are a few other good ones like IX and VII.
