True, it made Half-Life even better where as HL2 made it worse.
HL2 is trash, only good thing were the physics. Back in the day it was amazing.
I'd say it's about as good. It has better pacing and less shitty chapters if I remember correctly but less memorable moments and feels a bit more generic because of your point of view on the setting and the events.
HL2 as a whole is far from trash, there's a reason there was/is so much hype for HL3 and Alyx was a success while being only VR.

Most Half-Life 2 fans had probably not even played Half-Life 1. I know that when I played Half-Life 2 after playing HL1 i only groaned and got annoyed when I got a crowbar and had NPCs fellate me like im the second coming of christ. It's only there as a callback for people who know half-life because its influential or those who are manchildren. Most people will say Half-life 2 is good simply because it was popular and innovative but the physics were not impressive to those had had played Psi-Ops or Max Payne 2. The facial animations are impressive but vampire the Masquerade came out that same day and blows half-life out the water. The gameplay is also a considerate downgrade from Half-Life 1, only impressive to the lay-man who hardly plays video games
