Is there a single worse name for a genre than roguelike/roguelite?

And why are names for video game genres so fricking awful? Other types of media don't have this problem.

Rogue is an RPG, and like many RPGs, it had its own mechanics and features people liked and wanted to copy, so the games that copied it were called Rogue-likes. The same happened with the RPG called Dragon Quest; many people liked that game, and created Dragon Quest clones, creating a sub-genre of RPG common in Japan. Rogue never advertised itself as a PDL, so you're just fighting against a tsunami of what's already been established as a game term. And I doubt you'll have success like the guys who took the Shooter genre that are split between Horizontal and Vertical Shooter, and got people to retroactively call them Schmups.

Using a search engine isn't hard. You can also get the gist of it by just looking at what kind of games the labels apply to, though people apply "roguelite" too often when actually talking about "roguelites".

Fricking "Immersive Sim" makes no fricking sense and is worthless in terms of providing information about the "genre". Only a handful of specific games and game series are called that, but they are neither more immersive nor simulate anything better than any other games. And the dumbest about it is, that there are very similar games, that somehow don't fall into that "genre". They are called First-Person-Action-RPG or Action-Adventure or whatever instead, which actually says more than nothing at all.
The most ironic thing I've seen in that regard is getting into a argument in a thread about it and in the same thread someone asked "what a immersive sim is" and got 3 different defintions from the 3 people who replied.

      Anonymous

For the longest time I though Immersive Sim refered to games like eurotruck simulator, farming simulator, maybe stuff like harvest moon.

I hear it most often associated with Looking Glass games like Ultima Underworld, System Shock 1 & 2 and Thief series and to a lesser extent to their "successors" like Bioshocks or Prey (2017).
So games with lot of environmental interaction and ways to move around and rather open way to reach the goal?

The names or 'purity' of genres is not as important as people make them out to be - their most useful task is giving people an idea of how a game plays if they've not touched it, and as such it'll depend on consensus.
This is the case with roguelikes, metroidvanias, wolfendooms, or the same autistic argument on /vrpg/ over what constitutes an RPG.

      Anonymous

Ya but roguelites and roguelikes play pretty differently.

        Anonymous

Sure, and I don't see the issue with having specific titles. I just think people get WAY too hung up on whether something applies to a particular genre - and once you start applying genre titles to things, you get groups that start getting mad if you have things that don't conform to genre norms.
You'll see it in any discussion of fighting games, and it happens a lot for RPGs like I mentioned.

          >you get groups that start getting mad if you have things that don't conform to genre norms.
Genre norms exist for a reason, if a game advertises itself as a TPS, and is in fact played in first person mode, I am going to be unhappy for a good reason

            Anonymous

What about a game that goes between first and third person views, what should that be classed as? One with shooting and an -optional- third person viewpoint? Even seemingly black-and-white examples like TPS can have outliers or weirdness to them.

              Anonymous

              for proper outliers yes
issue is not that the weird Roguelike hybrids are using the tag
it's that literally 90% of the games under steam that have the Roguelike tag don't even qualify for the hybrid status, they're imply not Roguelikes

      Anonymous

problem is that literally 90% of the games on Steam these days use the Roguelike tag to sell their game, not to actually indicate they have Roguelike gameplay
Makes finding new releases that are proper Roguelikes a pain and is strangling the genre because said genuine new releases don't get the exposure they need to survive

        Anonymous

Same problem with the "shoot 'em up" tag, morons use this tag for top down shooters, platformers with barely any dodging, vampire survivor clones, or even FPS games.

        Anonymous

Unfortunatly its a self feeding bs. As an indie dev you would be dumb to not use the roguelike tag on a roguelite cause the average roguelite fan is a moron and will search for roguelikes instead.

Everyone is so dishonest these days that we can’t agree on definitions for anything. If we are in the age where we can’t agree on the definition of “woman” what the frick makes you think we can agree on nuanced genre definitions

The homosexuals who get butthurt about this particular word don't even play actual old-school roguelikes, it's just an easy way of being a nuisance and shit up discussion when they don't have any arguments to do so.

        >don't read reviews, look up gameplay footage, ask around, just buy it because it says blargenfink RIGHT THERE

I think at this point for most people the only characteristic that matters is that you have "runs". Which is almost the same thing as permadeath and which usually requires procedural generation for variety.
It's not your autism this time, the term has degraded in meaning because of how much experimentation has been done mixing "roguelike elements" into various kinds of games. It's a lot less specific now than it used to be.
