Is there not a single good MMO in existence?

Is there not a single good MMO in existence? They all look like they have trash gameplay or are being fricked over by the devs somehow.

The genre died when WoW came out. Just let it go.

      >The genre died when WoW came out. Just let it go.
This coupled with the emergence of smartphones and the general mindset of instant gratification instead of investing time, killed the MMO genre. Meaningful MMOs require an investment of the player that the player today is unwilling to give.

This. Technically it died at WOTLK, the last good expansion.

No. All MMOs are intrinsically shit.

Dead genre. You can do victory laps in an EQ1 prog server every 2-3 years but that's about it.

Albion Online if you are not allergic to pvp. They only sell skins that you can even turn off. The subscription that gives 50% more exp can be easily bought with in-game currency and pays itself once you got the first month. That's it in terms of monetization. No p2w mechanics and it's been live for over five years.

Did a playthrough with a friend. It was really fun but I feel like the server had some lag that was making combat feel like shit sometimes.

The internet makes it impossible for you to have good MMOs. It's not a matter of mechanics, it's a matter of information. You have to be willfully ignorant to lack information about a game, its mechanics, or drops, and that's its own subculture now.

Most MMO players aren't interested in playing an MMO.

I won't pretend to be an MMO expert or anything, but it seems to me that the genre flourished when it was about exploring and teaming up with strangers to overcome challenges, and now it's basically a 1000 and 1 way to do a Mephisto run. People treat the endgame like the only part that matters, so we are stuck in an endless loop from endgame to endgame and mobileshit tier player engagement.

no not since WoW killed off the mmo market. You have to look into mmos pre WoW and find that things like Starwars Galaxies, planetside, guildwars, mabinogi, etc were and still technically a thing or are kept alive through emulators.

New MMOs are just always online singleplayer games with very little in the way of coop and player/world interaction. Older MMOs focused on sandbox world interaction, player interaction, community, coop, and had some loose story elements that were for roleplaying and lore building.
