NTA but they definitely wanted to softgate you into playing certain areas once you're a certain level only. The fourth area really shows this the most since the map itself has a large variety of enemy levels so if you head to Odin's area first then you'll get deleted by the Orochi.
Unless you real hate Demon Potentials, even with Omogatoki Crit you can't think it's THAT bad

i don't have the mitama dlc but i've heard it sort of trivializes the whole game and is not worth it

I mean, you can buy it, but what's the point of hard diff then? If you went full STR with Konkubino, so what? You can always get spells on demons.
I was into almighty spells / skills and focused mroe on MAG. Almighty helped me a lot on solo run as wll (but I did solo on normal, not on hard) because of its HP / MP drain abilities.
You shouldn't really need to grind much outside of the final area. I remember stopping to grind a couple levels before the first two bosses. In general if you do enough battles to see all the encounters in the area you should stay properly leveled.
I personally didn't care for how sandboxy the game is but the combat felt pretty good. Demifiend was a good challenge of you've got the DLC.
The funny thing is that if you go STR build for 80% of the game you are relying on magic most of the time to get more actions, it’s not until you get the endgame super phys skill that your STR build pays off.

STR is fine, you can get by with focusing on STR but using magic. I’d say STR since with the super move at the end you can easily take care of the hardest bosses.

it has the best gameplay of the entire series, so it is by default the best GAME in the series, story is irrelevant, it is mostly an excuse for the gameplay to happen, if you believe otherwise, then you are a Last of us 2 fan

It's mostly good, but fell apart for me once I got to Ueno which is the second to last big part of the game.
