its very bad, not even Haley treats the Eldar as bad as Goto did

I haven't read this one, but I'm pretty sure C.S Goto is the worst BL author. It takes a LOT of work to be more aggressively fetishy then fricking Ian Watson, and you can hear Ian Watson salivating while he writes about genestealer pussy.

The worst writer is automatically Abnett since he was the one who introduced perpetual and erda

Not ADB with his Chaos wank and reducing all Primarchs to manchildren with daddy issues and his insistence that No Arms was just pretending to be moronic with blacked crusades?

This. ADB did more damage with First Heretic then almost any other bl writer with their entire catalog.

            >manchild primarchs
That shit started with the second HH novel, way before First Heretic

          This.
Pre-Abnett the big E was overall a pretty reasonable guy, and the Primarchs were all strong, competent figures that made their choices.
Post Abnett, the Emperor is the worst father in human history, and the Primarchs fell into their places by circumstance and fate and were nearly to a man, childish and petulant.
Dude definitely "left his mark on the franchise", but no one fricking wanted him to.

Bad writing is about more than just the ideas.

Depends on how you judge. If by the book itself, perhaps, it's a strong contender with bad writing, fluff knowledge and it's basically recycle of his own movie scenarios with his gory magical realm.

However the difference is that Goto never gained any significance like ADB or Abnett did. Their books probably did the most damage to the universe, and became the new canon to add insult to the injury.

Nah, Goto is the worst *author*.
Abnett is arguably one of the best writers when he did put an effort, he simply doesn't bothers because you will eat up all the garbage anyway.
ADB is trash, he will never rise above a fanfic tier writing about "my imaginary gf in spess".

          >Their books probably did the most damage to the universe, and became the new canon to add insult to the injury.
To be fair, all of the retcons and new bits of lore were approved by GW's editing team, and in some cases developed during brainstorming sessions rather than by individual authors, so you can only put so much blame against any one individual author

            Anonymous

Yeah but by several of the writer's own admission the editing team and IP Manager greenlights pretty much anything that *could* fit in 40k and ADB outright said the very attempt at internal consistency made the HH series unique. So the editting team has always been a rubber stamping more than anything unless you did something truly off the wall (like blue Blood Angels, as a Gav Thrope example). Ergo, if the novels got worse, it's because the writers got worse, because the rubber stampers are essentially a null entity.

        >erda

Nah, Erda's awesome. Everything wrong in 40k is because of a fit of hysterics from a shrill woman fighting over the kids after divorcing her ex. It's the most based 40k has been in decades.

It's not just the worst 40k novel, it's the worst novel period that I have ever read in my entire life. This is to books what The Room is to film.

It's not because Inquisitor by Ian Watson exists.

Whereas Ian Watson's stuff is to books what Eraserhead is to film - something incredibly kino but which tasteless normies cannot appreciate because they don't get it, the only thing that registers is the parts that are "icky".

      No, Inquisitor slaps.
Yeah Ian likes to be a bit icky, but he actually uses that incredibly well to build a sense of visceralness to his work. He's no smut fiend.
I'd unironically class him as one of the best 40K writers of the lot.

That's the position you are putting us in by asking us which 40k novel is better or worse than any other.

you know that comic were the dm is inserting his piss fetish and the two guys want him to stop, Goto does something like that with the Eldar but instead of piss its torture, that and it takes the cake for eldar getting btfo'd in really dumb ways, such as that one chapter a tank of theirs gets knocked out by some kids throwing rocks into its exhaust ports

if you want smut go with Watson instead, or maybe McNeill

Before the HH books there was basically nothing about any of them as people. The Emperor wasn't "reasonable", he was a blank slate.

he is probably either butthurt his headcanon primarch no longer exists, or he wanted Big E to be space jesus, which is clearly never what the setting creators wanted

              >the emperor was supposed to be space Jesus. Now he's simply a deadbeat dad in a fedora
He started out as a dune reference, and the Imperial religion was supposed to be one of the things holding the Imperium back

It was only later on that the Emperor and the religion around him was sometimes shown in a positive light

Yeah but by several of the writer's own admission the editing team and IP Manager greenlights pretty much anything that *could* fit in 40k and ADB outright said the very attempt at internal consistency made the HH series unique. the individual authors planned out some of the story arcs that spanned multiple stories, and GW did get involved in some niche issues like when they had the authors increase the number of space marines by a factor of 10

Probably. But I can't think of anything Goto wrote that wouldn't just be "bad" by Contemporary standards. He's definitely not egregious like he was in the 2000s; likely still the worst but by a smaller and smaller margin

    Yes

Goto is just below Nick Kyne in how shit they are

ADB writes cringe but its at least entertaining cringe

Watson's book is fun when you read it as the first 40k book and still has the wackiness of rogue trader
