They released FF15 in 2016, meaning they missed the "all the cool kids wear black"-trend by about 10 years. Square hasn't been a trendsetter in decades.

If I had to guess it's because the design of games from IV - XV changed so much and the design got REAL schizophrenic once Hashimoto started producing on VIII. The VII+ X games were released at just the right time to capture that magical 1x-30 market and it's mostly made up of the ugh 30 side and beyond.
FF's development history's actually kinda funny if you follow it after 2001 when the gooch left, you'll see why this shit happens: follow the directors, producers & writers for each game.
We went from trannies claiming that Yoshi-P is a godlike producer/director who takes the least amount of time to make a video game in the industry to "w-well, at l-least it's 4 years less than a trainwreck that was FFXV". The backpedaling, it's too intense.
