Yeah honestly if anyone tells you one of his favorite games is a 90s RPG (western or japanese, it doesn't matter) you can safely ignore that person's input about what makes for a good videogame. They have an eye and ear for style, but that's it. Almost all of them are pure trash on a gameplay perspective and devs knew this hence the focus on the form rather than the game.
They’re actually the worst ones.
Later titles in both franchises vastly improved the controls and mechanics.
The only later title that felt like a downgrade was Harmony of Dissonance.
No one cares about how balanced the mechanics are, what matters is the overall package, all the GBA Castlevania games sound and kinda look like trash, the NDS titles vary in quality with PoR being the best one because you know it actually has a soundtrack that can compare.
Next you are gonna bring up trash like Hollow Knight or whatever garbage FOTM has come out of Steam.
i do not understand circle of the moon fans
it plays like complete shit, is basically a straight line, is an obvious downgrade in every way from sotn, is obviously blander and worse than the games after it, has godawful controls, the most poorly conceived and obnoxious magic system in any game, and it's glitchy to the point of almost falling apart at all times
Is this the worst game to be considered an all-time classic? Or MGS1?
Lets be 100% real here, cv, zelda, snes jrpgs, silent hill. All have their merits.
Half life has NONE >bad overall levels >no bgm >very stretched out boring campaign, any set pieces are a fricking drag to deal with >cardboard cutout protag in the era we had Duke, Lo wang, NOLF Girl >"narrative" compared to other shooters which amounts to the tram ride, you seeing non hostile scientists in the first 10 minutes and gman occasionally. Also both system shock absolutely BTFOs Half lifes narrative attempt >2's obsession with stack the brick puzzles(This aged terribly)
Half life is a shooter for people who dont like what made other 90's shooters so fun
MGS1 is easily one of the worst, if not the worst game to ever exist >b-b-but this shitty games like upserman 64 and et!!!!
Yeah, not one other game did what MGS1 and Hideo 'failed Hollywood man' Kojima did
This game is 100% responsible for the absolutely shitty concept of 'le story game'. The entire fricking AAA slop of 'walk for 30 minutes, get 5 minutes of action' is down to this
MGS1 can be beaten in less time than it takes the fricking cutscenes if you're not a shitter.
One was made by a man who literally failed to make a movie so many times he decided 'a video game movie' is what's best
He set out to shit all over video games everywhere because he couldn't make a proper movie
>One was made by a man who literally failed to make a movie
He started as a programmer and back then he even admitted that he wasn't interested in making a movie. The other is a series of RPG for people that don't want to play an RPG.
The worst widely highly regarded game is half life. It’s just so boring. Minimal story, barely any soundtrack, no exploration and very linear, some really poor level designs in some areas. It’s only liked because it spawned counter strike and other mods
Story in a videogame doesn't matter, Half Life certainly had more of a soundtrack than the vast majority of western videogames ever released, linearity is a big sign of a good game and exploration just to see some trees fluttering in the wind is pointless. Having said that i think Half Life is overrated too but its a good game overall nonetheless
>I'm not interested in making a movie >I mean this is only after two decades of trying but I'm really not, I swear
Dude, we get it
Kojima slop is something you worship. There is nothing wrong with being in love with the man who ruined video games forever
If the moviegames of today were even 1/100 as fun and interesting as MGS1 was i'd accept them but alas they are as empty, pointless and soulless as the average collectathon on N64
If the music and the gameplay are fun its with a high probability a fun game, what you could say is that it could have needed more gameplay but what is there is fine.
>western videogames ever released
One western games aren’t as good, 2 no it didn’t look at system shock, doom, banjo kazooie. Plot isn’t necessary when you have a game with lots of setpieces, you probably should try and make it more compelling. Pure corridor linearity sucks, it’s why people hated ff13 for example
Sotn is literally a litmus test on if you're a mouthbreathing moron who's swayed by window dressing. It's only good for it's music and atmosphere, the actual game is fricking horrendous. Add onto the fact that there were like 6+ more metroid style games after this and nearly 5 are direct improvements to gameplay, there's just no reason to dicksuck this game anymore.
SoTNs combat and balancing are pretty bad but the movement is so damn good and deep its a very fun speedrun or challenge run game, which is true of other igavanias sure but none have bat tech
This games solid. Up until inverted castle at least. But they let you see the credits before that if you're not willing to put up with it, which is good.
All games mentioned in this thread are bare minimum fine, and people pretend they're the worse garbage ever with a pseudo snobby critic attitude. Go play more games.
Also the actual answer is GTA as an entire franchise.
I also disagree with people in this thread BUT
GTA is fricking good, even GTAV which is soulless shit is still well made and fun to play.
The actual answer is not even something like TLOU, no. It's unironically any David Cage game and I don't know how you gays still haven't mentioned those
I think the thing that bugs me the most about this game is the inverted castle. It would have been so extremely fricking cool if it was on NES. NES games recycled shit all the time, partly because they needed to. Imagine how badass and clever of a recycle that could have been. But no, they do this shitty recycling in a 2D PS1 game. And everyone praises them for it, even though it's completely unimpressive and doesn't even work as well as the people who claim it does. >Dude, the castle was literally INGENIOUSLY built to be flipped upside down! It's INSANE how they were able to do this!
Play the fricking game zoomie youtube shitter, it's not. You have to use the bat to frick around and fly like every room. There's nothing genius about it.
noob
Secret of Mana is

You sound you have no clue what makes for a good videogame.
if anything, FF10 is a good candidate. SotN is too influential and in itself aesthetic and fun to be considered such
SoTN is still the best metroidvania ever made after Super Metroid
They’re actually the worst ones.

nah thats FF9
Infinitely better than SotN
MGS1 is easily one of the worst, if not the worst game to ever exist

It's ruined gaming forever

Zelda OOT had a lot more walking/riding than MGS
One was made by a man who literally failed to make a movie so many times he decided 'a video game movie' is what's best

FF13 sucks because any FF without Uematsu tends to suck, yes music in games is that important
The music is actually one of the games better points imo for ff13, it’s just not a good game
Sotn is literally a litmus test on if you're a mouthbreathing moron who's swayed by window dressing. It's only good for it's music and atmosphere, the actual game is fricking horrendous. A game is going to be judged on it's sprites and how well you interact with them, and even PoR or Bloodstained don't look or sound as good.
I'm not playing your ZX Spectrum indie games pal
SoTNs combat and balancing are pretty bad but the movement is so damn good and deep its a very fun speedrun or challenge run game, which is true of other igavanias sure but none have bat tech

MGS1 definitely.
It's one of the first movie games out there.
At least SotN doesn't wrestle control out of your hands
I didnt play it until like a decade after it came out and I thought it was great.
Half-Life 1. I nominate Half-Life 1.
Its the only good "metroidvania" so no.
It's OoT

nope, its the only game that is a 10/10 and timeless classic. Its never going to age
