It had large “open world” environments at high fidelity. They were of course partitioned environments, but bigger than HL2 and D3 for sure. The tropical environment really stood out from the apocalyptic settings of HL2 and D3 as well. All games were showcasing the same features though, and all three were mindblowing because of it. I was the most impressed with Far Cry 1 though, even if it was merely artistic choices.
I would play 1 and 2 if they updated the graphics and voice acting (especially 2 all the voices seem too bland and unenthusiastic) Other than that I did enjoy the weapon degradation and fire.
Farcry always felt like one of those games that should be more fun than it is. It's got all the right ideas, but it's not that fun to play.
I don't think I even beat it. I got to the mutant part and was like "nah, that's okay".
Out of that era of super hyped shooters, maybe the weakest one. HL2, Doom 3, Fear, those are probably all better.
I'd sooner replay XIII too.
they're the best far cry games, instincts anyway. I've played 1-3 and that tron far cry. honestly wish instincts was remastered or at least ported to PC, it's that good. very few companies can get open world shooters done correctly, ubisoft is not one of them. far cry greatly benefits from linearity.
Oh man, as a big fan of Commando (1985) I loved FC1, it was like a cool homage to the cheesy action movies of the 80s/90s. Good times.
I never got hooked on the other games.
Yes. It's the only game in the series developed by Crytek and it's the only one that isn't open world. Don't bother with the open world slop titles. They're ass.
3 did open world very well, that later titles rehashed and diluted that mindlessly, making the formula extremely stale, isn't its fault. Ubisoft have in very large part been spinning their wheels since then.
Compare a bit to how the very first Call Of Duty from back in the day was actually a pretty good shooter, but that the series as a whole became extremely formulaic and mindnumbing as it went, today representing the ultimate in blandness.
3 genuinely improved upon the formula of 2 and had some clever story stuff going on, even if there was all this mindless collectible hunting. Every game afterwards just copied it, which is very much par for the course for Ubisoft.
I want to like Far Cry but the AI being able to casually snipe me from miles away while I can't see shit gets old. The monsters were kinda cool? I traded my boxed copy for a loose N64 base system and the N64 for a PSP. No regrets.
Yeah, especially the water in FCIII.
You'd think for a tropic island game they try to make it have realistic colour and not look like Gatorade.
it's ok I just hate how snipers are like the only worthwhile gun in that game, shotguns are utterly useless and pistols even more so.
Snipers are good but the least exciting way to play the game. Getting in close and counter-flanking people trying to flank you in urban areas is the most excitement you can get in this game.
The first pump shotgun is actually quite viable, it kills in one or two shots at fair distance and you can hold your aim ahead of a strafing merc and shoot when he crosses your aim, which is hard to do effectively with other guns.
Pistols have pinpoint accuracy for sniping people in the head, and just enough ammo to deal with one guy if you get blindsided after your sniped someone. Every merc drops pistol ammo.
Far Cry 2 has a top-notch atmosphere, great gun models and animations but also one of the worst gunplay in the whole series.
Opposite is true.
FCII guns are poorly modeled and animated, but the combat is best in the series.
I love how aggressive and tactical the mercs are; how quickly you get surrounded and killed if you don't stay on top of the situation; how you can't just dispatch an enemy with a doubletap of the weakest pistol in the game like in later FCs.
>dispatch an enemy with a doubletap
I actually really like how unspongey the enemies in 3 and 4 are (for the most part). It feels right that you shoot someone and they just fricking die.
The whole Far Cry series is a solid B+. Its never mind blowing, not really even impressive. But I will never be upset about receiving a Far Cry game as a gift either. They get points from me for being willing to try settings other devs wont. I thought the cave man setting was pretty wild.
For me it is. Far Cry 2 had the potential to beat it for me, but it's undermined by a few baffling design choices. The rest of the series are generic Ubisoft open world games.
I had to choose between playing Far Cry 2 and another game, but I think I'll give FC2 another try once I finish what I'm playing now. It's a neat game, even if I dislike open world games.
>The frick, anon.
I don't care much for PC gaming, strangely. If the game is PC exclusive, I'll play it on there but I prefer consoles overall. Especially if I'm paying money for a game - which would not be the case in this situation.
Pic related was great in its time, but not because it was a good game. It had a vibrant map making community that took advantage of the robust map editor to create fun puzzle/course maps. Almost every lobby was a course map of some kind with everyone working together to complete it. There were some extremely talented mapmakers who did things you never could have imagined with the map editor. I miss those lobbies and no game has ever done anything like this since that I have seen.
>2 >segmented health with weird animations to partially heal one of the segments at low health >swim underwater and start draining your health due to drowning >breathe infinitely by stopping every 10 seconds to snap your fingers back into place, cauterize a wound, dig a bullet out of your arm with a knife, etc.
I laff everytim
I hate this zoomer revisionism that FC2 is a good game. It wasn't. It was massively underwhelming with what they promised, and the game was repetitive as frick.
yeah
rest of series suffers from ubisoftism
The first 3 games are fine
2 is peak
Mindblowing in 2004. The AI is so fricking shit though.
1 was more impressive for the time, but 2 is great, especially since it was the only game brave enough to this day to have your rifle wear down.
>mindblowing in 2004
Why? I remember reviews being excellent for it but I don’t even understand what the game did that HL2/Doom3 didn’t
I've never played this game, but that screenshot looks beautiful. I love tropical environments.
I would play 1 and 2 if they updated the graphics and voice acting (especially 2 all the voices seem too bland and unenthusiastic) Other than that I did enjoy the weapon degradation and fire.
>The AI is so fricking shit though.
you played with an patch that fricks up the AI. We go over this every thread. The actual game's AI is fine
Stalker
On different timeline far cry took different direction and went for grim realism.
I still want to see not far cry 2 mercenary simulator
Farcry always felt like one of those games that should be more fun than it is. It's got all the right ideas, but it's not that fun to play.

What about the two Xbox exclusive games?
they're the best far cry games, instincts anyway. I've played 1-3 and that tron far cry. honestly wish instincts was remastered or at least ported to PC, it's that good. very few companies can get open world shooters done correctly, ubisoft is not one of them. far cry greatly benefits from linearity.
Idk but that cover was bullshit, there is no Mp5 Scoped in the game.
It was in the Classic version
Oh man, as a big fan of Commando (1985) I loved FC1, it was like a cool homage to the cheesy action movies of the 80s/90s. Good times.
I never got hooked on the other games.
Is that the movie where Arnold in one scene wears a yellow speedo on a boat?
Yep
No I prefer 2, Blood Dragon and 3 more
Far Cry 1 is a shitty techdemo nothing else
Xbox version was miles better
there are no bad Far Cry games. even the caveman one is good
New Dawn and 6 were garbage
YOUR ASS IS GRASS
3 and 4 are enjoyable, and I think that counts for something.
You can ride an elephant while shooting an MG42 in Fc4. How cool is that
Extremely cool. You can also one-hand a grenade launcher while flying an autogyro.
i liked 3 a LOT, one of my favorites. How's 1 and 2 if I liked 3?
4 added a lot of cool toys, but I found myself disappointed in the missions, exploration, worldmap, and story. The game just did not click for me.
Yeah, but you can beat it in 5 minutes though which is neat.
Yes, also Crysis 1
This game was just a Crysis prototype though, more of a tech demo, it wasn't very fun to play due to the aimbot AI.
only sixth gen ones are good
I only like 2 and 5.
Pretty sure I'm crossing into schizoid realm when I talk about 5, but whatever.
Aside from visuals 1 was pretty unremarkable.
3 and 4. 4 is very underrated and imo did nothing but improve on 3 (well maybe not story wise but i'd say pagan min was a worthy vaas successor)
2 and Blood Dragon.

Far Cry 1 water still looks impressive today and even better that the water in 3 and 4.
Yeah, especially the water in FCIII.

Pirate it on PC.

Far Cry is shit and was never good
Let me guess...your favourite game is Far Cry: The Dildo Dragon, right?
Alf, pls.
far cry was good until blood dragon then it's turned into the same copy/paste shit
Who gave Alec Bladwind a gun?
Instincts
Instincts: Evolution
2
Blood Dragon
The only good Far Cry games, all for very different reasons.
There are no good FC games

I actually like the segmented health system.

Yes. Far Cry 2 is boring, repetitive shit.
