I have not played a single pokemon game between emerald and sun/moon (which I dropped after a few hours), why are they the best?
they aren't, they're just ok. they're in between the peak of pokemon (gen 4) and the downfall (gen 6) so they're in a weird spot. they're worth giving a go if you haven't already played them, but they are an objective downgrade from hgss.
however, zoomers like to spread the idea that gen 5 is the "le underrated gem" of pokemon just because they grew up with it instead of gen 1-4. it's not, but they're certainly not bad games. they're basically gen 7 but in sprite form, so use that as a basic judgement.

Gen III and Gen IV sucked you stupid fricking zoomer. Gen V revitalized it and the move to 3D killed it again. Legends Arceus was a much needed step in the right direction.

Think of everything good you want a Pokemon game to be and it felt like GameFreak really poured all their creative energy into trying to do it to the highest imaginable standard.

I can't speak on SwSh, but 6 and 7 are a-lot less tedious than the old games to me.
Johto in particular is awful when it comes to post-game grinding or making a proper team for the Battle Frontier stuff.
Pokemon X made me drop the series by being unforgivably bad but I can agree that it isn't tedious because it just gives you free high-level Pokemon, free mega-evolution Pokemon, a toggle for EXP ALL and zero postgame.
The game was a piss-easy breeze if nothing else.

I still enjoy GSC because the stat system was simpler. The big issue with content like Battle Frontier is that they expect you to use top level teams without telling you how anything works (ESPECIALLY the Battle Palace). It wasn't until XY that they finally made all the metagame bullshit visually transparent and easy to comprehend.

Yes it is comfy, kanto is boring, yes it has content (that no one really cares). But I still find bw to be better and more fun. (I started with blue in 98)

Some of them are surprisingly good. I played pokemon unbound (firered romhack) not too long ago and it was a fun time. Would recommend.
