why can't nintendo make a new game instead?
they're basically reselling an old game at a higher cost than when it originally released.

I think that Nintendo right now is trying to transition more into being a core focused company after the switch sold primarily to the core audience (young adults age 20-40). And I think they're using TTYD as a way to show that. It's one of their most core focused legacy games, with a serious story, incredible visuals, more interesting and unique characters/setting, more mature ideas, and it's even dripping in sexual undertones.

For a similar reason I'm also expecting them to make an OoT remake soon.

Most kids playing on Nintendo at this point have Nintendo fan parents, and those parents are most likely in that core demographic. It makes no sense to target the console at anyone but core gamers. Kids can deal with it, I played fricking Donkey Kong country when I was 7 I'm pretty sure 10 year olds can handle TTYD.

I disagree. It is a boring slog of a game that fails both as a platformer and a role playing game. I enjoyed it when it came out but it is a very difficult game to replay now. The dialogue is funny and the music is great, but it's not good to actually play.

He's obviously a boy, but that doesn't mean he's a troony. The only context I have ever seen trannies in Japanese media is making fun of them for being deranged. Much more likely that he's supposed to be a trap, a cute boy dressing like a girl to get fricked by men.

There's no indication whatsoever that Vivian thinks he is a girl. In fact, when his sister calls him a man he doesn't disagree with it. There is a massive difference between a cross dresser and a troony. A troony is a modern western cultural idea. It doesn't exist anywhere else. It's the mentally deranged notion that someone can actually become the opposite gender. Cross dressing is just a sexual fetish. Vivian wants to look and act like a woman, this is a fact. Vivian thinking he is a woman, is an opinion, with no real basis and it's very unlikely that it was the developers intention in Japan 20 years ago.

I'm glad this is getting remade, because it's genuinely one of the best games ever made and a lot of people are going to play it for the first time now and see that. TTYD has a cult fanbase, but it deserves more than that. It has some of the best visual design of any game. It has incredible music. The characters are so much fun, and have so much dialogue. Every single npc in the game has at least like 5 or 6 lines of dialogue throughout the game, Goombella has a tattle log for every single place and character. It's got a ton of content, real content not grinding like most JRPGs.

After this game it will be completely impossible to sell another sequel to sticker star.

I think it's going to release the same or similar time as the switch 2, intentionally, because I think it's gonna be cross gen. In fact, I'm confident it's gonna be cross gen because
A)The Switch version is half the framerate of the original
      B) They changed the button colors to match the super famicon like 4 other games recently
They'll use it as a selling point for the new console with the switch version being 1080p30 and the switch 2 version being 4k(DLSS)60fps.

Not him, but Dolphin is very finicky and will work differently on every system. It's taken years and a lot of different settings changes but I've finally been able to get TTYD to run decently recently. It's still got issues though, emulation is never gonna be as good as running it on actual hardware. So I'm definitely not complaining about a much higher resolution version with new textures and lighting running natively.

              Anonymous

I emulated TTYD to completion on Dolphin well over a decade ago and it had no issues that I could tell even back then.
              >emulation is never gonna be as good as running it on actual hardware
For gamecube dolphin out of the box is already great and if you're willing to go further with the setup it becomes the definitive way to experience most of the library.

It's a difference in standards. Dolphin is a great emulator so the issues it has are usually relatively minor things, although on my current computer I had it crashing a lot for a while and it took some tweaking to fix that. But even minor issues in a game you truly love are annoying. This is my favorite game of all time. I want to play it in the best way possible, especially because I play this game a lot. Every year or two I'll come back to it. Whether the remake has enough value for you is a decision for you to make. But it has enough value for me and I'm going to buy it. So are millions of other people. I hope that doesn't cause you to screech and throw a tantrum like a 4 year old.

idk what to say man, skill issue. None of the games I play have anything like you're describing. Obviously there are some games OG hardware is better on but to say that your toaster not handling dolphin in the year of our lord 2024 means it can't surpass a hacked wii is absurd.

When the frick did I say it cant run better than on a hacked Wii? I do currently emulate the game and that's because I don't want to play it on 480p. I don't actually believe you've seen it run on "dozens of systems", but that's not representative anyway. Perhaps, for example, you're only seeing it run by people who have more powerful hardware or people who are very experienced with emulating the game and have found the perfect settings for their system. Surely you can understand that it's extremely fricking obnoxious for you to be speaking for the vast majority from such a limited perspective.

In the post you're replying to I suggest that maybe you're only looking at people who are very experienced with emulating the game who have found the perfect settings and then your evidence to me is TTYD content creators. These are not normal users. They've probably spent hours testing every single possible setting to get the best possible performance on their system. These do not represent most players, or really almost any of the players.

TTYD absolutely needs game specific settings. There are certain default settings that if you don't change the game runs horrendously if at all. The fact you don't know this tells me you have never actually emulated this game. What the frick is wrong with you?

It's not just about Paper Mario either. TTYD with modern graphics will clown on most of the switch library. This tells me they must be pretty confident in the games they're making for the switch 2. Because if you compare TTYD to stuff like Luigi's Mansion 3 or Yoshi's Crafted World it's still clearly a big step above, especially with modernized graphics.

I love TTYD, I still have my original copy (I own all 6 Paper Mario games, shamefully) and I play it once every couple of years.
I'm looking forward to this remaster. I will buy it day 1.
For starters, it just looks like a really polished and thoughtful remaster. I know people on Ganker are somewhat divided on the paper aesthetics being applied to TTYD, but I think it looks great. I'm also hopeful that they add some small content like they did with Super Mario RPG.
Secondly, I have a good amount of people in my life who have zero interest in emulation whatsoever, who love Paper Mario 64 but have never tried TTYD. So I'm happy that they'll have a chance to play it.
And thirdly, I like what the game represents as far as crusty old Nintendo. The Gamecube/GBA/DS days were this small era of experimentation and a lot of fresh ideas being brought to the platform. Paper Mario and TTYD, with their unique interpretation of the Mario world, was no exception. And for 20 years or so it seemed like Nintendo was doing everything they could to sweep all that uniqueness under the rug in lieu of New Super Mario Bros "brand cohesion". So I'm looking forward to this game coming back, hopefully being the best selling Paper Mario game ever, and setting the record straight once and for all.

Yes, and they should remake Paper Mario 64 next. I'm hoping the game does very well and upper management takes the series away from Tanabe's filthy hands.

They would be stupid not to remake Paper Mario 64 since they can reuse a lot of the assets, the lighting and the engine. They could probably finish it with a small team in 2 years.

They should take some notes from TTYD64 if they're going to remake 64 after TTYD.

I hope it sells incredibly well so Nintendo finally understands that people like their Paper Marios to be good RPGs and then they finally make a new one afterwards.

This is pretty obviously a filler game to release on the current successful system as a safety net just in case their next system doesn't take off too smoothly, like how the 3DS was still getting games even with the Switch coming, but you could really tell they were short budgeted and not given too much manpower to not take away from the Switch's library too much. Notice we don't even have a release date for this game at all, when we do for Luigi's Mansion 2 (another pretty obvious filler release), which is coming in fricking Summer.

      Anonymous

We don't have a release date because it's going to be cross gen. They'll announce the date the same time they announce the date for their next console.

        Anonymous

I don't get why people say this, it's a cheap remake. What would the point be in making this cross gen? Also I think this game isn't going to even sell well anyway, and will sell less than the SMRPG remake

TTYD is an absolutely beloved game and one that still holds up today. The launch period is very critical and a 4k version of TTYD would absolutely drive hype and push consoles. It also works really well with the timing because they will want one last holiday title for the switch and TTYD being a remake of a GC game can run on the switch.

  33. 4 months ago

even if emulation is perfect it still feels like work to get the game going compared to just playing on the switch

ttyd was a direct upgrade to 64, why would they do 64?

Because the generation who grew up with Gamecube are in their phase where they're new to having disposable income and are the most exploitable right now. That and they already have an N64 service to play the first Paper Mario on, while they refuse to make one for Gamecube games for the aformentioned reason.

        >Because the generation who grew up with Gamecube are in their phase where they're new to having disposable income
Not really no. The gamecube kids range from age ~25-33. It's the Wii kids who are just now getting a disposable income.

Trooth Bombz "The Great Last" from /asp/

Same reason Lilo & Stitch is getting a remake and a started getting a frickton of merch made two Christmases ago. Same reason they went back and finished Samurai Jack. Same reason the new Puss in Boots movie had more hype then the first one. Same Reason the Raimi Spider-Man cast were called in to draw all the dimes for Marvel. What said.

The stories aren't connected and TTYD is better so they're putting that one out first to hook people. A lot of people will probably not even realize TTYD is a remake because it feels like a modern game.

      A) PM64 has been released on every console since the Wii in some capacity, while TTYD has never seen a re-release
      B) Nintendo's current philosophy seems to be the line between N64 and GCN is where they can charge full price for things. Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario? Throw em on the NSO. Metroid Prime, Pikmin 1 and 2, Super Mario Sunshine (sort of), Paper Mario TTYD? Full priced release, physical copies, the whole 9 yards.

but I agree the whole thing does feel extremely unlike Nintendo.

      Anonymous

PMario 64 is available on switch right now while TYD isn't.

      Anonymous

PM64 is on NSO, meanwhile they can charge 60 bucks for a Gamecube re-release running in an emulator with a weekend's worth of work

      Anonymous

64 is already on NSO, and has a much more concrete artyle(also, its completely sprites)
They chose TTYD because every single criticism of the last 3 Paper Mario games almost certainly brought up TTYD. So now they're going to see how much this remake sells, and then based the next PM game off it or not.

So what changes will be made to the game itself? After playing the SMRPG remake, I can say that it is the superior game for its improvements, just the fact that the sprinting speed is the default speed now makes it better in my eyes.

Anyone else a bit worried that it's gonna be TOO faithful and won't have much QoL improvements over the original? If they leave TTYD's original inventory and item storage system untouched it's going to feel jarring after how SMRPG improved its respective game's.

Because they have made three (four if feel unkind to Super) Paper Mario games since this one, and they all sucked. So yeah, at this point, I rather them to get back to what works, and teach the new generation what a good Paper Mario actually looks like.

    >is this REALLY a necessary remake?
yes and no. they needed to rerelease it in some form and the only way they could justify charging full price for it is if they remade it. an hd rerelease similar to pikmin 1&2 would have sufficed but maybe they can make more money this way and train their staff how to make good paper marios again.
    >why can't nintendo make a new game instead?
the last three times they tried making a new paper mario the results were disappointing. I would still prefer a new game but I hope they make the best of this situation.

Nintendo, like many game companies, know people are morons and will rebuy games they've already played at full price, whether it's because of graphics shit or portability. It's the morons that are the problem, Nintendo is just playing it smart.

A)A significant amount of new content is added
2)The game was unbalanced and the Remake changed the balance to be fair
D)It offers a completely different experience to the orignal/includes the original with it
