I'm playing FFT (on duckstation, kys if you prefer the butchered WotL translation and slowdown) for like the third time in my life. I was softlocked once in a dungeon and filtered once somewhere in chapter 3 and quit playing years ago. Started the game again on a whim this weekend and couldn't put it down, I'm now midway through chapter 4 and what in the frick is someone supposed to play after this? Every other SRPG is complete dogshit in comparison. Disgaea could never. Triangle Strategy? kys. The Banner Saga? LMFAO.

That seems to be what turns off oldgays but as a counterpoint you get a good variety of classes within the cast (including pretty wacky shit or different takes on stock archetypes). I love FFT and was blown away when I played it but TriStrat hits even higher levels in terms of writing and especially the tactical gameplay. The maps are generally excellent and incentivize real time board control and playing to an objective (ie actual tactics) instead of just bum rushing or turtling. There’s a map in Chapter 9 that filters everyone but it’s so so good because you’re dealt a shit hand and have to figure out how to play out the hole you’re in by taking certain parts of the map as a foothold

What’s the issue? The racism angle is done well because the racism exists to justify economic exploitation (and has an air of realism to it as a result). Morality ending is great because you pay the price wanting to play the hero and one of the most moral characters for the story in Frederica ends up getting Serenoa to sacrifice the many for the few in a great moment of irony. I think it’s pretty good.
I loved the job system in fft and it’s probably one of the best game design decisions ever. I think TriStrat’s system works too though and it’s never been a dealbreaker for me. The tradeoff is that the game ends up being more challenging and even the broken strats require a bit more game knowledge.

the issue is frederica has you killed to save people she didn't even know. she made you forsake your own people in the process. she grew up in a castle with a privileged lifestyle except every now and then her brother and sister said mean things to her, but actually she's just like all of these slaves. it's like if you married oprah winfrey and she tells you to save all the blacks in detroit or she's gonna divorce you because she just happens to be black too.
She relates to them on a personal level because she belongs to the same ethnic group and lives in a world where those in that ethnic group are treated and perceived a certain way. On a moral level, ie what values she actually holds (which remain consistent on non-Roselle issues), she finds the Roselle’s exploitation deplorable, with her own identity and the stories passed down from her mother only serving to amplify this. Identity politics is obviously shallow in and of itself and yet people subscribe to it anyways because of tribalism and social forces. She doesn’t consider herself opressed but she’s an empathetic person in general with a real connection to the Roselle (not only in appearance but through Orlaea). The biggest significance of her nobility and marriage to Serenoa isn’t that she’s detached from the Roselle’s situation, it’s that she has the power to change it. The 3 regular endings are extremely narratively important and the Morality is about more than Serenoa being pussywhipped as I said above
yeah don't get me wrong, i had a good time with TS and enjoyed it a lot but i don't like being "forced" into using specific characters instead of training up ones that i like and cross classing them into monsters. although to be fair certain other games do have an issue with making some story characters way too strong as well if they give them unique abilities. you know who i'm talking about.
the one positive about the way TS di it is that it prevents class stacking which does require a bit more strategy than stacking archers and mages. having anna go around stealthing as a decoy to get enemies in place for the ranged characters to attack is a bit more in depth than just stacking all ranged characters and nuking everything before it reaches you. when you can't fill the entire team with archers and mages, you have to change things up a bit.
I like this actually I think units should be overwhelmmingly unique I hate this this aspect of nu-fe where units are becoming more samey

psp version has a slowdown on animations that is unbearable if you've played the original, it also un-syncs the sound effects from the attack animations. I also fricking hate the translation

Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are worth checking out. Just emulate them (Dolphin works well) since trying to buy them is fricking stupid currently.
They are a solid duology that forgoes the fricking cancerous dating simulator/life sim anime bullshit of the newer games, but not fricking miserable to play like the older games in the series. They have some similar themes to FFT in the sense that there are more than 2 nations at war, follow a band of heroes trying to do the right thing, and ultimately fight god.

you can tell it's hard or lunatic because the samurai has 15 STR and he also doesn't have quick draw on normal
also i made that webm, that's base shura with str/spd tonic, azura dance, and haitaka/laslow rallies. he doesn't even need those if you put him next to camilla or give him a promoted keaton/berserker pairup or give him a forged bow

Never bring an actual calculator into battle, just run them through a few errands for jp and use them as a black mage secondary skill. They're already horrifically overpowered with just a couple of calculator skills.

Chaos Seed
It and Final Fantasy Tactics have a great deal of depth to their mechanics, so it's the only game I ever played that managed to scratch that FFT itch. The Sega Saturn version of Chaos Seed even comes with video tutorials cause the game has so much going on with its Feng Shui (you can play it for hundreds of hours and still learn new ways to do better.
