and xerneas and yveltal aren't really designed in a way that they can just copy zygarde's gimmick the way that dialga and palkia could for giratina

It's pretty much between the Super Ancient Pokémon and these three. The others have way more checks to consider.

Here's a crazy idea: a Zygarde Core buddies up with your player character and acts as a companion for the main story, like the Rotom Pokedex from SM/USUM or Calyrex in the SWSH Crown Tundra.
Imagine Xerneas or Yveltal, but merged with some of Zygarde Cells. But of course that won't happen. We won't even going to meet Xerneas or Yveltal because you morons said the game is going to set in the past, where both pokemon is having their thousand-year beauty sleep, amirite?
