What's wrong with synth meat if it's 100% identical to a piece of animal meat to even an atomic level?

      Anonymous

The implication for any dystopia is that either common animals are extinct which means most animals are or that the rich/elite get the real food while everyone else eats garbage.

It doesn't need a brain, so it can't become self aware. It doesn't need a mouth, so it can't cry out. It's even less objectionable than growing plants, because it's never really 'alive'.

Theres nothing to be gained from that. You either work with the bare minimum or profit. Its profitable to kill billions of animals for food or give people cheap synthetic food or bugs while making meat a luxury item for the 1%. I doubt Starfield will touch on any of this and the synthetic meat is just there because Bethesda thinks like a child, which is making things quirky and futuristic. Like Fallout having a gun that launches nukes in a franchise that preaches the dangers of nuclear warfare.

        >its 100% identical! we can make perfect meat!

because that isnt how it works, thats just marketing lies. The flavor of meat, as well as its nutritional content, its texture, and so on are the result of factors you cant account for when printing out 'meat protiens'. Fat deposits and marbling are the result of the animal's lifestyle, and different cuts are the result of taking pieces from different parts of the animal. There's a reason faux meat products always come in the same forms of 'hamburger, sausage, or preessed patty or breaded and fried'. They cant do the things they say they can, and they never will be able to. Its' all a marketing gimmick you get you to accept the concept of fake meat, to consume fake meat, all the while they string you along with a 'well maybe later it will get better, just wait 2 weeks and trust the plan'.

        [...]
the implication is that power is so centralized that even food production has been taken out of the hands of the common person and you are forced to eat processed slop. And the slop comes in different tiers to force a hierarchy in class, which is then used to mold society. Poor people get nutrient weak food so they stay weak and stupid, rich people get real food so they can grow to their genetic potential. Thats why its dystopian and not utopian.

you cant trust big corporations not to cut corners, or screw the lower classes over... so why would you trust them monopolizing your food supply?

Assuming that, because something isn't good enough right now, it never will be is a shortsighted mindset. Many everyday things we have now would have been considered impossible by people in the past. It's especially weird to choose that specific thing to draw the line on. Consider how impossible someone a hundred years ago would have thought lab grown meat was. Honestly, do you think that it's a bigger leap from having no artificial meat to having it or from having artificial meat that sucks to having some that doesn't?

On average it's factually correct though. In this day and age the possibility of your town going and getting raided by a warband of vikings is near zero. Your internet speeds are significantly faster. Your phone is no longer tethered to your house. Your likelihood of dying to polio, tuberculosis, or smallpox are virtually nonexistant. The big thing that gets worse with time is your propensity for boredom. Ages ago you wouldn't have the time to get bored because your days are too busy going from point A to point B to do manual labor C.

What's wrong with eating human meat if it's 98% similar to pork to even a genetic level?

You guys really think a corporation with a stranglehold on a galactic food supply is going to go to the expense of synthesizing the molecules that make grass fed cow fat taste better than American corn-finished shite? It's nothing but wonderbread and textured vegetable protein unless you take a stand in the age of space exploration.

Not him but your post is substantiated on the idea that creating good product will always be harder than creating bad product and just dumping a shitload of chemicals in there.

What if instead of just growing vegetable waste and flavouring it, it was the future and they were able to grow meat? What if instead of mixing in 100 different chemicals to vaguely approximate meat, it was the future and they were able to mix up a few barrels of the handful of compounds that actually make up meat in a matter that formed meat?

It would be a different story if you were commenting just on socioeconomic behaviour instead of only being able to parse 31st century, theoretical science through 21st century understanding

                >ou don't have to, but most people tend to value art more when it's made by real people
its been proven time and time again that a sufficiently trained AI can produce images indistinguishable from those made by a human artist.
The only people pissy about this fact are twitter artists who have realized they can't live off of commissions any more.

I completely agree with you, but it's less about the quality and more about whatever intangible thing people value in art. Real artists aren't safe because they're better in a technical sense, but because they make real art rather than commercial illustrations. Commercial artists would be out of a job, but so will 95% of people.

Synthetic food also appears in utopias as well and may even be part of the reason for those settings being utopian.

I have no problems with synthmeat, mainly because actual synthmeat will exist in an era where money doesn't exist (post scarcity) and there'd be no reason to cut corners. The idea of "ccheaper to produce" woudln't even factor in.

To be fair, how else are you going to get steak on every other planet humanity goes to? Are you gonna make cow farms on every world?
Counter observation to my own point, how is this synth meat gonna be on every world, unless they can make it on the individual level? Is there gonna be interplanetary food delivery? It seems weird that different world will all have the same brands of food across them all, implying constant supply lines and food deliveries across the galaxy when it would be easier for each planet to have its own ecosystem?

Assuming we find planets that can sustain our biology we terraform and grow things that grow on Earth. Any other sapients we kill off. We do that now, entire rainforests get mowed down for farms and suburbs. Do you know how much of the USA was forests and swamps before we collectively said “frick all of that?”

        Anonymous

Nowadays we cry about literally not being able to produce lumber long and wide enough to sustain all the cultural buildings because all the old-growth forests have been chopped down

        Anonymous

Except here on earth we did a little of column A (introducing the shit we like and grew up around) and little of column B (taking the stuff in the new place to see if it's something we can grow up around) with regards to "terraforming". For example, you'd have to be an idiot to think no American ever ate buffalo because their British great grandpappy never even knew what the frick a buffalo is over in jolly old England.

      Interstellar logistics will handle it.
There will be agriworlds where cows are grown in quantities enough to feed entire planets.
Plus they can just fast travel.

Like it's weird that people have questions like these when the answer becomes really obvious when you don't have to answer questions like

          Anonymous

Is maintaining cow world and delivering it's product all over the galaxy more efficient than building meat labs on the planets that have human populations?

            Anonymous

If you have a good logistical network it might work since you can have entire worlds specialized in their respective roles like a manufacturing or commerce planet. The costs will start going up if the shipments run late or get attacked by pirategays. Also rampant famine when the entire show collapses on itself.
