Only played the first two, surprisingly fun games and with some decent difficulty. I think Ganker maligned them as braindead easy square mashers but they're a good time.
>I think Ganker maligned them as braindead easy square mashers
morons.
Square square square square
Game sucks, play Ninja Gaiden: Black instead.

Good thing NG is for sophisticated people, such as yourself. Think you'll finish it some day?
Nintendo games usually, but that has to do with board demographics. God of War is Western, from Sony, on PlayStation, that's a triple whammy. It's not the best game on the console, but it's a fun time and surprisingly well designed.
I disagree anon, I see Nintendo games on Ganker maligned as hard as any other. It even bleeds into /vr/ what with "Zelda 2 is the only good Zelda game" and the like.
I agree anon. (unironically).
Saying you don't like a single Nintendo game on that board will draw in the worst kinds of people possible.
Say you don't like a Sony game is different. Most ask "which one?" and if you're badmouthing a nuSony game, you get different reactions, but an older Sony game, its heated.
Difference with Nintendo is that you aren't allowed to badmouth a single 'one' of their games, no matter their generation.

*ironically (or do i mean unironically? idk, point being i agree with your point).
Honestly Ganker flip flops hard. They'll bend over backwards to defend the QTEs in RE4 that have a lot of press certain buttons or die, then tear up God of War for QTEs even if some amount of them are optional and they frequently don't cause you to die for failing them.
I think it was one of those “we didn’t know how good we had it” sort of things. There’s a lot of games people complained about back in the day because the standard had become so good that relatively good games were frowned upon. Now with truly awful games being pumped out as the norm, the mediocre games of yesteryear are great in comparison.
Basically, we were used to eating filet mignon and scoffed at a well prepared steak or really good hamburger when offered.
Honestly, I thought about making the McDonald’s comparison, but I don’t think even McDonald’s screws you over as bad as new games. Really, I couldn’t even think of an awful enough food comparison. Like, it would have to be extremely over priced, taste awful, and leave you completely unsatisfied… there would also have to be overpriced condiments.
I'm a DMCgay and I love God Hand, Bayo, NG, W101, Astral Chain, MGR, hell even Automata but GoW is absolutely the most bottom of the barrel braindead of the "cuhrayzee" genre
Just fricking sit down and play it, you moron, and then decide for yourself.
Actually, you know what, no, it's not worth playing. Terrible game, just awful, same as every other game on playstation, same as every other game on japanese console, same as every other videogame.
Just stay away, or better yet, go on youtube and watch the review of the game, it's the same as playing but you get to laugh and learn the right opinion, all in 10 minutes or so,
What's your problem you're just a cat what do you know!
Only played the first two, surprisingly fun games and with some decent difficulty. I think Ganker maligned them as braindead easy square mashers but they're a good time.
Might give it a go I have a huge backlog of games I never played for the emulator.
They're fun and start flashy but evolve into proper challenges and solid level design. Very polished, originally trying it I felt the opening was lame but keeping on and digging in the game becomes much more fun once it shows you its structure instead of trying to just look flashy. By the end of level 1 you shouls have a good taste for it and probably want more.
I recently finished the original trilogy. (first time playing)
Here are my thoughts: >one of the greatest series of all time (but not GoW 4) >combat is extremely fun and the hits have a lot of speed and weight >there's a wide variety of locations, a lot of them with a sense of grandness, like the steeds of time and the labyrinth >you MUST play in order: 1, then 2, then 3 >if you play an older game after a newer game, it'll feel dated, due to the games objectively improving with each iteration (in terms of traversal and movesets) >I found it weird at first how you can't move the camera, but that is actually perfect for this genre; you want the camera moved away so that you can see the entire action, and don't have to micro-manage its movements >check every nook and cranny for chests >there are "uber chests" in GoW 2; I suggest you look up their locations, because one of them requires you to go back to an area you finished already, which I think is bullshit >to traverse areas quickly, use the roll and cancel with square to do another roll, and repeat. >if you play 3, make sure to use the L1+O move a lot, and the "grab then ram" move (I think O then square) >don't be ashamed to use save states when climbing up the turbo aids blade columns in Hades >weapons/magic to prioritize: Your chain blades in each game, Poseidon's rage in 1, Cronos' rage in 2 >learn to play defensively and dodge, especially after you get the golden fleece in 2 (available in 3 as well), which gives you a parry/counter move
>I have a huge backlog of games I never played for the emulator
So do I, but GoW SHOULD BE YOUR PRIORTY.
You cannot fricking die without playing these games.
Based.
Hundreds of youtube videos exist about the subject and 10 minutes to download the iso and setup the emulator, but a schizo still need to make a "is X worth playing" thread.
I mean, if a gaming person didn't play this masterpiece back then, the person is 100% a schizo anyway.

God forbid we discuss a retro video game on the retro video game board. Let’s go back to flaming console wars that ended two decades ago instead.
They're great action games with awesome setpieces, but be ready for some rawr I'm very manly edge cringe shit.
I wish we could go back to a time where you could unironically enjoy some B Movie schlock without obsessing over what may be perceived as “cringe” by terminally online losers on Twitter and Rèddit.
what you don't like hearing Atreus screaming in your ears as you get rekt by the same generic mini-boss zombie for the 41356464th time for not having used the small window the game allows you to use just in pace like it was dance-dance revolution??? oh and it's your fault you should have used the good armor with the good runes and wait til you were higher stat jdbnaeizbhfaeifeajuibrfiubrafi
this game infuriates me in so many ways...
art direction is legendary tho.
I love 1 and 2. 1 is a bit rough but solid. Some areas were def not play tested. The clone section is a nightmare on the hardest difficulty. 2, I adore. Just an upgrade in so many ways. I would certainly say they are worth your time if you like the genre.
1 has fewer but (generally) better bosses, the level design is better (Temple of Pandora is probably the best setpiece in the franchise), and the story is better and gives Kratos a more nuanced/emotional characterization.
Sure. They're enjoyable games, not masterpieces but solid experiences. Good presentation, fairly satisfying combat, has some puzzles and platforming mixed in (of varying quality), and the story is entertaining.
I would not bother with the PSP games or Ascension, they're not outright shit but they will probably make you sick of the formula.
mashing a button to slam some guys head in a door until it's flattened after he's all wienery saying you're not a god anymore, I don't have to be afraid of you! was pretty hilarious
I played the spiritual successor "Dante's Inferno", it was great. The creators of Dante's Inferno also made Dead Space, it sucks the series ended on a cliffhanger.
Yeah they're fun, I like em. Don't go in expecting Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden or you'll be sorely disappointed. They're just fun action games, the combat is nice and visceral, cool set-pieces, good pacing, Kratos is a memorable character etc. I prefer 1 to 2 because it really feels like this fricking epic self-contained journey.
I played through all the games last year, including the PSP games. I really wish I hadn't because I don't remember shit from any of them outside of a few random events. it was basically binge watching a soap opera.
yes they are fantastic and as deep as NGB or DMC if you play on the harder difficulties. Also from a time when games were allowed to be based-- has breasts and lots of fricking
yes, but stop after Ghost of Sparta, the other games after GoS suck.
You won't stop, of course, you want to see how it ends with 3. so if you do play 3, stop after 3, like seriously stop. You're setting yourself up for even more disappointment.
I can understand being disappointed with 3's story (once Pandora is introduced it goes downhill) but the gameplay is a significant improvement over the previous games. Higher-tier enemies are actually enjoyable to fight and have multiple ways to beat them (instead of just the parry/dodge spam of previous games), there's 4 weapons that can be smoothly switched between on-the-fly, almost every move is viable, there's more mobility options, etc. It actually resembles a competently made action game. Though you have to play the games on a difficulty above normal to really notice this.
Also the presentation is still impressive even today.
For some reason I only like the first one. The second one just isn't as impressive I guess? I feel like gow2 switches locations way too fricking much whereas in GoW1 its pretty condensed into a few areas and feels more like a real adventure
I'd say an adventure OUGHT to have a lot of locations, but I still see where you're coming from.
1 felt like there is a clear goal that you were going straight to. 2 had a lot more detours: "I need to kill Zeus, but to kill Zeus, I need to change my fate, to change my fate I need to kill the sisters of fate, to kill the sisters of fate I-..." and so on.
There also wasn't that strong of a story, for the same reason, and because there weren't any lore drops like 1.
Well the first game does have plenty of locations. Going from the sea, to the city, then making your way to the desert, and then you end up doing the trials.
Not really. It's not a good action game. It's shallow and devoid of well thought out designs. The first game does have a neat structure and decent pacing/story. The second game ramps up and goes harder on the action, while improving very little outside of small, quality of life changes. The third game is unnecessary and sucks. The story is absolute trash and the level design/combat are awful. And it doesn't let you do new game plus because you could skip 90% of the game and that would be funny so can't let you do that.
If you're from South America you'll love the game though. They all do for some reason.
Tried the first one recently but didn't think much of it. Bosses are pretty poop. It's one of those games where the reason gets/got attention for the presentation and huge marketing effort I think.
Only played the first two, surprisingly fun games and with some decent difficulty. I think Ganker maligned them as braindead easy square mashers but they're a good time.

has there ever been a game Ganker hasn't maligned
Nintendo games usually, but that has to do with board demographics. God of War is Western, from Sony, on PlayStation, that's a triple whammy. It's not the best game on the console, but it's a fun time and surprisingly well designed.

So it gets maligned, and then also defended.
SO?
It still gets maligned, jackass.
I haven’t posted on Ganker since like 2013-2014, but it used to be a MASSIVE Sony circle jerk from like 2011-2014.
I think Osu for some reason
Ghost Trick was that until recently.

GoW hate (at least before the series became a TPS dad simulator) basically came 100% from DMC gays crying any time an action game isn't just DMC.
When it comes to action games in general you really need to learn to filter out any complaints that are just obviously from DMC fanboys.
I'm a DMCgay and I love God Hand, Bayo, NG, W101, Astral Chain, MGR, hell even Automata but GoW is absolutely the most bottom of the barrel braindead of the "cuhrayzee" genre
You just confirmed what he said.
see
, NGgays are what you're thinking of, they're some of the most volatile fans you'll ever see
it's because their game is shit so they have to tear down other action games
meant to reply to
but DMCgays didn't complain about ninja gaiden, bayo or other games of the style.
In fact, the square meme is with Ninja Gaiden, not DMC.
Just fricking sit down and play it, you moron, and then decide for yourself.

Imo yes
Series is good, but avoid the nu titles. PS2, 3 and PSP are the only ones worthwhile.

yes, approach them like you might say a Zelda game but with level to level progression.
I like them, the PS4 game is the best though IMO.

They're decent button mashing action games. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible, just something to burn a few hours.
