Doesn't matter but they are all worth playing
It's just 3 games and they're not even long. Mother 1 is 25-ish hours give or take.
Play it, it's worth it.
>It's just 3 games and they're not even long. Mother 1 is 25-ish hours give or take.
That's pretty long. At least for my standards.
Yea. Just make sure to save (not save state!) cause it's tricky.
>At least for my standards.
for an RPG, that's not very long at all.
>save
In the case of Mother games, they work like Dragon Quest, i.e. if you lose, you go back to the last save point but you don't lose the EXP, only punishment is you lose half your money, but you can always save the money on the ATM before you set out on a dangerous part. So yeah, save often, but don't fear getting a game over because it's not like other RPGs where you go back to your last save point and actually lose the progress.
>That's pretty long
Compared to RPGs like DQVIII or FFXII it's literally nothing
>not long
>has to stay away for over a literal day
They can be played in any order they're mostly just completely separate games. First game is one of the coolest jrpgs on nes but not everyone likes third gen games so skip it if that's you
It’s a bit older and more primitive than the others. I recommend at least trying it, if you don’t like it you don’t have to finish it.
The connection between the first game and the rest is extremely ambiguous. There has never really been a consensus wether Earthbound follows its events or is a reboot. There are more than minor callbacks to the first, but how they *fit* is a little weird.
You do not need to play the first game to play the rest though.
Mother 3’s story seems disconnected from the rest but someone from Earthbound is a major character. You dont NEED to play EB to understand the story but I recommend it for context.
If you want to play Mother, you should play Dragon Quest 2 first.
The gameplay of the entire game is based on the idea that the players are not only familiar with Dragon Quest 2, but that they fricking loved it. Which, at the time of its release and for the audiance it was released for, was true.
>you should play Dragon Quest 2 first.
Might as well start with 1 then, it's not very long
decide for yourself. Mother 1 is one of the best NES RPGs, but it's not Earthbound. it's not connected to the rest that much, like others said EB could as well be a reboot.
Mother 1 doesn't really have much of the style, characters, quirky humor, or psychedelia of EB. But it shines when it comes to gameplay, and it's very open. However, it's closer to a dungeon crawler, though not nearly as hard as some of them.
If you want the atmosphere, quirky characters, and prefer your rpgs to be easy, just play Earthbound.
Many people assume that the first game in the Mother series, released in Japan in 1989 and later localized for the Game Boy Advance in 2003 as EarthBound Beginnings, is not connected to the second game, released in Japan in 1994 and localized as EarthBound for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. However, this assumption is incorrect.
The subtitle of Mother 2, "Gyiyg Strikes Back," alone is a clue to the connection between the two games. In Mother 1, the final boss is Gyiyg, an alien invader from another planet who has taken control of the minds of humans and animals to carry out his plans. The protagonist, Ninten, and his companions travel across different regions of the world to collect melodies and use them to weaken Gyiyg in battle.
Dr. Eggman and Ganon strike back every time too but that doesn't mean you have to play all of the games. Only EB and Mother 3 are somewhat connected because of Porky and even then it's not really all that important
I feel like I'm going to be the one who inevitably ends up leading the tasteful remake on this one. I just don't know where the free 3d artists are going to come from. The starmen people don't even like this game
Does Earthbound Beginnings on the Wii U have a good official translation?
yes, you should play that version.
Earthbound Zero is the official translation, the VC version is literally the same ROM
So "Earthbound (USA) (Proto)" is the same as "EarthBound Beginnings (USA, Europe) (Virtual Console)"?
Pretty much. The VC release confirmed (once again, the first time was when Mother 1+2 was released for the GBA with all the changes from the US NES prototype) that EB Zero was in fact a genuine leaked ROM of the officially localized but never released version
unless you enjoy grindy nes jrpgs (unlikely unless you grew up with them) theres no point. just play earthbound. mother 3 i wouldnt recommend at all.
It is if you play the fan translation of the Game Boy Advance version and equip the Easy Ring.
>easy ring
You didn't beat the game
Yes I did. The only difference is I didn't waste hours of my life grinding and getting into battles every 3 steps.
>Yes I did beat the game
>the only difference is that I didn't engage with the gameplay!
Huh huh, tell me more
Groucho?
4th-D Split?
Bread crumbs?
PK Fire Omega?
Nah. I just want an Easy Ring and Spam the Fight Command until I win.
>play any gaygified hacks aside the old Tomato translations and undubs
You can recuse yourself and stick to Mother 3 if real jampigs are too much for you.
you can play em in any order but personally i'd recommend 2 to 3 to 1. they're all great but 1 can be a bit grindy, especially if you don't make use of your psi abilities.
M1 results in the bad future of Earthbound when Giygas comes back for vengeance, probably.
Buzzbuzz in Earthbound has some hint at being Ninten, sort of.
Mother 3 exists further in the future of the bad timeline after Giygas fricks up the Earth, most likely.
Is kinda aged, and have gameplay & balance issues, so you could either skip to Mother 2 (that in practical terms is an upgraded version of Mother), or try Mother 1 with the help of a guide or previous advices.
Also, hearing the Catherine Warwick Mother Album is obligatory:
¡
its the only good game in the series. mother 3 is a lame dragon quest 4 rip off. mother 2 is one of the biggest homosexual flags for people who dont even play or enjoy games.
The second and third games are top-notch in almost every regard. The only thing that irks me about all three of them is the inventory system, although it gets better with each one. Mother 1 is an acquired taste, with a good bit more roaming around aimlessly combined with a high encounter rate making it a bit of a slog at times. I'd play 2/3, then 1 if you really want more. There are a few hacks of 2 that seem like they might be cool too.
i still think m1 had the best ost
Are there any must have mods for M1? Bugfixes or anti-grinding?
M3 as well, but Earthbound seemed fine to me so I'm guessing they might have gotten it right the first time.
For MOTHER you should use MOTHER Restored.
For Earthbound you should use MOTHER2 Perfect Edition.
MOTHER3 doesn't have anything like this.
>MOTHER3 doesn't have anything like this.
There is a patch that fixes the music so it is of better quality, and doesnt have background noise.
Well I guess there is one then. Not gameplay/uncensoring focused but it sure makes listening to the music better without those crackles.
What about Mother 25th Faithful Edition+ ReFaithful+Vanilla Sprites that was just released?
Restored is for if you want all the sprites to be exactly how they were.
Dragon Quest 2 but good and USA
It's a good game and it's fun to play blind especially since some stuff ends up kind of surprising the first time around. There's definitely some bullshit aspects to it but it's still completely doable without a guide or anything and feels satisfying when you get through those parts.
It's probably my favorite NES RPG. Has some prime music and atmosphere, though there are some pretty stupid parts like that factory maze and climbing Mt Holy Loly. Though aside from that, it's just nice.
This game is better than Earthbound and I'm not joking.
FYI, there was an official companion book released at the same time as the game and you have to read it in order to fully understand the story of the game. Without the companion book there are plot holes. The book was republished when the GBA version was released. It has never been translated so good luck.
>without it there are plot holes
No there's not. Ambiguity, sure. Stuff left unexplained, sure. Plot holes? Nope.
>No there's not.
There literally are.
>Stuff left unexplained, sure.
That would be plot holes, moron.
Not explaining a plot point thoroughly doesn't automatically constitute a plot hole.
play it first, you'll appreciate all the callbacks in 2 & 3 if you do
fair warning, it is pretty hard at the beginning but once you get the hang of things it will be a cakewalk. just take your time and explore
