The void lords have defeated the heroes of Azeroth and now the universe is in some sort of quantum flux where you're stuck in a place called "The lobby of the first ones" and you have to complete daily dungeon/raid challenges to defeat them. If Diablo IV is anything to go by, Blizzard is trying innovate a new era of the premium-F2P game, or PF2P. You still have to pay for the game, but it also includes all of the extra monetisation of F2P games.
WoW is actually already a step beyond this, it's PF2P+. Buy the game, buy a subscription to play the game, then the game still sells you boosts, items, and now what's turning out to be their own cosmetic battle pass. They're actually quite clever for implementing the business model slowly, any new game that launched with that as their pitch would be dead in the water immediately.
The problem with implementing that business model slowly is that the players view it as antithetical to the culture of the game. WoW has always had a monthly sub fee but the cash shop stuff was viewed extremely negatively when they started adding it and it probably contributed to a lot of players leaving, and the remaining ones are less likely to buy stuff from the shop because of the negative stigma around it. If they made a new game with cash shop and battle pass monetization from the start that wouldn’t be a problem (unless it failed to attract a large enough playerbase).

Anyway yeah, I remember how much people sucked off the class stories, although some of them were objectively shit compared to others. The story was not as good as people thought it was, but everyone was so fatigued by WoD that it must have seemed like a godsend at the time. Between the Legion class stories and the Suramar campaign, anyway. Everything else, including the Emerald Nightmare, was filler. Argus was also just a fricking waste of a location concept and of characters.
And then there's also the issue where they ended everything on the note of defeating the most iconic boogeyman of the WoW setting in the most dramatic way and they couldn't figure out where to go with the story past that point, so it just slid into the slop that was the BfA story.

I don't think people are fully aware of how rotted out Blizzard is on the inside. There have been waves and waves of layoffs happening for years now. Senior devs have been leaving in droves consistently for over a decade. These people haven't been getting replaced. I'm pretty sure Bobby just wants to see how few people he can employee and still have the company make money. Look at how all the art assets for War 3 Reforged were outsourced. Look at how little Overwatch 2 had to offer. Look at how Classic WoW has basically had no real support for its entire existence.
It's absolutely insane how barebones everything is. I don't really think Blizz is even capable of making games anymore. How much of Diablo 4 was outsourced? I think the future of Blizz is they will be run as an IP resource and you will have other studios that get hired and put in charge of the IP. I think that's the ultimate end game for Kotick. The worse Blizz does the more excuse he has to fire everyone and just put the IP up to be bid on regularly. We'll likely never stop getting Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft games but they'll probably be done entirely by other studios in the future.
So in that regard, something like a WoW 2 could work. It just won't be Blizz in charge of it. They'll get some studio to do it. In that regard it could possibly be saved but the possibility of Blizz themselves saving it is next to zero at this point.

it wasn't. they just are terrible writers that couldn't keep it going properly. they couldn't possibly make the Alliance ever be the bad guys in the ongoing story, so the reason for conflict always had to come from Horde, but they also couldn't make Horde just the evil faction, so the reason was always "the Horde leader has gone insane but the players aren't on their side", like with Garrosh and Sylvanas.
It would've been better if Varian became a bad guy after Garrosh and attacked the Horde during Legion, instead of sacrificing himself.
If Blizzard wants a good story, they'll make Turalyon a bad guy with a "Siege of Stormwind" raid either in the last patch of this expansion or in the next expansion. Angry Night Elves attacking the Undead would also be cool. But the gays that play Alliance probably would be upset if they did that
They also wouldn't properly nerf the ever living shit out of the horde racials as needed to be done. It was the only way the faction numbers were ever going to be corrected. Most people don't want to play horde they played blood elves to be "horde" even so the correct thing to do to fix the faction imbalance was to nerf horde racials into uselessness then when number got to a comfortable split bring them back up to below old levels.
The faction writing in WoW has constantly sucked ass because the writers never figured out how to handle them. They couldn't decide whether the Alliance was absolutely good and the Horde was absolutely evil, or that good/evil was relative, or that both sides are neither good nor evil but acting in their own interests. It's been a mess since Vanilla, but there was at least some cohesion to it in Vanilla. It got fricked in TBC and only got worse from there on out.
Then you also had the player side of things. A majority of Alliancegays, or at least the vocal crowd, decreed that the Alliance are good guys and can never do any wrong in any way so no flaws or no morally ambiguous actions are allowed, while Hordegays swing back and forth between "haha we're evil so we get to do le evil things" and "we good bois we dindu nuffin." BfA in particular was very unsatisfying in those regards.
The game needed to settle on one constant of morality for the two factions and it never could. It needed writers who had the conviction to write interesting faction dynamics and it never had those sorts of writers.

In Vanilla, it should've been that the Alliance wants revenge for what the og Horde did, while Horde is good bois now. Then the Horde gets mad for the revenge and they get revenge against the Alliance. Then the Alliance gets mad and they get revenge. etc etc etc
They still could do that now by having Yrel show up in the next story arc and having Turalyon, the Scarlet Crusade and the Night Elves joining her and attacking the Undead and the Horde. then after that story, the Horde might seek revenge and the cycle continues
It doesn't logically work. The Horde is almost entirely wiped out after WC2. The second the Alliance actually wants to take them out the Horde is done.
Horde story should've been about proving they are worth keeping around. Instead the very first thing they do is support a genocide in Lordaeron.

There shouldn't have been a story focus in the first place. The main conflicts should be players fighting other players.
for technical reasons. the whole code is based on the two factions and rewriting it takes time. the endgoal is to allow everything as cross faction.

I've never and will never play any Finalfantasy game, it's not for me.
Allied Races were an overall shitshow, especially on the Alliance Side, and the devs didn't even try to hide how spiteful they could get.
Allied races should have never happened because they dilute the originals. Have actual new races like ogres or naga or whatever, there's plenty to choose from, but they wanted to phone it in. Also, adding them by the truckload without them having their own starting zones, cities, etc is also detracting from the appeal of playing a new race because it all feel so damn cheap.
There's also the issue of whether the races fit thematically into the game universe. They just completely threw out any respect there had to be for the lore when they made vulpera and more recently these deviant art hermaphroditic looking fetish dragons. The issue isn't that they're foxes, it's that they're furries, same with the dragons.
At least when they retconned the lore of the game with draenei, they attempted to make them look appealing..
I'd say that the Alliance got completely hosed when it came to Allied Races, but the Horde getting Culpera completely offsets that. These furry abominations are the worst thing to ever happen to the game.

Guys, I never played WoW but warcraft 3 was my favourite game and reforge was a mistake that made me still seethe. I'm considering starting WoW just to continue the epic Warcraft 3 saga and see the story resolve at Shadowlands, to enjoy the finale of warcraft 3. Do I have to buy every expansion up to SL or just those I want like Vanilla/Wrath/SL?
