Didn't like IV either until I played the DS version. Blame whoever thought US players needed the entire game to be dumbed down.

Slow as piss combat, terrible character customization system with abilities being tied directly to gear you outgrow long before you get the ability, terrible characters, terrible story, good OST but every FF game has a good OST, I have never and will never understand why so many people suck 9s wiener other than

5, 7, 8, 10, 13, 15 all have much better party cohesion.
Half of the party in 9 fricks off and is of no use to the story other than their tiny little 20 minute segment, most of them get next to no character development, and every single one of them (other than vivi) is a cliche as frick tropes based on their character archtype.
You're free to like it, but don't insult the actual good characters in the series by saying that 9 has the best party.

The remake does a good job of showing how bullshit this is. Barret is is obviously based, but Cloud is a fricking fun killer and every vegana on the team has no personality outside of slurping his wiener. Cait Sith isn't a real character, Red 13 and Vincent don't have personalities, and Cid was only based because he abused his wife, which is obviously being retconned in the remake.
Freya > Cloud's manic pixie dream harem, Steiner and Zidane constantly bickering is more fun then Barret screaming swears at Cloud's unresponsive ass, and Quina is a better pet monster team member then Cait Sith, whom simply should've been a summon because he quite literally doesn't actually qualify as a character

I liked the whole coming of age story, Garnet cutting her hair to signify that. It’s a good FF story despite some silly mechanics

Ironically, it’s probably the most properly rated game in history. Take everything about the previous games, make it better, add a cool story, that’s ff6 in a nutshell. Very excellent game

Zidane was a refreshing change from a brooding MC, also a playful rogue type. To me, Garnet wasn't all that different from Rinoa and people absolute hate her. Steiner was tolerable, Vivi was inoffensive but you could see his arc coming since the start of the game because Sakaguchi forgot how to be subtle. Eiko was your common bratty lonely kid, nothing interesting. Freya, Quina, and Amarant had some quirks, but nothing that left any impression on me.
The most overrated is FF8 for being a desperate knockoff of 7.

The game tries to be an ensemble cast with no true main protagonist but in the end all that does is make no one in particularly well developed. Also its pretty clear some character are more main character than others.
