Is this the most reactive RPG?

Is this the most reactive RPG? Every dialogue choice you make and each of your decisions affect future outcomes in the game and your relationships with the characters in a meaningful way.

It's a shame no one has copied the formula but I imagine a game like this would be a b***h to develop. I saw the design docs for it and they were a spaghettified mess of branching outcomes.

    >Is this the most reactive RPG?
Dialogue choices make the player react, they are not reactive. Reactive is like if I cast grease on steps enemies slip and fall down them, this is the game reacting to the player.

You're talking about a game's mechancis being reactive vs it's narrative being reactive.

Stealth + Pistol is the strongest way to kill (or tranq) basic enemies. Pistol by itself is also the best boss killing build. It's very OP.
It's not great for long distance sniping until very high skill in pistol though. AR + subsonic rounds will be more like a sniper rifle. Or with other ammo if you don't care about stealth I guess.
Honestly as long as you have a way to deal damage that isn't the shotgun, you shouldn't have much problem. It's not a terribly difficult game.

It's the Dragon Age 2 of the Mass Effect series, except it was polished enough and third person shooters were still popular enough for people to give it a pass.

It began the trend of stripping out the RPG elements that Bioware used to be known for.

Alpha Protocol is actually more in line with how the original Mass Effect played. Both of them were good games, but they struggled with getting the RPG and shooter elements to gel together. Mass Effect 2's "solution" was to ditch as much of the RPG elements possible and be an "Action-RPG" instead.

Mass Effect 2 is great. Mass Effect 2 is the best cover shooter ever made. I'd consider it a third person shooter with RPG mechanics, though. It doesn't go on my list of best RPGs. I wouldn't really get offended if someone called it an RPG, though. That's kind of like calling Dynasty Warriors an RPG just because your guys gain levels and can be customized, though. It isn't one.

It's actually bad if you compare it to cover shooters that aren't RPGs.

              >Mass Effect 2 is the best cover shooter ever made.

That's the problem though. The Mass Effect was always meant to be a Space Opera RPG with shooter elements, especially since RPGs were Bioware's bread and butter, and both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect proved that the RPG stuff was what people wanted.

For some reason, they steadily ditched the RPG elements they were good at for the shooter elements they only had practice with with Mass Effect.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 are passable at shooters, but they're mediocre RPGs.

Other than being able to do silly stuff like an infinitely firing gun or one shot kill death cannon, which are certainly fun, what RPG stuff does 1 do better? All the storytelling is miles better in 2.

Dunno man. Dialogue consists of characters standing motionless, awkwardly delivering some of the worst lines I've ever heard. Stiff, dull, and shallow is how I'd describe it.
2 has a grittier, realer feeling world. 1 has a bit of atmosphere 2 is missing, and better music, but the storytelling is dreadful.

Deus Ex and System Shock are immersive sim. I really like those games they would be God Tier if it wasn't for the fact that they are simply: Not a RPG. 🙂

Mass Effect 3 is a good game for sure, its just that ending that sucked, but the gameplay and the rest of the package was pretty solid.

Yeah VTMB has immersive sim elements and i still put it in RPG because its more RPG than immersive sim.
Thief for example has nothing RPG about it, and its a pure immersive sim stealth game.
SS2 is an immersive sim horror game
Deus Ex is the only one where you can do some arguments, but after i did many arguments i concluded it better stay in immersive sim, the game doesnt have leveling and rpg stats aside from perks and thats exactly like SS2 and Prey.

No need to be worried though Immersive sim is probably the best genre in gaming, there is no shame of being God Tier immersive sim, thats like the best of the best lol.

          those genres aren't mutally exclusive

If we include any game with RPG elements then we will need to put God of War and Horizon and the new AC here, which makes things bloated. I rather differentiate, your point is true though.

Except the story is terrible and has a shit ending that ignores your choices and the combat is atrocious and only viable if you spec into pistol and it's "freeze time and shoot bosses 30x at triple the damage" perk. Aside from that though ... wait I'm right. It's NOT better than Mass Effect.

Alpha Protocol does a great deal of reactivity but the dialogue system itself and the overall amount of choice is fairly limited. This idea of doing three personality archetypes combined with animated and fully voiced dialogue can lead to the character becoming schizophrenic if the player does not choose to play a one-sided character, which in turn renders the entire concept of choice and role playing obsolete. Future games can learn from AP how to create a great deal of reactivity with limited assets. AP mostly achieves reactivity by shifting player allegiances around, having the player visit the same locations but at times from different insertion points, with different allies, accomplishing different objectives, adding a lot of replayability at little cost. The game is masterfully made in that regard. I also liked the character design, which was unique but not completely over the top.

I love this game so much bros. I know it's broken, but I don't give a shit. It's a fun romp with a lot of replayability, I really think Obsidian should give this style another go. It was ahead of its time.
