This is what defines what is or is not epic. Epic implies a grand sense of scale. Big, cool bosses and big cool effects, big cool events, with high stakes. WoW is not epic. The bosses look like utter trash; beating on a 25% upscaled trash mob for ten minutes is not epic. The effects look small and pathetic. The scale seems minuscule. The Vanessa Van Cleef fight from Cataclysm was more epic than anything they've put out recently, with the whole hallucination phase and the swinging from the exploding ship part.

The idea of faction-based game-modes and cross-faction play don't have to be mutually exclusive. Battlegrounds and WPVP objectives could be explained away as helping out rogue generals and shit. I never even bothered to wait for Vault of the Incarnates to come out. You might be right that the gameplay is the best its been in ages, but the soul of the game is dead. Warcraft used to be about orcs and humans ripping each others guts out. Now its about helping dragons find their gender identity.
Minor addendum: The Tuskarr were based. I had no issues with them. The centaur however, to put it lightly, were one of the least likable NPC races I have ever come across in any video game.

You can have something that is "mechanically fun", but no one is going to care if the game actively tries to make (you) and everything around you irrelevant to a point the world and characters around you are as deep as a puddle, and all you do is chase big number without anything to have you feel connected to your character beyond what's in your collection.
I can understand why Ion wanted to take the DFO and Lost Ark approach where you just do dailies, your raids and weeklies on your roster of characters, feed the good shit to your main and that's it, but that only really works in Korea and China. I don't really know any game with a huge western audience that encourages that sort of daily grind when WoW's competitors all have some sort of social feature suite to make people actually wanting to hang out ingame, which Blizzard decimated in Shadowlands, especially if you want to RP and now have to waddle around the fact everyone's idea for an afterlife is a lie.

Here's my "well I guess I'll just go play something else." moment for every expansion-
Cataclysm: amalgamating 10 and 25 man into a "single" difficulty/progression track at the start of the expansion. So I had to become a raid leader since only about 15 of my guilds 25 man team came back from the long wait.
MoP - Pandas. I tried to keep an open mind but going from fighting doomsday cults and demons and old gods, to fighting beer elementals. Yeah no.
WoD - the entire premise of the expansion wherein they cursed the game with abominable writing just to make it tie in better with the shitty movie.
Legion: Endless, exhausting gear treadmill that forced you to do literally everything just to stay up-to-date.
BFA - showed up late and was actually having fun until the whole "Aszhara was a good girl she dindu nuffin it was the evil big penis(male) old gods that manipulated her" retcon.
Shadowlands - I actually started this one at the beginning, and it was great. There was actually a logical end-point in gear progression in sight. But then heroic sire was just out of reach for some of my guildmates. I managed to pug it, but that's right around when they added the fricking M+ gear upgrading which brought back that whole problem that started in Legion. "Lol you have to do what we tell you to do otherwise you'll fall behind in gear." and of course by now I'm too old. I don't have the time and emotional energy to go and put together a M+ group and pugging M+ is a fricking nightmare. And I just wanted to fricking Raid. But I fell way behind the gear curve despite having a phenomenal parse per ilevel that doesn't matter. Because the guy who is just as good as me but has the M+ gear gets into the Heroic Raid spot before I do.

If Blizzard could dislodge their collective heads out of their asses, they'd realize that WoW is more or less dead no matter what they do.
No expansion, no matter how solidly designed and presented (even if they took out all the wokeshit and advertised LE MANLY MEN IN POWER ARMOUR) to get the "Warcraft feel" back, would actually be successful compared to even Legion-era WoW.
It's obvious where the future of WoW lies, and that is in private servers and a growing cult fanbase (Nostalrius, Classic Hardcore, Ascension, Turtle-WoW, Project Epoch etc.) amidst the ashes of the huge old one. Now, obviously, Blizzard hates private servers. But if they could set their ego aside, they could profit quite well off tapping into the creative juices flowing in this movement.
The way they do this is by retrofitting the WoW development team and putting it to work on developing and releasing a public World Editor for World of Warcraft, much in the same vein as they did for Warcraft 3, 20+ years ago. Then, it is simply a matter of putting it in the hands of the cult fanbase while selling official private servers on their own server hosting infrastructure. The most popular "private" servers developed by these fans would be advertised as they usually are, but would be seen in the official WoW server list, among all the other ones. Toss in a 5% cut to the devs of these servers through subscriptions of players actively playing on their servers, and you'd fund these private server teams better than any donations currently could, and thus you'd see much more regular support and more ambition from them, too. On Blizzard's side, they'd get the boost of no longer needing to pour millions of dollars into developing increasingly costly expansions and could generate passive income from subscriptions through continually generated interest in new and lasting private servers.
Then if they wanted to israelite it up even more, just sell World Editor assets for use on these servers. Even more profit.
This requires them to actually give the players freedom in how they play the game and not forcing players to suck the girldick for the next battle pass. I really like your idea Anon but we all know these companies are filled with genuine moronic parasites only looking to suck these IPs dry and move on instead of actually respecting the game.
I've said this for YEARS, what's the biggest flaw often brought up about MMOs? The barrier to entry in developing them, specifically? CONTENT. You end up finding you can't make content fast enough, and it becomes very costly to maintain. So? The answer has been sitting in the faces of MMO devs for ages at this point. Develop a custom toolkit, ala the world editor from W3, or release an API not unlike the Steam Workshop or Nexus ffs, where players can create and share content that either gets added officially server-side, or hosted on user-based private servers, not unlike fricking GMOD servers.
But the anti-freedom nature of the neoliberal corporate restraints and the woke politics BOTH consider this anathema.
This is why people have developed such a scorn for MMOs. If these pussies were really interested and motivated by PROFIT they'd break the bank for a fraction of the cost to make the damn game. Frick blizzard and frick this backwards and sloppy dev mindset.
If Broadsword online had the balls, they'd take that idea and apply it to SWTOR since it's ahead of the game by having the reputation of being a space barbie simulator, but those frickers are probably just as nutless as blizz.

Everyone talks about “systems”, a le hecking epic manly story, better content for casuals, and a million other things wow could do better, and while improving those aspects would increase player numbers, there’s a fundamental truth that will keep WoW down and not a culturally relevant game.
The game is old. It’s old as frick. At the end of the day, the gameplay, no matter how many new spells, specs, classes, talents, graphical changes or animation “upgrades” is the same for the thousands of hours you play it. The fundamentally only thing you do in WoW is target a mob and kill them, and boring auxiliary bullshit to make killing said mob faster. They have solely focused for over 15 years.
The game needs to just die and they make WoW 2. Maybe carry over mounts and titles, but start completely fresh, bring in new people, be ambitious and try and create a juggernaut of a game with the already existing popular Warcraft IP.

MMORPGs mean a lot of things to a lot of different people, but if we are to categorize based on the criteria of "what experience came first defines the genre", then MMORPGs are about exploring and interacting with a world. Instanced dungeons, raids (which are just instanced dungeons), instanced PvP like Arenas, etc; detract from that experience.
MMORPGs today are lobby games at best, built on a framework that isn't meant to be dissected into queues for what are ultimately minigames.
It's reached its logical end of being nothing but a weekly lootbox farm.
The addicts who still play exist in a state of trauma from past expansions, they will actively beg blizzard to *not* make any content at all, rather than take the risk of bad content again. Blizzard ofc are happy to agree, less work on their part.
