Good music, amazing aesthetic the town and city design make up for the tedious gameplay and one of the most terrible boring rejected star wars stories.
i didnt get a single star wars vibe while playing it
Did you miss how a young naive blond hero sets out to rescue a princess who has lost her homeland and they enlist the help of a swashbuckling rogue, his feral sidekick, and surprisingly agile airship to fight against the evil empire intent on domination with its corps of villains in dark armor and black helmets and its actual Death Star complete with epin airship battle to take it down?
Zodiac Age is way better, do not play NA PS2 release. Gambit system is good tho, fun to experiment with. Fran, Ashe, and Penelo are some prime Grade A frick meat too
>Okami >God Hand >Final Fantasy XII >Bully >Kingdom Hearts II >Ape Escape 3 >Yakuza >Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories >Valkirie Profile 2: Silmeria >Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
PS2 had a lot of good exclusives in 2006
It will depend on whether or not you like the combat system. The exploration aspect of the game s very satisfying. As people say, go with the Zodiac age version.
It's the seamless combat system. You never feel anxious about going down the wrong path because you're not worried about wasting a bunch of time triggering random encounters. Enemies will appear, die in a few hits, and then your party will heal themselves, all without you having to do anything. No waiting through loading screens or wade through menus every ten steps. Also makes grinding a breeze.
Some people think this is making the game play itself but 99% of random encounters in FF have always been 'press attack a few times to win, maybe cast a spell that it's weak to' anyways so it's not much of a difference. Boss battles still require careful planning and moment-to-moment decision-making.
I've legitimately tried to play through this game like 7 times since release and have never gotten further than around 15 hours. For reference I've played and beaten every ff except 16 and the ds games, and have put multiple thousands of hours into both ffxi and ffxiv. I just can't do it. Maybe it gets better? But its super boring and is there really even a story?
Good music, amazing aesthetic the town and city design make up for the tedious gameplay and one of the most terrible boring rejected star wars stories.
Story isn't great, characters are mostly good, combat/gambit system is fun imo but too one dimensional for the most part, world/aesthetic is fantastic, ost is solid. Not the first FF I'd recommend but it's overhated because homosexuals couldn't stop making "lol it plays itself" gaming webcomic jokes when it came out.
isnt that just a true testament to how good the gambit system is though? theres something very neat about setting things up to play out how you want. its kinda like the tactics system in dragon age origin. gameplay like that is very fun in rpgs but you dont see it very often
No because you just equipped everyone with heavy plate armor and set up gambits for them to spam ultima and curaga. It killed any idea of customization by homogenizing every character
Due to how anyone can use any weapon none of the characters actually use their own weapons in cutscenes but rather stolen weapons or plot device weapons.
My take >combat
Pretty good. When your gambit is working, you feel like a general watching your troops do their thing, but you can still hop in and make them do specific things when needed. >story
So-so. Not a big fan of the narrative theme, but the actual narrative itself is ok. >characters
Probably its weakest point. There’s so much world building and not much time for character development. >lore
Kind of a mess. The occurians are brought in too late in opinion and so rushed. >music
Besides the empire’s theme, it’s probably the weakest soundtrack of the series, with most of it being ambient and lacking the melodies that uematsu is known for >overall
Not bad. Pretty good. A solid 8/10. The earlier games had such distinct characters and a lot of focus on them that I think the sudden switch to a more world focus story drove off some fans. It doesn’t help that the marketing seemed to make it a thing with Vaan and Ashe, especially with the vocal theme. >memorable moments for me
Visiting the plains during the rain and marveling at how the map had changed
>it’s probably the weakest soundtrack of the series
This was a big thing for me too. It's not even bad, just plain forgettable. The Fates is the only theme that stuck with me because it has an actually memorable melody.
I do remember an ESL arguing that it had the best OST in the series though, touting its "variety" as its biggest selling point
>touch a random chest >no notification, no warning, just 4 gil or an apple or potion whatever rng wants it to be >locked out of endgame bow forever
Its fricking moronic, but the AI system was good
all chests in IZJS/TZA either infinitely respawn or have a 100% chance of dropping a specific thing
same with the original actually but the zodiac spear is a specific case and even if you miss the early one there's actually still an infinite number of them in the game
>Oh sweet I went exploring and found this cool new armour! >Oh... I don't have a license to equip it yet >Ah finally time to level up >Now I'm allowed to use this magic spell! If only I knew where it was...
>start new game >immediately go to trial mode >get the diamond armlet from trial one >get karkata from trial 3 >bring both to the main game
love TZA allowing the player to keep things from trial mode
My favorite game ever made. Best story in the series hands-down, best English dub in any game, flexible combat system that allows for lots of cool challenge runs, plenty of great exploration, hunts are fantastic and there are tons of optional bosses, and the soundtrack is some of Sakimoto's best work. It's closer to perfect that any other game I've played.
I enjoyed it as a laid-back offline mmo you could have fun killing an afternoon to explore but by the end I found the game to be a fairly forgettable experience
Yes
Boring gameplay loop in star wars story
That already sounds better than most FF’s nowadays.
i didnt get a single star wars vibe while playing it

That's just a generic fantasy plotline.
Lucas wasn't original at all when making Star Wars.
Yeah okay bro you’re right it’s just total coincidence there are that many overlapping story beats with Star Wars
>wow, this story reminds me of star wars
>said by guy who's only exposure to storytelling is star wars
Name 3 others that just happen to be just like Star Wars and try to do it without baseless strawmanning this time
Hidden Fortress
>farmboy?
>fights emperor?
>sailing in boats?
>starwars invented this
FF4 has more Star Wars references than 12.
Zodiac Age is way better, do not play NA PS2 release. Gambit system is good tho, fun to experiment with. Fran, Ashe, and Penelo are some prime Grade A frick meat too
I heard the zodiac age was too easy? I recently beat the na PS2 version and loved it.
The original version of the game is much much worse than zodiac though
It's good at putting you to sleep
This. Its a shame because they clearly have put effort into the game. But it just doesnt have a soul.
iirc the main heroine is an used good
am not a cuck so...
Yes, but play either the International version on PS2 or Zodiac Age
>Okami
>God Hand
>Final Fantasy XII
>Bully
>Kingdom Hearts II
>Ape Escape 3
>Yakuza
>Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
>Valkirie Profile 2: Silmeria
>Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
PS2 had a lot of good exclusives in 2006
>God of War II
>Persona 3
>Odin Sphere
>Rogue Galaxy
>GrimGrimoire
2007 wasn't bad either. That was the last year it got a couple of exclusives.
one of the babies first jrpg, it's not bad, but far from great.
It will depend on whether or not you like the combat system. The exploration aspect of the game s very satisfying. As people say, go with the Zodiac age version.
It’s the most boring game in the series
13 already exists.
>The exploration aspect of the game s very satisfying
hows that? genuine question

It's the best game in the series.
It's the most divisive game in the series
its so good it plays it self.
>making a build
>buy gambits
>manage gambits
>manage equipment
>lol it plays itself
You should try 13 for “plays itself” feature being the main one.
It's fricking fantastic.
Anyone who dislikes XII got filtered.
yes but homosexual contrarians will state otherwise. if you enjoy hunting for rare drops and rare enemies in a very large, diverse world, then play it
I've legitimately tried to play through this game like 7 times since release and have never gotten further than around 15 hours. >game is so boring even the zodiac age version has a speed up button
Is this shit op not a gay?
Nope
Good music, amazing aesthetic the town and city design make up for the tedious gameplay and one of the most terrible boring rejected star wars stories.
Pretty boring honestly
Story isn't great, characters are mostly good, combat/gambit system is fun imo but too one dimensional for the most part, world/aesthetic is fantastic, ost is solid. Not the first FF I'd recommend but it's overhated because homosexuals couldn't stop making "lol it plays itself" gaming webcomic jokes when it came out.
The hate is deserved it legit does play itself, even XV had more gameplay and that’s literally hold circle to win
You literally don't even play it.
I won 99% of battles and boss fights without pressing a single button.
I'm not even kidding.
isnt that just a true testament to how good the gambit system is though? theres something very neat about setting things up to play out how you want. its kinda like the tactics system in dragon age origin. gameplay like that is very fun in rpgs but you dont see it very often
No because you just equipped everyone with heavy plate armor and set up gambits for them to spam ultima and curaga. It killed any idea of customization by homogenizing every character
Oh, you played the shitty version.
That sucks, but I suspect most people did their first time.
dumbass
You’re right I forgot you had to equip everyone with 2H swords also just in case enemies were magic immune
just wish there was less menu-ing and more hotbar-ing
Yes
Viera feet
this is literally my favorite FF title but sincerely I do prefer the IZJS/TZA versions
It's alright but everyone has a weird lithp. Also, I'm Captain Basch fon Ronsenburg.
Of Dalmathca
it's kino
Due to how anyone can use any weapon none of the characters actually use their own weapons in cutscenes but rather stolen weapons or plot device weapons.
No, it's pretty bad. I dropped it quickly myself. Singleplayer MMO, ugly art, terrible writing.
My take
>combat

Best final Fantasy gaynon
>touch a random chest
>no notification, no warning, just 4 gil or an apple or potion whatever rng wants it to be
>locked out of endgame bow forever
Its fricking moronic, but the AI system was good
Those are overrated. You don’t need them. And to let missing out on one affect how you play the game is just asinine.
all chests in IZJS/TZA either infinitely respawn or have a 100% chance of dropping a specific thing
same with the original actually but the zodiac spear is a specific case and even if you miss the early one there's actually still an infinite number of them in the game
the single biggest improvement to the TZA/IZJS versions is making every weapon type useful
This image has never been attached to a good post.
>Oh sweet I went exploring and found this cool new armour!
>Oh... I don't have a license to equip it yet
>Ah finally time to level up
>Now I'm allowed to use this magic spell! If only I knew where it was...
No one was ever excited about “cool new armor” in a final fantasy game because they never change your gameplay or character appearance
It made the number go up
Also it makes enemy's number go down.
So based….really gets my blood pumping when I replace my diamond armor with crystal armor
One of the worst games I ever tried. My fault for listening to nu-FF-gays.
>start new game
>immediately go to trial mode

love TZA allowing the player to keep things from trial mode

my brother
Exquisite bait
Play the struggle for freedom mod
Sex with Gurdy
>thrust
>just end up pushing her whole body forward instead of pushing into her
I enjoyed it as a laid-back offline mmo you could have fun killing an afternoon to explore but by the end I found the game to be a fairly forgettable experience
Best lore and worldbuilding in the series
Decent story and characters
Mediocre gameplay
I personally love it but it's not to everybody's tastes
Zodiac Age is one of the best JRPGs, just play it.
