I play shmups with an arcade stick that has built in auto fire and I use it to get 1cc's in the games on retroarch, while using run ahead to get the games down to 1 frame of input lag.
Every PC engine game was autofire capable. If a shmup got a PC engine release it's not cheating, if the dip switch settings had autofire it's not cheating. There's very few shmups that don't have some form of autofire

Yes; anything not part of the game's rules = cheating. SHMUP playing kids used to be able to have a consistent 10-16 shots per second.

I don't think it's cheating but I find that it adds to the enjoyment when you're frantically mashing the button while in a tough situation.

If you think it’s cheating then don’t use it. I use it because mashing the same button over 30,000 times every hour isn’t fun or interesting to me

No videogame is worth the carpal tunnel and reduced controller operational life.
I'm old and have carpal tunnel and I'm going to use turbo and theres nothing you can do to stop me.
It takes skill to shoot fast, and thus using turbo on games that weren't made with it in mind is cheating, but at the end of the day for fellas like
gaming is supposed to be fun, and shouldn't but your health at risk so make the trades where necessary.
I can only play Cotton for 5 minutes without auto fire and my hand hurts too bad to play anymore.
As far as if it’s cheating or not? If it’s not firing any faster than if you mashed it, I’d say that’s fine.
