At that time (15 year agos) it was considered as "the MMO for annoyings kids who can't pay for WoW (or any decent MMO)".
Most MMO players hated it because it was too kiddy,the franchise was over-exploited and most Dofus players were 10-12 y/o boys.

Et la plupart des gars que je connais ayant fait une these (en science dure) avaient plus tendance a être des anciens joueurs de WoW que des joueurs de Dofus (qui pour la plupart on fini chomeur, desco ou caissier chez Auchan).

Variant spells Have mage glyphs less off a pain in the ass, for example: >Agressive glyph
Less damage dealt, to everyone inside on a star area >Variant
More melee dmg, to all alies around the target, cast everry turn >Flaming glyph
MP Rape, to everyone in a square area >Variant
Range to all allies in your area, cast every turn
The other elemental glyps are in the same way with different efffects. Did i mention that variants made so that every class can use every element, and that are also viable?

The crafting got slightly less grindy recently, and everybody has crafting skills. I've seen people offer free crafting now. And since you can install crafting stations in your bag for other people to use with your skills, you're guaranteed not to get scammed if you borrow their station.

The game was extremely soulful in 2012, but they ruined it. You can still play it today and have fun with it, but expect to quit at some point due to some bullshit.
To be fair I tried the multi-character thing for a while (me and my gf played 3 characters each to form a full 6 man party) and it was a fun, strategic co-op experience, but that's just not an MMO anymore.
Coding aside what they really wasted their time on was remaking all of the character, enemies, and background sprites from scratch.
Personally I lost interest after the server wipe in the first beta.
Imagine if they had added onto the existing systems instead of being obsessed with remakes. We could've had an insane clusterfrick of content.
I'm also pretty sure they lost parts of the code at some point. Some additions seemed poorly hacked in when I last played.

I might have seen you in beta. I was Anonymous in the beta and guild leader of the second largest guild. I miss Wakfu in beta so much. It truly was a better game.
I was also once charmed by this game and its unique faction system where every faction has a type of resource specialty but also its own ecosystem where keeping every types of resources above X amount gave a faction wide buff to everyone.
This made it so that people from the other 3 factions that came to yours for its unique resource and started to loot everything made your faction lose one if its buff which in turned mobilized the faction to protect them either through voted laws, players applying as Guards being rewarded for winning duels in their faction's territory and kicking them out/jailing them. Since a faction could declare war on others, it could effectively lock them out from certain resources and would need to acquire them through proxy resulting in a very unique, breathing economy.
Until you realize that everyone is multi-boxing. I've seen some absolutely disgusting shit and the devs don't give two fricks about it as long as they get more money from people using multiple accounts. I once defeated an enemy from an enemy nation only to get arrested by his alts that are Guards from my own faction taunting me.
I've seen people making level 1 characters accompany their mains as they go on a looting spree in a faction, destroying their ecosystem. As soon as someone approach, they challenge that player to a duel with a level 1 and then just do nothing with the alt. There's a time limit of 30 secs for each player's rounds in battle, giving them a minimum of 40 seconds to loot everything unhindered while you're stuck in the battle and then put some distance between you and him so he can keep you locked in battle.
Multiboxing and disconnected, uncaring devs ruined a great idea of a game.
I remember myself playing wakfu's beta in french and seeing the environment change a lot. Then being confused after trying the game again 8 years later and not finding any of the stuff that was in the beta

The population is larger than it has ever been before (such recovery is a really rare thing for an MMO). It is fun but you need to subscribe or else it is too grindy.
A good solo "range" class would be an Osamoda.
Can either go support or full on damage with many pets to help you. You can also set your pets on fire for big numbers at the start of their turn (Having a pandawa to position enemies around your pet is a huge plus)
Not him but the late game dungeons pretty much turn into puzzles where mistakes are rewarded with insta-death and where you need top tier gear (very expensive or very tedious to get) lots of grinding to get permanent stat boosts, and very often mandatory classes like sacrier/panda for their positioning abilities and enutrof/xelor for their disabling abilities, not to mention the healers, it wouldn't be much of a problem if every servers weren't infested with bots taking every ressources like a locust swarm.
It's fun but only if you have a large group of friends or guild with diverse classes covering all 4 elements for partying up, however keep in mind that all of the game is balanced around PvP players who constantly whine in the forums to have their favorite class/gear buffed or classes they don't like nerfed.
This made me drop Dofus. Frigost was a nightmare when it came to this. Every dungeon boss there is invulnerable unless you do X or Y thing to make them vulnerable for a couple of turns. Also every battle could take a solid half an hour with how much of a slugfest they are, more than an hour if it's a boss. When I used to play everyone wanted to go grind levels there and things get boring fast when you have to wait like 10 minutes for your turn to come so you can do 100 or 200 damage then wait another 10 minutes so it can be your turn again.
Oh yeah I didn't mention how fricking long some boss battles can get even early in the game, and that's when you don't do the stupid challenges for extra exp and drop rate.
Some dungeons are very unforgiving for melee characters but the devs wisened up and designed the content better. Melee classes are competetive in most cases and even optimal sometimes.
They expanded that feature to tie it to subscriptions, and to keep the game playable with the shrinking playerbase. Now you can either get a subscription that lets you play 3 characters at once or you buy a range of other special helper NPCs that aren't as powerful as player characters.
Dofus was the first MMO I ever subbed to. There will never be anything like prime Flash dofus when every single cell of the game was full of people and going to the city would tank the FPS. Wakfu can suck my dick and so can the frenchies for ruining this IP with failed project after failed project
A lot of it felt flat and a bunch of amazing characters went wasted. Goultard got turned back into Dark Vlad offscreen, more hur dur Amalia drama for nothing, hey Ruel is actually the son of Enutrof and many more out of the blue shit (Adamai killing Tristepin just coz lul or how Oropo is the worst main villain in the series).
Nox > Qilby > Rushu > Trash > Shit > > > Oropo
Watched it in one go, been a fan of all the animations of Ankama (loved the Kerub series and movie and the Ogrest and Nox ones too) so I guess I had high hopes for that season only to get disappointed.
You know, the funniest and saddest part about this movie is that it only cost them like 5 millions to make (I'm not shitting you), and they didn't even make those 5 millions back

This one is because Season 3 and 4 were meant to be the same thing but Netflix's moronic rules meant they had to cut short
A lot of the animation was repeating (Tristepin doing his kamen rider transformation), or swiped straight up from previous seasons, and they kept dumbing down the models compared to the previous seasons too. It also has a dumb plot, half the episodes, and ends in a cliffhanger.
Basically it was half the length, and barely half the quality compared to previous seasons. The dumbing down of the models is the worst, what set apart season 1 the most to me was because it was the first show that used tweening to make it look better instead of cheaper, and they keep dumbing that shit down so they can do "real animation" despite not having the budget for it.

Updates are mostly content and class revamps have been making classes stronger. The game is mechanically better than ever, but it's also grindy as frick for gear. The only real problem is that not enough people play it... which is why this thread exists, I'll bet.
Tto be fair, turn-based and mmo is kind of a bad combination, because the bigger your party is, the less you get to play.

Because you tried to play a group game as a solo player. Dungeons are very easy for 3+ parties.
That's not true anymore. They took the additional hardmode dungeon mechanics and put them into the regular difficulty mode as well. If you enter any dungeon above lvl 100 blind and at the appropriate level you will get shit on by the boss.
The low level dungeons are also a mixed bag now. Picky and sheep dungeon (forgot their name) was doable, but shit like the Royal Tofu boss gets a huge damage buff if any party member uses Wakfu Points, turning him into an unstoppable noob killer.

It's fairly grindy and difficulty is kinda all over the place. Last time I've played it with someone Astrub (newbie location) dungeons were harder than dungeons in nations. It was extremely jarring to struggle for basic set of serviceable gear and then mop the floor with the next few tiers of dungeons. Also at levels 90+ all dungeons start to have "BOSS IS INVULNERABLE UNTIL CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE MET" gimmick and it gets really fricking tiresome to clear them.

It's the next series after wakfu, when the floods get so extreme, the world is only left with a couple islands floating around. Also there's a Waven game coming out and a new TV show that they showed concept art of. Including Elely as a pirate, so maybe she'll be the new main character, who knows.

Did they frick traps recently in Dofus ? It was fine and fun last time I played. Only problem always was that it's slower than other types of gameplay.
I hate gacha and F2P games, but, I think a game similar to Genshin Impact, Action Taimanin or Warframe would be a good format for a Wakfu/Dofus F2P action game.
I wouldnt even go that far. Just make a solid TBS single player or coop game rather than an MMO. Those games always do well, the fact taht its an MMO comes with a lot of peripheral gameplay fascets like grinding and a never ending gameplay loop.

Again Yugo's split personality BS was to make his race playable and honestly a snore. The best part of the World of Twelve was the fact that divinity was based not on power but worshipers. These divinities could have conflicts with those who did not convert, but went more on a Yugo story focus then using Yugo as a focal point to see these conflicts.

There is a whole ass comic that is about how the Brotherhood of the Forgotten was established walking around finding forgotten Demi-gods. It is ass it has no context. The sacrier in the final episodes has a whole ass personality and none of it was given. I dont think they even voiced her. There is a LOT of context lost season 3 due to it being in other media. Season 3 is the weakest for that for sure.

The laws of divinity arent very clear sure. Old Goultard is more interesting, but the clear plot device is he had the Iop God powers and might of never knew it til Wakfu-ish times. Dark Vlad is meant to be this sickening monster who does whatever he wishes and in season 3 they made him into a clown. The old Dofus Goultard and Wakfu Goultard seem almost too different

Ankama has a bad case of doing multi-media story telling but it being stuck in frickin french and via french websites. Over all shit is just unavailable. They actually check ip addresses and ban you for doing that on those mono account servers. There are ways around it if you have multiple internet access but most people play by the rules.

I dusted off an old laptop recently and noticed it still had the BYOND client downloaded from when I messed around in SS13 before it went to shit, and decided on a whim to check out the only other game on the listing with a half decent player count, which turned out to be a funny weeaboo SRPG MMO. Pretty fun actually, there's a surprising amount of character building depth, anyone else here by chance check out Sigragona Legends?

Yeah wakfu is a lot dead. I haven't played in a long time so I can't really tell though. In Dofus, you have to play in the mono account servers and there's a lot of communication. It's been the fall of wakfu, people playing all alone with multiple accounts. It kills the mm part of the mmo.

Dofus gets more support, and has had pretty much any and all QoL that wakfu had backported.
Wakfu gets updates still, but less often and with less post-release support than dofus. It's got less players, it's just generally not as popular.
A lot of people were permanently put off of wakfu after they nuked the characters after the open beta. I know people who spent 50-60 hours playing the beta that they promised wouldn't be wiped, then it got wiped.

I went and had a look at it again since the first time since Aydiv, I think they pretty much butchered my preferred classes in a recent patch so that's kind of killing any motivation to seriously get into it again
The main 3 boring "human" races are the only viable/OP classes, everything else thats actually unique and interesting kerp getting kneecapped because of fricking Tot and his Iop obsession

Pretty sure Wakfu is dead out of the 2 and Dofus is getting ported to a new engine soon and gets called dofus 3.0? If you want to try out dofus i would wait until the new wakfu tv show season releases that they crowdfunded some years ago as it will boost the population for sure.
The Wakfu show season 1 was godly due to Nox best villain made. Season 2 was meh start and once qilby joins becomes good. Season 3 was garbage because it became the percedal and family show with too much dbz fighting and only half the ep of the usual with netflix involvement. i hope season 4 will least be as good as 2 and be a bit more grounded in terms of fights as it was crowdfunded.
Avoid Wakfu like the plague, just play Dofus. I remember Ganker and /vg/ playing together when the monoaccount server released and it was really fun. Ankama is currently porting Dofus to Unity and they already said that it will be released next year so if you end up liking the game, you can just have something to look forward too.

The crafting got slightly less grindy recently, and everybody has crafting skills. I've seen people offer free crafting now. And since you can install crafting stations in your bag for other people to use with your skills, you're guaranteed not to get scammed if you borrow their station.

The game was extremely soulful in 2012, but they ruined it. You can still play it today and have fun with it, but expect to quit at some point due to some bullshit.

To be fair I tried the multi-character thing for a while (me and my gf played 3 characters each to form a full 6 man party) and it was a fun, strategic co-op experience, but that's just not an MMO anymore.
Coding aside what they really wasted their time on was remaking all of the character, enemies, and background sprites from scratch.
Personally I lost interest after the server wipe in the first beta.
Imagine if they had added onto the existing systems instead of being obsessed with remakes. We could've had an insane clusterfrick of content.
I'm also pretty sure they lost parts of the code at some point. Some additions seemed poorly hacked in when I last played.

I might have seen you in beta. I was Anonymous in the beta and guild leader of the second largest guild. I miss Wakfu in beta so much. It truly was a better game.
I was also once charmed by this game and its unique faction system where every faction has a type of resource specialty but also its own ecosystem where keeping every types of resources above X amount gave a faction wide buff to everyone.
This made it so that people from the other 3 factions that came to yours for its unique resource and started to loot everything made your faction lose one if its buff which in turned mobilized the faction to protect them either through voted laws, players applying as Guards being rewarded for winning duels in their faction's territory and kicking them out/jailing them. Since a faction could declare war on others, it could effectively lock them out from certain resources and would need to acquire them through proxy resulting in a very unique, breathing economy.
Until you realize that everyone is multi-boxing. I've seen some absolutely disgusting shit and the devs don't give two fricks about it as long as they get more money from people using multiple accounts. I once defeated an enemy from an enemy nation only to get arrested by his alts that are Guards from my own faction taunting me.
I've seen people making level 1 characters accompany their mains as they go on a looting spree in a faction, destroying their ecosystem. As soon as someone approach, they challenge that player to a duel with a level 1 and then just do nothing with the alt. There's a time limit of 30 secs for each player's rounds in battle, giving them a minimum of 40 seconds to loot everything unhindered while you're stuck in the battle and then put some distance between you and him so he can keep you locked in battle.
Multiboxing and disconnected, uncaring devs ruined a great idea of a game.

As an aside, which class should I pick? I know this game is very ranged-base so not a lot of option for the melee characters I tend to prefer.
A good solo "range" class would be an Osamoda.
Can either go support or full on damage with many pets to help you. You can also set your pets on fire for big numbers at the start of their turn (Having a pandawa to position enemies around your pet is a huge plus)
Not him but the late game dungeons pretty much turn into puzzles where mistakes are rewarded with insta-death and where you need top tier gear (very expensive or very tedious to get) lots of grinding to get permanent stat boosts, and very often mandatory classes like sacrier/panda for their positioning abilities and enutrof/xelor for their disabling abilities, not to mention the healers, it wouldn't be much of a problem if every servers weren't infested with bots taking every ressources like a locust swarm.
It's fun but only if you have a large group of friends or guild with diverse classes covering all 4 elements for partying up, however keep in mind that all of the game is balanced around PvP players who constantly whine in the forums to have their favorite class/gear buffed or classes they don't like nerfed.
This made me drop Dofus. Frigost was a nightmare when it came to this. Every dungeon boss there is invulnerable unless you do X or Y thing to make them vulnerable for a couple of turns. Also every battle could take a solid half an hour with how much of a slugfest they are, more than an hour if it's a boss. When I used to play everyone wanted to go grind levels there and things get boring fast when you have to wait like 10 minutes for your turn to come so you can do 100 or 200 damage then wait another 10 minutes so it can be your turn again.
Oh yeah I didn't mention how fricking long some boss battles can get even early in the game, and that's when you don't do the stupid challenges for extra exp and drop rate.
Some dungeons are very unforgiving for melee characters but the devs wisened up and designed the content better. Melee classes are competetive in most cases and even optimal sometimes.
Also, you don't play a solo class. You build a team of 3 heroes that you play at the same time. So you can tinker and create some fun synergies.

When did they do that? Last time I played you only had access to one character at a time that could summon a single 'helper' NPC.
They expanded that feature to tie it to subscriptions, and to keep the game playable with the shrinking playerbase. Now you can either get a subscription that lets you play 3 characters at once or you buy a range of other special helper NPCs that aren't as powerful as player characters.

This one is because Season 3 and 4 were meant to be the same thing but Netflix's moronic rules meant they had to cut short
A lot of the animation was repeating (Tristepin doing his kamen rider transformation), or swiped straight up from previous seasons, and they kept dumbing down the models compared to the previous seasons too. It also has a dumb plot, half the episodes, and ends in a cliffhanger.
Basically it was half the length, and barely half the quality compared to previous seasons. The dumbing down of the models is the worst, what set apart season 1 the most to me was because it was the first show that used tweening to make it look better instead of cheaper, and they keep dumbing that shit down so they can do "real animation" despite not having the budget for it.
For all the issues that season 2 has, it has my favorite character designs

Because you tried to play a group game as a solo player. Dungeons are very easy for 3+ parties.
That's not true anymore. They took the additional hardmode dungeon mechanics and put them into the regular difficulty mode as well. If you enter any dungeon above lvl 100 blind and at the appropriate level you will get shit on by the boss.

The low level dungeons are also a mixed bag now. Picky and sheep dungeon (forgot their name) was doable, but shit like the Royal Tofu boss gets a huge damage buff if any party member uses Wakfu Points, turning him into an unstoppable noob killer.

Wakfu is so bad, there's no content and what they have is so repetitive. It's a wonder they're still not bankrupt.
It's fairly grindy and difficulty is kinda all over the place. Last time I've played it with someone Astrub (newbie location) dungeons were harder than dungeons in nations. It was extremely jarring to struggle for basic set of serviceable gear and then mop the floor with the next few tiers of dungeons. Also at levels 90+ all dungeons start to have "BOSS IS INVULNERABLE UNTIL CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE MET" gimmick and it gets really fricking tiresome to clear them.

Again Yugo's split personality BS was to make his race playable and honestly a snore. The best part of the World of Twelve was the fact that divinity was based not on power but worshipers. These divinities could have conflicts with those who did not convert, but went more on a Yugo story focus then using Yugo as a focal point to see these conflicts.

There is a whole ass comic that is about how the Brotherhood of the Forgotten was established walking around finding forgotten Demi-gods. It is ass it has no context. The sacrier in the final episodes has a whole ass personality and none of it was given. I dont think they even voiced her. There is a LOT of context lost season 3 due to it being in other media. Season 3 is the weakest for that for sure.
The laws of divinity arent very clear sure. Old Goultard is more interesting, but the clear plot device is he had the Iop God powers and might of never knew it til Wakfu-ish times. Dark Vlad is meant to be this sickening monster who does whatever he wishes and in season 3 they made him into a clown. The old Dofus Goultard and Wakfu Goultard seem almost too different
Don't forget how they killed off phaeris and started this whole Yugo Amalia shit in the manga and they expected viewers to have read it before watching the OVAs.

They actually check ip addresses and ban you for doing that on those mono account servers. There are ways around it if you have multiple internet access but most people play by the rules.

Yeah wakfu is a lot dead. I haven't played in a long time so I can't really tell though. In Dofus, you have to play in the mono account servers and there's a lot of communication. It's been the fall of wakfu, people playing all alone with multiple accounts. It kills the mm part of the mmo.

Dofus gets more support, and has had pretty much any and all QoL that wakfu had backported.
Wakfu gets updates still, but less often and with less post-release support than dofus. It's got less players, it's just generally not as popular.
A lot of people were permanently put off of wakfu after they nuked the characters after the open beta. I know people who spent 50-60 hours playing the beta that they promised wouldn't be wiped, then it got wiped.

The main 3 boring "human" races are the only viable/OP classes, everything else thats actually unique and interesting kerp getting kneecapped because of fricking Tot and his Iop obsession

Pretty sure Wakfu is dead out of the 2 and Dofus is getting ported to a new engine soon and gets called dofus 3.0? If you want to try out dofus i would wait until the new wakfu tv show season releases that they crowdfunded some years ago as it will boost the population for sure.
The Wakfu show season 1 was godly due to Nox best villain made. Season 2 was meh start and once qilby joins becomes good. Season 3 was garbage because it became the percedal and family show with too much dbz fighting and only half the ep of the usual with netflix involvement. i hope season 4 will least be as good as 2 and be a bit more grounded in terms of fights as it was crowdfunded.

Avoid Wakfu like the plague, just play Dofus. I remember Ganker and /vg/ playing together when the monoaccount server released and it was really fun. Ankama is currently porting Dofus to Unity and they already said that it will be released next year so if you end up liking the game, you can just have something to look forward too.
