Is this the worst fictional universe you could live in?

Is this the worst fictional universe you could live in? You either get nuked outright, torn apart by mutants, killed or raped or enslaved by raiders, annexed by some new form of government or struggling to meet basic needs in a hellhole with depleted resources. There is no in-between.

Naw. Scorn's world is far worse.

It's actually one of the better ones that initially look like they might be hell. It's very much POST apoc. All those threats exist, but there is also the potential to live in a comfy place like the NCR core region which is basically like living in the modern day but with robot butlers and no internet. There are millions of people live normal lives across the wasteland. Big and nasty events tend to be decades or even centuries apart and typically occur in different regions, so it's not like you'll be caught up in a 'Main Quest' event or anything.

40k or one of the literal hells like Scorn a zombie apoc game as mentioned earlier are far worse.

At least Fallout has a few locations that bring hope like the Vegas Strip, New Reno, Diamond City, etc.

40k is just bleak all the way through

40k universe, not even a contest.

moron take. The galaxy is enormous and heavily populated by humans from edge to edge in 40k. Most people live at least half decent lives, many live good lives.
Fallout is a nuclear apocalypse with only extremely small and sparse areas of relative civilization.

Calm thine breasts. Give us some examples, it's not like 40k media goes out of its way to show people living comfortable lives given the tagline. For me the metaphysics alone mean I wouldn't want to exist in the 40k setting.

Maybe in the first game, that one was extremely bleak and had almost zero moments of happiness or fun, everyone was using you and out to get you, but from the second game forwards there were at least somethings to live for and little pockets of true leisure.

There's Vault City where if you were a citizen you were well protected and had a purpose. Next best place to be would be the NCR even though they have problems with corruption and lawlessness.

    why is that bad

Because all government is inherently bad and taxation is theft. An ideal world is anarcho-capitalist in nature.

It feels bleak and horrific in 1 and 2, starts to pick up a bit when civilization in parts of the Southwest and West adopt Pre-War customs and technology. Then again we also know nothing about other parts of the US but hopefully raiding isn't that prevalent since it isn't sustainable and you just make enemies who at some point WILL form an actual community.

Just with The Flood. The Covenant is civilized and can at least be diplomatic or reasonable. Many even wanted humanity to join.

Did you even play the games, anon? They were on a full genocidal warpath and exterminated dozens of human-occupied planets. It wasn't until the events of 2/3 that stopped being the case.

it only sucks unless you're a protagonist

some people say that because the chosen one and the courier started out in the wasteland, that made them stronger protagonists, but I disagree
the fallout protags that actually made sense were VD, LW, and SS, because they started in a vault (or better) and were thus a lot healthier
the courier was GIVEN a pipboy, which means that apparently vats is just something anyone can use

vats doesnt exist in-lore, or rather it didnt until bethesda started being moronic as usual
vats was just a gameplay contrivance meant to hearken back to the turn based gameplay/aimed shots of the isometric titles, in fact if you take the fast shot trait, you cant even make aimed shots at all.
4 introduces some goofy tidbit in the loading screen about how VATS is an ancient combat technology whose origins are lost to time and then in 76 there's some stupid note in a terminal about how if you're too drunk to shoot, let vats aim for you so i guess vats is real now, and so are hp bars and subtitles.
