Is this how we get Nintendo to make a new Mother?

>A gamer said he spent over 5.6 million Japanese yen, or over $40,000 if translated to US dollars, on Nintendo stock, and used his opportunity to ask a question during the Japanese gaming giant's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday about a fan-favorite series he wants to see revived.

Does he realize that he could have paid a small team to develop a spiritual successor with that money?
Idiot. Nintendo is headed for a downswing with the aging of the switch and their inability to prepare for the future of their ecosystem. He's gonna lose big on that investment.

Maybe if you outsource a lot to india you could afford enough manpower to finish a game with that sort of money.
Otherwise that's chump change. When you say small team, you're probably thinking 4 passionate indie that work from home after their real job for a year (10k each). Meaning zero actual progress.

The Mother IP is actually owned by Shigesato Itoi himself and not Nintendo, if Itoi isn't on board with a new game then it can't happen, and Itoi considers M3 to be a good finale for the franchise, so there's no need for more
Hence, a new Mother is pretty much impossible unless Itoi wants to make a new one before he kicks the bucket (unlikely)

      Anonymous

It's very surprising to me that a corporation would let an individual own the rights to a game they developed, but apparently Itoi is some big dick celebrity in Japan so maybe it shouldn't be.

        Anonymous

Itoi is a big dick celeb and had the advantage of making his contract with Nintendo during the 80's, when people had no idea vidya would get as big as it is nowadays, so managing to keep the rights was probably not too hard, and the man was clearly passionate about it considering how involved he was in all 3 games.

Nintendo also had shared ownership to the Characters and Games Rare created and when they were sold to Microsoft Nintendo gave them 100% ownership of their games in exchange for Nintendo getting 100% ownership of the DK and Starfox characters Rare created.

mother being a product of the 80s has nothing to do with it.
Nintendo likely let capcom has some rights to minish cap and the oracle zelda games.
platnium had shared rights over W101 and astral chain, etc.
They just rather all major parties be willing for a new project in that series.

            Anonymous

I like the idea that there are series specific to an era in gaming and don't need to continue for the sake of it. Not all of them have to be like this but some would do just fine being 'that series was our generation', or something like that.

      Anonymous

It's a shared ownership of the IP, something Nintendo does by choice to make sure creators hold a degree of control over their work. I really with more companies would do this however the contracts and studio ownership is completely one-sided in every media format.
