Is this a good game or genuinely too flawed to be considered good? I remember this used to be THE RPG here, and now even amongst Xeno fans it's completely forgotten. People don't even ask for a remake anymore

A flawed masterpiece but still the greatest JRPG ever made.
Both of these.
It shouldn’t be remake unless monolith remakes it with the second disc fleshed out. I would NOT trust modern Square to touch Xenogears
Square should sell the IP to Namco and Namco should hire Monolith to do the remake. Square hasn't done shit with the IP but release characters for gacha and put out the occasional guide/artbook and maybe some figs. It's quite clear they're not going to make another game.
I bought it early 2000s and thought it sucked. I got it because robots. Americans are trained to worship israelites so when they see Kabbalah and Gnosism their programming tells them it is the best thing ever.
too flawed to be considered good? bizarre, who would think that?
in retrospect people seem to talk a lot about the difficulty or challenge of jrpgs-- let me make it clear that in these games' time, that was never, ever discussed. we did not play these games to be challenged.
Its an extremely flawed game but it's incredibly interesting. I wouldn't call the gameplay good, though.
It's the Planescape Torment of JRPGs, amazing writing, amnesiac hero, memorable cast of characters, but genuinely awful gameplay. Some people like it in spite of the gameplay others think it's a pretentious piece of shit that nosedives towards the end
>but genuinely awful gameplay
it's not awful in any way, it's active and you get to hit more buttons during fights than previous JRPGs.
again, if you want challenge, this is not the genre where it's found
You just mash your strongest deathblows there is zero depth and the encounter rate is godawful
there is zero depth to any jrpg combat in any game that anyone played back then
>dude muh shin megami tensei
played by 0 people outside japan in the 90s
jrpgs are not for combat. jrpg gameplay is fake and is designed to stretch out the dialogue
we ONLY played these games for the story. looking back at the gameplay is pointless
>we ONLY played these games for the story.
No wonder jarpigs have become cutscene sims.
>amazing writing
I abandoned it halfway through part 1 in part because of the low quality of the dialogue.
the writing (at least the translated version) isn't as good as PS:T, where it shines is its worldbuilding/lore which is much better because PS:T is largely a copypaste of DnD stuff. Also characters are better because they actually matter in the story unlike PST where only TNO, Ravel, and TTO matter (arguably Trias as well).
Also the gameplay is miles better in XG compared to PS:T despite it being mediocre, PS:T's gameplay is truly awful
Its basically a VN pretending to be a JRPG. Even the most die hard XG fans will tell you the gameplay and combat isn't the best thing. You play XG for the atmosphere and plot, and endure the gameplay sections in between.
That said, still kamige and one of the best things i had the privilege of playing.
Stand tall and shake the heavens.
>Dialog in an RPG means it's a VN
Direct yourself off a cliff zoomie
>Dialog in an RPG means it's a VN
Not sure what logical leaps you took to reach that conclusion, but you can very well turn Xenogears into a VN and very few things would be really lost. It would even be for the better.
SaGa
SMT
Etrian
Agreed 100%. I think JRPGs in general are way better than anime or VNs, but XG was definitely less suited to the medium it was put in moreso than 90% of the games in the genre which is saying something. I enjoyed it, but people call JRPG combat braindead there are definitely orders of magnitude to that mentality and XG was closer to the bottom of the barrel. Beyond the Beyond was more engaging in that aspect. The platform sections were abysmal, and dungeon exploration left a lot to be desired (going through the dungeon with your mech was cool like the first three times and then the gimmick wore itself out after that) but I still liked talking to npcs and doing dumb shit around town and even the mecha minigame. It actually probably would have rocked as a VN, maybe even gotten the recognition it deserved.
Arguably the best JRPG, the counterthesis to what can be accomplished by Chrono Trigger's brevity.
With a completed disc 2 and a continuation of the Perfect Works timeline, it would have been the Romance of the Three Kingdoms of vidya.
>Arguably the best JRPG
now i'm gonna say pfffft to that one
It's very good if you only care about narrative, it also has nice music and visuals for its time. Gamplay is bog standard ps1 era jrpg i.e. not very good
>now even amongst Xeno fans it's completely forgotten
bullshit
I remember Xeno fans losing their shit and spamming the board for weeks after Future Redeemed teased Xenosaga. I can't remember the last time they cared about Gears
gears is held hostage by shit enix who only ever does meaningless cameos with it, xenosaga has an actual chance of thriving because of bamco's close relationship with nintendo. Well I guess the current state of SE could lead to them selling the gears IP
what jrpgs have good gameplay lol
XenoCHAD Chronicles 2
I really have a love and hate relationship with disc 2 of Xenogears. I think the story really hits its stride and gets you interested at the end of disc 1 after you get infodumped but then the game can't follow up on it well since they have to speedrun the rest of the plot and it hampers the experience. On the other hand, by the end of disc 1 I was really fricking tired of actually playing Xenogears. The gameplay was mind numbing and the dungeons were awful.
>The dungeons
Frick me I remember all the jumping puzzles and falling and having to climb it all over again with random battles AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA FRICK THIS GAME
Filtered.
Yo anon I have a great game for you, it's called CrossCode. I unironically love it!
it's very obvious that the team was pulled off of this to help with final fantasy which is why disc 2 doesn't even pretend to be a real game
at a certain point you're basically imagining what the game would've been if it was done
Well the story is there, it's the gameplay they cut.
>Well the story is there
More like an outline of the story, because disc 2 also suffers in terms of plot due to its lightning pacing. One moment you are fighting Solaris in the SDF Macross Yggdrassil, then you have people mutating, then you are hunting relics, then get crucified, etc. All with no downtime or explanation.
The only arc that doesn't suffer is the ending, lol.
they explain things in the Chair Room that would have been several cutscenes
If they ever tried to remake this game I would kill myself.
Just wait a couple years before SE finishes killing itself, they are in no position to do it anyway. Nintendo and Monolith can sweep in and buy the rights back to where they belong once the die.
It's pretty flawed and honestly also overrated, but it is super ambitious and the story is interesting.
>complete and finished games get remakes
>Xenogears doesn't
Defend this, i dare you!
Defend it? I hope to God Xenogears never gets a remake under Square Enix
It's impossible to remake Xenogears and have it actually be good. It's too big.
You know how FF7 remake is 3 entire games, Xenogears would have to be like 5-6.
It's not realistic
>You know how FF7 remake is 3 entire games, Xenogears would have to be like 5-6.
that's bullshit ff7 remake could have been 1 game it's all anyone fricking wanted
>It's too big
Bullshit, companies are just israelites. They don't want to make complete games, they want to milk you instead, but they certainly could.
uh no, they could easily remake it without it being moronic like 7R
>hometown destroyed
>MC has amnesia
>MC has kamen rider form
>high tech evil empire
>shitty love interest that serves no purpose other than being love interest
>fighting tournament
>copy base of rebels that goes under the sand from ff6
>prison break
>older mentor character knows everything from the start but doesn't say anything
I was waiting for this so called amazing story to begin but all I found was generic shit
Only 30+ year old gamers can fully grasp the story.
>He lacks critical knowledge
You'll never escape the cycle of causality, lacan-kun.
Main character also fricks a woman in the pussy.
with a lot of games like this its hard for younger people to understand why it was so meaningful
for instance i wasn't really interested in this but xenogears was like THE first game where characters were a couple
>THE first
That's just plain wrong.
ok who were the other ones then
IHNMAIMS
It is flawed, but still my favorite jrpg. I don't want a remake by modern SE tbh, unless it's by the team that made Trials of Mana
This is one of the biggest pieces of shit Ganker has suckered me into playing, I'm convinced people only pretended to like it over contrarianism because Final Fantasy was too mainstream or some shit.
If I had to wager a guess (I never finished the game), from what I gathered it's the same kind of mental illness that affects Umineko fans, wherein they confuse the grand ideas this game with its execution. They see this overly ambitious story and begin to drool over it, completely ignoring other important aspects of storytelling like the prose and the pacing. And, in the case of Xenogears, on top of ignoring the poorly written dialogue, they completely ignore the awful gameplay. They're plotgays who are apparently willing to accept disc 2, which I'm told is little more than a plot summary where they tried to cram in as much of the original story they wanted to tell as possible.
idk how much you played, but this might as well be where the "it takes 40 hours to get good" meme originated.
>This is one of the biggest pieces of shit Ganker has suckered me into playing,
I know how you feel.
I modded my PS2 back when I was a young man just to import Suikoden 3 and Xenogears because they weren't available outside of America. I hated them both.
My wife Elly.
I replayed it last summer. 25 years later, it's still fantastic imo. Even with the problems in Disc Two, I still think it's one of the greatest JRPGs there is.
why did you post this twice the first iteration was fine
I thought the first post may have made it sound like I only first played it recently. I wanted to make it clearer that I didn't think age had lessened its greatness imo.
You mean trying to earn Fei's freedom from the prison town D-Block via the gladiatorial Gear fights?
Gear fights in a free roam arena.
This entire gameplay segment just came out of nowhere and is in the game for like 2 minutes.
All I remember from this game was playing the battle mode
>go on, bro
>eat that can of tuna and don't forget to share it with your gf
I'm still mad they didn't give Mitsuda more work, he drops two god tier OSTs and then gets banished.
This image has to be bait. Nobody really thinks this.
😉
>Final Fantasy IV
kinda close. It's VI
BASED
XenoBlack person shows his low IQ
What a moron list.
The music is kino as frick.
Whether it's the original in-game BGMs are the later remixed versions, they're all so good.
for me it's the g elements
i thought xenogears was super boring but it had some cool stuff in it. the anime scenes were pretty good. it was back when anime still had good art
pretty good but disc 2 really jumped the shark. iirc the gang faces like 3 different world ending events in the span of 30 minutes. I have no idea how people still think a completed remake of this is possible.
>Jumped the shark
You don't know what that actually means, you absolute Black person.
The developers were initially supposed to end the game at the end of disc 1 but they begged for more time and money to complete the story but much shorter and streamlined.
It was the best possible outcome and while not perfect, it's still the best JRPG ever made.
hey okay man I apologize for misusing the term but a continental war into a zombie apocalypse into the third impact is a bit too much too swallow over a short period of time. all the text summary in disc 2 felt like it would've equaled to triple or quadruple of what disc 1 had, there was no way they were ever going to have a finished game at any point during development given what was shown.
