Enter button helps you a lot in navigating through menus;
Most straightforward and effective weapon in the beginning is spear;
Rip down curtains and tear them into rags and try to make hat or balaclava, thus you level up sewing skill to fix your clothes easily;
Fight only one zombie at time.
This is basically you need to know about surviving Day One, I advise you to look around online for more guides.
The game is piss easy. Just get a crowbar and run through a neighborhood looting food. If things get hairy just run behind a car or jump through a window. Don't be afraid to sleep/study in houses either, even if you are surrounded by zombies.
It's great up until you game the system. It's borderline impossible to lose once you get a mobile base setup with all the accessories.
night raids. Zombies are basically blind at night. If you stay crouched, and avoid making to much noise, it's easy loot.

Zomboid did storage right, just bags you easily move things through. Clothing in CDDA should all be one "Clothing" storage slot, not pockets for every pair of pants, hoody, front of your polo shirt, etc. and you have to press 2 dozen keys while staring at a wall of text to move a lighter from one pocket to another
