VR nowadays is just using head mounted displays, motion controls and a headphone at the same time. Social apps like VR Chat and driving/flying games are pretty much the only applications aren't too limited by this kind of set up. Truly immersive VR NEEDS physical feedback.
Real VR is Matrix or Holodeck experience. We're still at least decades away from that.
I don't see VR fading away. The barrier to entry will only get lower as computer processing improves and GPU prices go down. My hope is that ordinary people will never accept having a headset strapped to their face and always consider it to be something that is too "weird", but that it remains popular enough that companies are still willing to develop the hardware for it.

That would be a naïve assumption to make considering how many different ways VR has to improve. Comfort, tech, hardware accessibility, market density. One day VR headsets will all be inexpensive and wireless. Better tech will lead to the factors which cause motion sickness being significantly reduced in severity. More and more games will be made and some among them will push boundaries far beyond what anyone anticipated. It is only a matter of time. Think about how console gaming transformed from 95-05.
