World design feels simple by our standards but mario feels amazing to control to this day. There's a reason it's in a league of its own as far as gen 6 collectathons go.

Games don't age. If you're going into it with a mindset that they do you may as well not play it.

The controls don't hold up as well, specially if you played the recent Mario games, but if you can get used to it, it's a very fun game. Since i as a kid i go back to it at least once a year even if to play a few stages. It's a very comfy game.

That's not what he meant moron. He's not talking about button mapping, he's talking about the control the player has over the main character.

Try it vanilla. Mario 64 can get a bit cryptic at times but it's not a difficult game, especially if you've played a Mario game before. Later levels can get a little exhausting but the opening levels leave a phenomenal first impression. Try going in blind if you can, too- don't spoil all the best secrets for yourself.

If you take the time to master the controls and momentum and jumping and such the movement is probably the most fun in the whole series. Same goes for Sunshine but, both can have shoddy level design at points.

You telling me the controls aren't tight for that game too? I could understand any other complaints for the game

the controls and movement are hot garbage. Mario has zero acceleration, so you see people playing it and they have to light tap the joystick a couple times to get to an edge of a platform for a collectible and ensure they don't barrel off into an abyss and lose a life.
frick Sunshine, it's a dogshit game.

Fair enough having momentum in 64 is definitely better. I still had a lot of fun with Sunshine you can pull off more varied maneuvers than in Galaxy.

instead of a jetpack they should have included one of those gimmick challenges once, where you have to sneak. then they would have afforded decent movement mechanics into the game.

SM64 had piranha plants that would fall asleep, so we inadvertently got good controls. lol

              Anonymous

That would've solved the problem of tight maneuvering on small platforms at least. Which is obviously a big part of a platform game

level design is a bit middling
there's some weird jank (look up pretty much any video from pannenkoek, though his most recent one about invisible walls is probably the most relevant to a casual player)
the camera is serviceable but obviously limited by the N64 controller only having one analog stick
however, it has the smoothest god damn movement of ANY 3d platformer ever, plus a billion rom hacks of varying difficulty to make full use of that movement

it's worth playing if you can get around the camera controls. But if that's what filters you, then consider sleeping on railroad tracks.

  21. 1 month ago

    >how did it age?
Poorly in terms of controls. Mario slips and slides way too much when you try to move him.

The game itself is fine however it's more a tech demo for the new (at the time) analogue controller than a proper game - because there's only like 4 or 5 little demo levels and they just make you play them 45 times each with very slightly different objectives.

it's held back by the camera (jumping towards the camera) and mediocre wall jump mechanics (unforgiving, no buffering)
also sliding off platforms when you didn't land a jump all that well is one of the most frustrating parts (screen shakes, landing animation keeps looping as you move forward and you fall off)

i think the level design is boring. im not a fan of the wide open collectathon levels even if thats what people seem to like the most. my favorite levels are the ones with weird test-room style designs with random platforms, like lethal lava land and wet dry world.

  25. 1 month ago

While it controls better than most 3D platformers and I'll give it kudos for not doing the lazy mid-air jump meme but the actual game around it is rather lacking.

Enemy types are more often than not too passive, not used creatively enough to be engaging, and/or don't compliment the platforming.

A lot of stars are redundant and only exist to meet that 120 quota. The caps feels like an afterthought. Bosses are terrible, even for Mario standards. Bowser is especially disappointing.

The lives system is poorly implemented to the point where it might as well not even exist, although most Mario games are also guilty of this.

Don't listen to the casuals in this thread, the controls are some of the best in any video game. The only real flaw is the camera (it's generally pretty good at giving a decent view on its own, but it's a total b***h when it isn't, and often just refuses to move manually).
The graphics are dated even by N64 standards where there are a lot of obvious stock assets thrown around that give it a much more abstract vibe than Zelda or Banjo for instance.
The music is great even though there aren't that many different tracks.
